There are many variations of the a-frame shelter. Choose the best method that suits your situation.
Step 1: use two long limbs, similar in size and strength. These will be your main support beams. They must have the strength to support the structure, strong enough to hold the weight of the roofing. Lean the two branches together, angle them so that the top 5 or 6 inches of each limb crosses the other one. Pound the ends of the limbs into the ground and lash them together where they meet at the top.
Step 2: Next use an 8 to 10 foot long, strong limb, approximately 3 to 4 inches thick and as straight as possible. Rest one end in the bracket created by the A-frame and rest the other end on the ground. If you plan on making another set of support beams rather than have the shelter curved towards the ground, repeat step one and lash the 8 to 10 foot long limb to both brackets, one a-frame on each end of the limb.
Place a support stick at the front of the structure and lash it to the main support “V” shaped beams. This will help support much of the load that will be placed at the front of the structure and keep the shelter from falling forward.
Step 3: Now begin leaning 2 to 3 inch diameter limbs against the main top support at an angle that mimics the angle of your original A-frame. Going an extra step you can also tie wood beams across this wood section, to create a sort of checkerboard of cross weaved wood beams and branches. When finished, you should have a triangular shaped cocoon with an “A” shaped opening at the front.
Step 4: Finish by gathering branches and limbs that are covered with pine needles or leaves and lay those on top of your shelter. Like the shingles on a roof, start at the bottom and thatch them like shingles to the peak.
Layer the branches and leaves as thick as you can and when this is finished gather debris and covered the shelter with the debris. All Will add additional insulation and protection from the elements.
