The Myth of Complicated Rituals

For years, shooters have been told to follow complex break-in procedures: fire one shot, clean, fire two shots, clean again, then three, and so on until you’ve put 200 rounds downrange. Not only is this tedious, but it eats up expensive ammunition and valuable barrel life. Every round through the bore is one less for competition or hunting. It’s no wonder some shooters suspect that manufacturers themselves promoted these rituals to burn out barrels faster and sell replacements sooner.
Why Break-In Exists in the First Place

The basic idea of break-in is simple. When a new barrel is made, even with precision machining, microscopic peaks and valleys remain inside the rifling. Just like breaking in a car engine or polishing the edge of a knife, those rough edges need to be smoothed out – or “burnished” – by the passage of bullets. Part of it is tradition – if someone spent hours breaking in their first rifle and it shot well afterward, they assume the process was responsible. Another part is psychological investment: after burning through hundreds of rounds in a ritual, few are willing to admit it wasn’t necessary. In reality, the barrel would have likely shot just as well after a much shorter process.
What You Gain From Break-In

The real benefit of barrel break-in isn’t magic accuracy, but stability. Once the throat has smoothed out, velocities will jump slightly, often by 50 to 100 feet per second, and then remain steady for the rest of the barrel’s life. That consistency is what matters, especially for precision shooters who rely on predictable velocity in long-range matches. For hunters or casual shooters, the difference might not even be noticeable.
What Happens If You Skip It?

The short answer: not much. If you don’t bother with break-in, the barrel will eventually burnish itself through normal use. You may just deal with a little extra copper fouling for the first couple of range sessions. Accuracy won’t be ruined, the barrel won’t be ruined, and the rifle will still perform well. At worst, you’ll simply hit that velocity “sweet spot” a little later.
A Practical Approach

So, what’s the best way to handle a new barrel? Keep it simple. For a custom hand-lapped barrel, fire about five rounds, cleaning between each until the copper fouling stops showing up on patches. For a factory barrel, go with 15 to 20 rounds, cleaning a few times in between. Use bullets with a long bearing surface to maximize the burnishing effect, and then stop. From that point on, shoot as you normally would.
Tools to Be Used

To me, the most interesting part of this debate is how much weight shooters give to rituals over results. A clean, straightforward break-in absolutely helps get a barrel to its stable state faster. But beyond that, it’s largely superstition. The best proof of a barrel’s worth is what it puts on paper, not how many patches you ran through it on day one.
