UN Officials Hint at New Tech to Track Gun Ownership and It’s Already in Use in the U.S.

Imagine every street camera quietly scanning for firearms, every drone ready to respond, and hidden portals logging who’s carrying what – without you ever stepping through a metal detector.

That’s the picture Ian Brown of the National Association for Gun Rights (NAGR) paints in their recent video warning about a new wave of surveillance tools he says are already creeping into American life. 

His central claim is not that these systems are coming someday, but that many of them are here, deployed, and poised to scale – and that UN officials are openly discussing how to use similar devices abroad.

Brown’s tone is urgent. Mine is too. Even if you’re tech-optimistic or supportive of targeted security, it’s hard to ignore how quickly these tools have matured – and how little public debate has caught up.

AI Cameras, Everywhere, All At Once

Brown starts with a “what if” that doesn’t sound so hypothetical anymore: AI-assisted video networks that can recognize firearms in real time.

He points to ZeroEyes, a U.S. company that offers software to detect visible guns across existing camera feeds. The appeal, as Brown describes it, is scale.

You don’t need to install new hardware – just plug AI into the cameras you already have, and suddenly a school district, a transit hub, or a city block can be monitored for brandished weapons.

Right now, Brown says, these systems are trained to flag guns that are already out and visible. That means concealed carriers aren’t supposed to be swept up – at least not by this generation of detection. But he stresses that “as far as we know” caveat, and hints at a separate class of tools aimed at detecting concealed weapons, which he returns to later.

Crucially, Brown notes that the detection step is followed by human verification and then a police notification. That human-in-the-loop is a guardrail, but it’s not the end of the automation story. 

He cites ZeroEyes’ collaboration with Alon Robotics to pair gun-detection alerts with security drones capable of responding to perceived threats. He says that specific combo hasn’t been used in a real deployment yet, but he flags that major departments in Denver, Portland, and Los Angeles have piloted drones for public-safety uses in the past year.

I’ll add this: whenever you fuse detection, dispatch, and a rapid physical response – drones, robots, or otherwise – you introduce new risks of error, escalation, and misidentification. 

Those risks demand clear rules, rigorous testing, independent audits, and transparent after-action reviews. Otherwise, “false positive” becomes less of a nuisance and more of a civil-liberties problem.

Hidden Portals And “Drive-By” Scans

Even if an AI camera only flags brandished guns, Brown argues that the concealed future is already here.

He points to a moment at the United Nations’ small arms discussions when, according to Brown, Ghana’s representative referenced a “weapons detection device” being used to find firearms – including what he called “assault weapons.” Brown says the device wasn’t made in Ghana at all, but by a U.S. firm: SoundThinking’s SafePointe.

In Brown’s telling, SafePointe blends AI with sensor “portals” disguised as everyday fixtures – think sleek entry lanes rather than archway detectors – capable of inferring the presence, type, number, and location of weapons on a person.

He emphasizes the discretion of the setup: the goal, he says, is to search without drawing attention to the fact that a search is happening.

According to Brown, even when these devices are purchased by private operators – hotels, casinos, event venues – data from detections is routed to local police. That, in his view, effectively turns private portals into public eyes.

Here’s where I add a big asterisk. Whether data is shared by default, under contract, or only when a threat threshold is crossed matters a lot. 

Brown says it’s routed to law enforcement; if so, there should be clear public policies, retention limits, and disclosure to the people being scanned. If not, companies and agencies should state that plainly. Silent, ubiquitous screening is the kind of thing that erodes trust fast.

Brown relays one more claim from the Ghana discussion that should make everyone sit up: an ambition to extend detection range so authorities could “search a house” just by driving past in an unmarked van. 

Whether that’s technically feasible today or still speculative, it’s the kind of use case that smashes into the Fourth Amendment. Brown asks whether the U.S. government would deploy such a capability without warrants. His answer is obvious. Mine is simpler: constitutional lines don’t bend because a sensor gets clever.

Face Recognition: The Other Quiet Backbone

Brown then shifts to another piece of the stack: AI facial recognition.

He says the federal government, and specifically the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), uses face-matching tools that can track individuals across images on the open web. He cites a Government Accountability Office accounting of which agencies rely on this technology as a sign of how mainstream it has become.

His point isn’t that face recognition is uniquely anti-gun. It’s that, as a cross-cutting surveillance capability, it can be paired with weapon detection and other databases to create a comprehensive tracking regime. 

Give the system one photo, Brown says, and it can spider out across social media, public images, and associated data, stitching together a profile.

As someone who watches tech policy, I’ll underline this: face recognition always expands far beyond its initial pitch. “Just for the worst crimes” becomes “also for probation checks,” becomes “also to pre-screen permits,” becomes “why not to flag anyone we already have on a list?” 

Guardrails have to be hard-coded, supervised, and enforceable with consequences. If they’re not, they’re not guardrails – they’re aspirations.

Brown anchors all of this in a legislative warning. He calls out the GOSAFE Act – championed by Senators Mark Kelly and Chuck Schumer – as “not your average assault-weapons ban,” alleging it would sweep up “nearly every semi-automatic firearm in America.”

He’s urging gun owners to mobilize, sign petitions, and pressure the Senate to block it. Whether you share his assessment of the bill’s scope or not, his political point is clear: surveillance and prohibition tend to move together. 

If Washington can’t pass a broad ban outright, a robust surveillance baseline can achieve similar effects through policy pressure points – permits, insurance, sensitive-locations enforcement, and soft coercion from public and private venues.

My take: laws deserve tight, technical drafting with clear boundaries and judicially reviewable definitions. “Semi-automatic” is not a vibe; it’s a mechanism. If Congress is going to legislate, it should do it precisely – and with transparency about downstream enforcement tools.

Brown highlights a recent push in Colorado, where he says a pro-2A legislator, Ken DeGraaf, forced a vote to add civil-liberties protections against AI surveillance creep. 

The effort failed, which he reads as a bellwether: where lawmakers are already comfortable with tight gun restrictions, they’ll be comfortable with tight surveillance too.

He goes further, taking a jab at the proliferation of data centers, likening them to a “dystopian fungus” that will “sap our rights” along with power and water. Hyperbole aside, the underlying point isn’t wild: storage and compute capacity lower the marginal cost of keeping everything, forever.

With storage cheap and analytics powerful, collection defaults tend to flip from “only what we need” to “grab it all and we’ll decide later.”

That’s not a technology problem. It’s a governance one. And it’s solvable—if we write the rules before habits calcify.

The Hard Question: Can This Tech Ever Be “Good”?

To his credit, Brown doesn’t reject the tools outright. He says plainly he has “no issue with the technology itself” and is open to its use to mitigate crime or protect schools. 

He also suggests an alternative policy mix – ending gun-free zones and allowing trained school staff to carry firearms – that many gun-rights advocates support.

Where he draws the line is trust. Based on how agencies have used emergency powers and surveillance authorities over the past two decades, Brown sees no reason to assume restraint now. 

Without explicit limits, audits, public notice, and due process protections, he argues, these systems will drift toward abuse – and the people most likely to feel it first will be lawful gun owners in blue jurisdictions.

I’d frame it this way: if a city wants AI gun detection at schools, say so publicly. Publish the vendor contract, the model’s accuracy and bias metrics, the retention policy, the human-in-the-loop steps, the false-positive appeal process, and the conditions for police response. 

Ban secondary uses (like building watchlists of carriers). No covert rollouts. No silent feature creep. And bake in a sunset unless the public renews it with evidence that it works.

Brown’s video is a shot across the bow. It’s a reminder that the next gun-control frontier may be less about lists of banned features and more about webs of quiet detection, identification, and response.

He’s asking gun owners to notice the scaffolding going up around them – AI cameras, detection portals, face recognition, drones – and to fight legislative battles while pushing for hard constraints on surveillance tech.

You don’t have to share every one of his priors to see the stakes. The same tools that can cue police to an imminent threat can also chill lawful carry, generate false alarms, and normalize a “scan-first, ask-later” culture in public spaces.

If policymakers want buy-in, they need to meet the public where it is: with candor, with narrow tailoring, and with enforceable limits that protect both safety and civil rights. And if they won’t, they shouldn’t be surprised when the people being scanned push back – loudly.

For now, Brown’s bottom line is simple and forceful: pay attention, get involved, and guard your liberty before the infrastructure of control becomes the status quo.
