Spring was supposed to feel like a slow handoff. A little warmth here, a little rain there, and maybe one last cold snap before the season settled in.

That is not what is happening now.

Meteorologist Ryan Hall, speaking in a new forecast on his YouTube channel Ryan Hall, Y’all, described a weather pattern that looks far more aggressive than what most people expect this time of year. Instead of a gentle early-spring setup, Hall warned that a historic heat dome, dangerous fire weather, a severe storm threat in the Ohio Valley, late-season snow in New England, and even a possible geomagnetic storm are all colliding in a matter of days.

In other words, the season has not just changed. It has lurched.

What makes this forecast so striking is not just the number of things happening at once, but how out of place some of them seem for late March. Hall made clear that this is not normal spring warmth and not just another breezy weekend. In his telling, large parts of the country are stepping into a pattern that feels more like late April, May, or even midsummer in a few spots.

That is the part that stands out most. Spring weather is often chaotic, but this setup sounds unusually loud, fast, and extreme.

A Heat Dome That Is Acting More Like Summer

Ryan Hall said the biggest story remains the massive heat dome expanding across the western and central United States, and he did not mince words about how unusual it is.

He described the event as truly historic, pushing back on critics who thought that language was too strong. In Hall’s view, the numbers justify it. He pointed to record-shattering warmth already seen in the Southwest and said the heat would continue spreading east through the weekend, putting large sections of the country 20 to 40 degrees above average.

That is not a small departure from normal.

According to Hall’s forecast, cities across the southern Plains and central U.S. are expected to surge into temperatures more typical of late spring or summer than the third week of March. He highlighted forecast highs around 92 in Oklahoma City, 92 in Dallas, and 97 in Amarillo, while even places farther north such as North Platte and Omaha were expected to flirt with 90 degrees.

He also noted that Chicago and Minneapolis could end up in the 70s, while Denver may jump into the low 80s and Salt Lake City could approach 80.

That kind of temperature spread matters because it shows how broad this ridge really is. This is not just a desert heat story. It is a multi-region event with effects stretching from the Southwest into the Plains, the Rockies, parts of the Midwest, and much of the South.

Hall explained that the driving force is a highly anomalous upper-level ridge trapping hot, dry air over the interior of the country. That setup, he said, is not just allowing temperatures to climb. It is holding them there.

He also warned that overnight lows will not provide much relief in some areas, which raises the risk of heat stress, especially for anyone without reliable air conditioning.

That is an unsettling sentence to read in March.

Normally, people still think of this time of year as transitional, maybe even forgiving. But Hall’s outlook suggests some communities may need to treat this weekend more like a summer heat event, with all the usual precautions that go with it. Hydration, shade, and limiting outdoor strain suddenly matter a lot more than the calendar would suggest.

Fire Danger Builds Across The Plains

As Hall explained it, the heat is only half the problem.

The same pattern baking the Plains and interior West is also helping create dangerous fire weather, especially across southeastern Wyoming, western Nebraska, and southwestern South Dakota. He said the Storm Prediction Center had outlined a critical fire weather risk for Saturday in those areas because the ingredients are lining up in a bad way.

The land is dry. The vegetation is parched. The wind is strengthening.

Hall stressed that a tightening pressure gradient as a surface low develops and a cold front approaches will create exactly the kind of gusty setup that can turn a spark into a fast-moving wildfire. He warned of downslope winds of 20 to 30 miles per hour, with gusts reaching 40, combined with relative humidity under 10 percent.

That combination is brutal.

When air is that dry and winds are that strong, a fire does not wait politely for a response. It runs. Hall said plainly that if something starts under those conditions, it can spread faster than crews can contain it.

He urged people to avoid outdoor burning or anything else that might create a spark. That sounds simple, but it is the sort of advice that becomes urgent when a forecast crosses from uncomfortable into dangerous.

This is one of the more fascinating things about severe weather patterns in the spring. People tend to think of danger in obvious terms like tornadoes or flooding, but extreme heat arriving early can quietly build a completely different disaster. A dry, wind-driven fire setup in March has a way of catching people off guard because it still feels too early for that kind of threat.

Hall’s warning suggests it is not too early at all.

The Ohio Valley Braces For Sunday Storms

After the fire threat, Hall said attention will shift eastward on Sunday, where a severe weather threat is expected to take shape across the Ohio Valley.

He pointed to a Level 2 out of 5 slight risk from the Storm Prediction Center affecting more than 10 million people, including Indianapolis, Cincinnati, and Columbus. Hall described the system as “summeresque,” saying it carries ingredients not often seen together in March.

That alone should get people’s attention.

He said the setup includes a mid-level shortwave and a cold front moving into a warm, increasingly unstable air mass. While he noted there will not be an enormous amount of thunderstorm fuel compared with the biggest spring outbreaks, he still said there should be more than enough to support severe storms.

In Hall’s forecast, convective available potential energy could reach around 1,800 joules per kilogram, and that would combine with 50 knots of wind shear and steep mid-level lapse rates. Those are the kinds of numbers meteorologists watch closely because they suggest the atmosphere is not just unstable, but organized.

Hall said he does not expect this to become a huge tornado day, but he made it clear that many people in the region are likely to deal with strong thunderstorms. Early in the event, storms may form as discrete supercells capable of producing large hail, damaging hail, and possibly a couple of tornadoes.

Later on, he said, those storms are expected to merge into a squall line pushing east-northeast toward places such as Pennsylvania, eastern Kentucky, and West Virginia. Once that happens, Hall warned the main threat may shift toward damaging straight-line winds, the kind that can bring down trees and knock out power.

That is an important distinction because people often hear “not a big tornado day” and mentally relax. But a widespread wind event can still be serious, especially if it arrives after dark or catches people unprepared.

Hall urged residents in the risk zone to use the calmer weather beforehand to secure loose outdoor items and make sure they have a way to receive warnings. That is classic severe weather advice, but it becomes more meaningful when it comes from someone who sounds genuinely locked in on the setup.

And Hall did sound locked in.

Winter Refuses To Leave New England

While the Ohio Valley deals with storms, Hall said the northern side of the same system will drag winter weather back into parts of the Northeast and New England.

He expects the surface low to track along the New York-Pennsylvania border, pulling colder air down from Canada on the backside. That should create a messy rain-to-snow transition in some lower elevations, especially in parts of Maine from Sunday night into Monday morning.

Farther north, Hall said areas of upstate New York, northern Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine are more likely to see mostly snow.

The higher elevations are where he sees the most notable impacts. Hall said the Adirondacks, Green Mountains, and White Mountains appear to be in the bullseye for 6 to 10 inches of heavy, wet snow by Monday afternoon. He also mentioned the possibility of several inches in places such as Augusta, Auburn, and Plattsburgh.

For lower-elevation urban areas such as New York City and Boston, Hall expects mostly cold rain.

This is another reason the forecast feels so strange. One part of the country is staring at summerlike heat, another is preparing for severe storms, and another still may be digging out from late-season mountain snow. That kind of contrast is one of the signatures of spring, but Hall’s version of it seems turned all the way up.

He cautioned that people traveling through northern New England passes Monday morning should leave early and carry winter gear, even though the broader winter storm severity picture may stay mostly in the minimal-to-minor range for many communities.

More Turbulence Ahead, And Even The Sky May Join In

Hall did not stop with the weekend.

Looking ahead to Tuesday, he said an active northern jet stream is expected to send a potent cyclone into the Pacific Northwest, bringing more rain and a burst of heavy snow for the Olympic Mountains and Washington Cascades as colder air pushes in behind the front. He said lower elevations are not likely to see a major snow event, but mountain travel could quickly turn wintry again, especially over passes such as Stevens and Snoqualmie.

That is the kind of forecast twist that can frustrate people this time of year. A few mild days can trick drivers into thinking winter is done, and then the mountains remind everyone that it is still hanging around.

Hall also looked farther ahead into the closing days of the month, saying the huge western heat dome is expected to deamplify and flatten out. But instead of disappearing, that warmth may spread eastward. He suggested the Plains, the South, the Ohio Valley, and the Mid-Atlantic could all continue trending warmer, while the Northeast stays stuck in a cooler, stormier pattern.

That split pattern could keep the country feeling divided between early summer and reluctant winter.

Then there is the sky.

Hall said a coronal mass ejection that left the sun on March 18 is expected to interact with Earth this weekend, and the Space Weather Prediction Center believes it could trigger a G3 strong geomagnetic storm Saturday night into Sunday morning. If skies are clear, Hall said the northern lights could be pushed farther south than usual, offering viewers across the northern half of the United States a chance to see aurora activity.

That is the rare bright note in an otherwise tense forecast.

Still, it says a lot about this moment that even the hopeful part of the outlook comes from a charged atmosphere. Hall’s report painted a picture of a country being pulled in several directions at once by a spring pattern that no longer looks mild or manageable. It looks volatile, oversized, and in some places downright dangerous.

And that may be the most unnerving part of all.

This is late March, but Ryan Hall’s forecast makes it sound like the country has already been shoved into the deep end of the weather season.
