GOP Talked Tough — Then Walked Away From Gun Rights

The latest legislative debacle surrounding the passage of the “Big Beautiful Bill” has left gun owners reeling and GOP leadership under fire for failing to deliver on key promises. While the bill includes some positive measures for gun owners, it ultimately falls short of the major reforms many had hoped for. Ryan Flugaur, Vice President of the National Association for Gun Rights (NAGR), has made it clear in a recent video: the GOP had a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to make significant strides in repealing outdated gun control laws, and they blew it.

A Missed Opportunity

The passage of the Big Beautiful Bill, which has just been sent to President Trump’s desk, has generated mixed reactions from the gun rights community. While it contains some pro-gun provisions, it is widely seen as a missed opportunity by many, including Ryan Flugaur. According to Flugaur, GOP leaders had the chance to make real change for gun owners but ultimately compromised away the most significant provisions, leaving much of the National Firearms Act (NFA) intact.

Not Addressing the Core Issue

In his critique, Flugaur asserts that while the bill does lower the NFA tax on certain firearms, it does little to address the core issue – the NFA’s registration requirements. The law still forces gun owners to comply with a cumbersome and invasive registration process that includes fingerprinting, background checks, and notifications to local law enforcement whenever firearms are moved or transferred. As Flugaur put it, “This bill is nothing more than table scraps compared to what GOP lawmakers promised us.”

Despite the bill’s shortcomings, there is one silver lining: the removal of the $200 tax on items regulated by the NFA, such as short-barreled rifles, short-barreled shotguns, and suppressors. This change will be implemented starting January 1, 2026, making these firearms more accessible to law-abiding gun owners. As Flugaur pointed out, while this is a step in the right direction, the tax is only one part of the NFA’s deeply flawed structure.

And What Was Left Behind

The real problem, according to Flugaur, is that the NFA’s registration requirements were left untouched. Gun owners will still be forced to fill out lengthy forms, including the notorious Form 4473, and submit to fingerprinting. This ongoing bureaucratic process is not only inconvenient but also places unnecessary burdens on responsible gun owners. The GOP, Flugaur argues, had the chance to eliminate these registration requirements entirely, but instead, they settled for a half-measure that doesn’t address the root of the problem.

The GOP’s Broken Promise

One of the key issues that has frustrated many gun owners, including Flugaur, is the fact that GOP leadership made strong promises during the campaign trail to support Second Amendment rights. However, when it came time to deliver, they faltered. Flugaur describes this as a “bait-and-switch,” with Republicans talking tough about protecting gun rights but ultimately walking away from the fight when it mattered most.

“Republicans promised us that they would repeal the NFA tax entirely, that they would eliminate the registration requirements, and that they would make significant strides in protecting our rights. Instead, they’ve given us this watered-down version of a bill that doesn’t even come close to fulfilling those promises,” Flugaur said in his video commentary. This sense of betrayal is felt by many in the gun rights community, who have spent months lobbying lawmakers for real change.

Accountability: Holding Republicans Responsible

In light of these broken promises, Flugaur is calling for accountability from GOP leaders like Senate Majority Leader John Thune and House Speaker Mike Johnson. He urges gun owners to voice their frustration by calling these leaders and demanding that they take immediate action to fully repeal the NFA’s tax and registration scheme.

“We can’t let these politicians off the hook,” Flugaur emphasizes. “If they want our support in the midterms, they need to fix this mess. They need to go back to the table and give us the full repeal of the NFA tax and registration requirements that we were promised.”

The Shortcomings of the Big Beautiful Bill

As Flugaur points out, while some provisions in the Big Beautiful Bill are certainly a step forward for gun rights, they are far from enough. For instance, the elimination of the $200 NFA tax on certain firearms is a positive move, but it does not eliminate the need for gun owners to register their firearms with the ATF. This means that, while gun owners may no longer have to pay a hefty tax for certain firearms, they will still be subjected to the invasive and burdensome registration process.

In addition, Flugaur warns that lowering the NFA tax could open the door for future increases. “If the government can lower the tax to zero dollars, what’s stopping them from raising it to $10,000 in a few years?” he asks. This concern is shared by many in the gun rights community, who fear that the current administration’s efforts to deregulate firearms could ultimately be reversed by future lawmakers seeking to impose stricter controls.

The NFA’s Real Purpose: A Tax on the Second Amendment

Flugaur is quick to remind his audience that the NFA’s original intent was never about public safety. “When the NFA was introduced in 1934, it was a tax designed to limit access to certain types of firearms by making them prohibitively expensive,” he explains. “The government knew it couldn’t outright ban these weapons, so it used the power to tax as a way to effectively eliminate them from civilian ownership.”

The reality, Flugaur argues, is that the NFA is still a tool for restricting gun ownership, even with the proposed tax reductions. The real victory for gun owners would be the complete repeal of both the tax and the registration requirements, which would eliminate one of the most significant barriers to legal firearm ownership in the country.

Looking ahead, Flugaur believes that gun owners must remain vigilant and continue to push for real change. While the passage of the Big Beautiful Bill represents a small victory for gun rights, it falls short of what was promised and what is necessary to secure lasting protections for the Second Amendment.

“The GOP still has time to fix this, but they need to act quickly,” Flugaur concludes. “Gun owners can’t afford to sit back and hope for the best. We need to make our voices heard, hold Republicans accountable, and demand the full repeal of the NFA’s tax and registration requirements.”

As the political landscape prepares for the 2026 midterms, the GOP faces a critical decision. Will they listen to the voices of gun owners and push for the comprehensive reforms that are so desperately needed? Or will they continue to backtrack on their promises and risk alienating one of their most loyal voting blocs?

For now, the future of gun rights in America rests in the hands of GOP leadership. Gun owners, according to Flugaur, must keep the pressure on and demand the action they were promised. The clock is ticking, and the stakes couldn’t be higher.
