A traffic stop over expired tags in Flagler County quickly turned into something much more serious after deputies said they smelled marijuana, searched the vehicle, and later discovered that the suspect had been trying to hide more than officers first realized.
According to a recent Bodycam Legend video, the Jan. 30, 2024 stop began with deputies checking a vehicle’s registration and window tint, but the encounter escalated after officers identified the driver as 36-year-old Michael Underwood and learned about a long criminal history that included dozens of prior charges.
Deputies Say The Stop Began With Tags And Tint
The bodycam footage shows a deputy first checking the vehicle’s tint and telling Underwood that the front window measured too dark under Florida’s legal limit.
Underwood told the deputy he had only recently gotten the vehicle back from the shop and said he was headed to his aunt’s house in the area.
The deputy then asked him to step out and questioned him about whether he had a medical marijuana card, weapons, marijuana, or anything illegal on him. Underwood denied having anything and insisted that he did not smoke marijuana.
The deputy, however, said the vehicle smelled strongly of weed, which became the basis for detaining Underwood and searching both him and the vehicle.
The Pat-Down Immediately Raised Tension
The footage shows Underwood becoming agitated as the pat-down began, especially when officers moved toward the groin area, where deputies said people often hide contraband.

Underwood repeatedly complained that the search felt invasive and argued that he had done nothing wrong, while the deputy tried to explain that the odor of marijuana gave them grounds to search.
The exchange became tense but did not fully spiral, with Underwood saying he understood the deputy was doing his job while still objecting to how the search was being conducted.
This is one of those moments where both sides of the footage are important. A search like that is intrusive, and Underwood’s discomfort is understandable on a human level, but the video also shows why officers kept pressing the issue once he reacted so strongly every time they moved toward the same area.
Officers Search The Vehicle, Then Return To Underwood
Deputies searched the vehicle and found what appeared to be a small piece of marijuana, though the larger discovery did not come from the car.
According to the Bodycam Legend narration, officers noticed that Underwood seemed far more concerned about being searched than he did about the car itself, and that reaction led them to believe he might still be hiding something on his body.
A backup officer later arrived and was told that the first search had not been fully completed because Underwood had resisted whenever deputies checked near his groin.
Once the vehicle search failed to produce much, officers decided to conduct a more thorough search of Underwood, warning him that they understood he was upset but that they still had to check carefully.
A Suspicious Item Is Found Near His Groin
During the second search, an officer felt something near Underwood’s crotch area and asked what it was.
Underwood pushed back, saying the officer was grabbing him improperly, but officers said they could feel something that did not belong there. At one point, they also told him to open his mouth because they thought he might be chewing something.

Moments later, deputies recovered contraband hidden in his groin area, and the video’s host said the drugs later tested positive for Schedule I and Schedule II substances.
The amount recovered during that roadside search was listed at 0.77 grams, and at first, deputies appeared to believe that was the main discovery.
That assumption did not last long.
The Patrol Car Camera Caught What Happened Next
After Underwood was placed in the patrol car, officers asked whether he wanted to speak with a detective, but he declined.
According to the Bodycam Legend video, deputies did not yet realize that Underwood still had additional baggies hidden on him. While seated alone in the back of the patrol car, he allegedly pulled more drugs from his private area and scattered them inside the vehicle.
The problem for him was that the rear camera inside the patrol car was still recording.
The footage, according to the host, captured the attempt to dispose of the additional stash, turning what may already have been a possession case into something more serious because of the alleged evidence tampering.
It is a reminder that patrol cars are rarely private spaces, even when a suspect thinks officers are no longer watching. In modern policing, cameras are often rolling from more angles than people realize, and that detail can make or break a case.
Charges Followed After The Hidden Drugs Were Found

The Bodycam Legend host said Underwood was taken to jail and charged with possession of Schedule I and Schedule II drugs with intent to sell, possession of drug paraphernalia, and tampering with physical evidence.
The tampering charge came after deputies said he pulled additional baggies from his body and scattered them inside the patrol car.
Underwood later posted a $20,500 bond, according to the video, but the case did not mark the end of his legal trouble.
The host said he was rearrested 11 months later in Daytona Beach on similar allegations involving possession of Schedule II drugs, tampering, and paraphernalia.
The stop began with expired tags and a tint check, but the footage shows how quickly a routine roadside encounter can change when officers believe they smell drugs, a suspect resists parts of a search, and a patrol car camera records what happens after everyone thinks the main search is already over.
