In a sweeping joint operation between federal and city law enforcement, dozens of alleged gun traffickers were arrested and hundreds of firearms were taken off Chicago’s streets. As reported by Chuck Goudie of NBC Chicago, the sting operation was carried out by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) and the Chicago Police Department (CPD) over a two-month period. It resulted in the seizure of 171 guns and 64 machine gun conversion devices, or “switches,” which can turn a handgun into an illegal automatic weapon.

This operation is being hailed as one of the most significant moves yet to curb the rise of automatic gunfire that has turned parts of the city into near-combat zones.

Goudie’s reporting paints a disturbing picture: a battlefield weapon disguised in plain sight. These tiny conversion switches, often 3D printed or purchased online, can transform legal pistols into fully automatic machine guns capable of firing 30 to 50 rounds in mere seconds. According to Jon Maniff, assistant special agent in charge at the ATF’s Chicago division, “You can shoot 30 rounds out of a magazine in less than two seconds using these.”

Goudie showed one example – a gun found on a suspect’s bed, posted proudly on social media. His handle even included the word “switch,” revealing a disturbing trend of flaunting illegal firepower online. According to law enforcement, many of these weapons had already been linked to other crimes, including mass shootings and assaults on police officers.

Maniff told NBC that automatic weapons were once a rarity on city streets – now, they’re “regularly heard citywide.” The number of gunshot wounds per victim has increased, simply because machine guns can fire so rapidly. “They’ve been used in robberies. They’ve been used in homicides. They’ve been used in mass shootings,” Maniff confirmed.

Even more troubling, the operation uncovered that some suspects were teaching others how to install these switches via social media tutorials – further spreading the threat. The implications of this reach beyond one city block or one suspect. It shows that machine gun tech, once limited to war zones, has become disturbingly easy to access and abuse.

While NBC highlighted the arrests, Sabrina Franza of CBS Chicago took us inside the ATF’s Crime Gun Intelligence Center (CGIC) – a high-tech hub where shell casings and firearms are analyzed forensically. As ATF Special Agent-in-Charge Christopher Amon explained, “Every firearm leaves unique markings on the cartridge casing.” These markings help connect a single gun to multiple crimes – even long after the crime scene has been cleaned up.

Thanks to CGIC’s real-time evidence analysis, the ATF and CPD can now connect a gun to past shootings within 24 to 48 hours. This is a game-changer, considering that before CGIC’s creation, that process took six months.

Playground Shooting Highlights Urgency

One of the most chilling examples came from Riis Park on Chicago’s West Side, where a suspect rode a scooter through a playground while firing a handgun into the air, according to CPD Chief of Detectives Antoinette Ursitti, who spoke to Franza. That pistol, a Glock 23 with a switch and extended magazine, had the power to unload 50 rounds in just two seconds.

Ursitti called the event “absolutely terrifying,” especially considering that children and families were present. This wasn’t just another crime scene – it was a stark reminder of how fragile public safety has become when high-capacity automatic weapons fall into the wrong hands.

In her CBS broadcast, Franza reported that of the 64 machine gun conversion devices seized during the mission, each represents a potential mass shooting that didn’t happen. “These 64 devices represent 64 shootings we were able to stop,” Amon emphasized.

Across the room, Franza observed a pile of 171 recovered firearms. Chief Ursitti noted, “These are not in the hands of criminals that are going to hurt anybody without a second thought.” These weren’t just guns – they were crimes waiting to happen.

Targeting Repeat Offenders

The CGIC strategy isn’t just about reacting – it’s about predicting. By linking shell casings, social media activity, and known offender histories, police and prosecutors can identify and charge repeat violent offenders more efficiently.

According to Franza’s report, 50% of the guns found with conversion devices are tied to another shooting. That kind of connection makes it easier for prosecutors to bring stronger charges – and take more dangerous individuals off the streets.

41 Arrests and Counting

Both Franza and Goudie reported that the sting operation led to at least 41 arrests, including two teenage minors. One of the most high-profile arrests was Eddie Arguelles, who not only discharged a firearm in a park but was allegedly using social media to teach others how to install switches.

Arguelles’ case was cracked thanks to evidence gathered at CGIC. Prosecutors have filed federal charges for gun trafficking and state charges ranging from armed violence to carjacking.

According to CPD data shared with CBS Chicago, the number of machine gun conversion devices recovered in the city skyrocketed from 81 in 2020 to 604 in 2024. This tenfold increase shows just how urgent the problem has become – and why operations like this one are so critical.

The numbers are staggering, but the result of the recent crackdown is clear: each recovered gun and device may have prevented another tragedy.

What’s most fascinating and frightening is how quiet this invasion has been. These aren’t tanks rolling down Michigan Avenue. They’re 3D-printed switches, hidden in backpacks or bedrooms, converting handguns into deadly weapons in seconds.

The coordinated work between federal and local agencies, especially at CGIC, proves what can happen when law enforcement stops waiting for a shooting and starts preventing one. The technology now exists not just to track bullets after the fact – but to predict where they’ll fly next.

Proactive Policing Is Paying Off

One thing is clear: this isn’t just another batch of arrests. It’s a shift in how police are fighting gun crime. Instead of waiting for a report, they’re intercepting illegal parts, mapping out crime networks, and closing in fast.

“We are proactive,” Ursitti said firmly. “We are going to do everything we can to make sure that nobody in the city of Chicago has to live in fear.”

It’s a strong statement – and backed by serious results.

A Safer Path Forward?

The ATF and CPD aren’t claiming victory just yet, but they’ve drawn a line in the sand. This isn’t just about stopping crime; it’s about taking control of the narrative. In a city often gripped by headlines of violence, this is one of resistance – and response.

And in a place where a playground can become a warzone, every switch taken off the street means someone gets to live another day in peace.
