Millions of Americans are opening their electric bills and asking the same question: how can the total keep rising when the household is trying to use less power?

That was the issue Adam Snyder raised in a recent Snyder Reports video, where he argued that families across the country are seeing higher electricity costs because of a mix of hotter weather, rising demand, tight supply, and common home-cooling habits that may be costing people more than they realize.

Snyder said many households that once paid between $100 and $200 a month are now seeing bills above $200, while some families are facing monthly charges close to $400 just to keep lights, air conditioning, electronics, and basic appliances running.

For many people, that has turned the electric bill into another monthly shock, right next to groceries, insurance, rent, and everything else that already feels more expensive than it used to.

Snyder Says Demand Is Outrunning Supply

Snyder said one major reason electric bills are rising is simple supply and demand.

He pointed to extreme heat in parts of the country, which can drive up air-conditioning use, and said that higher demand can strain the market at the same time more electricity is being pulled by large users such as data centers.

According to Snyder, those data centers require major amounts of power to operate, and that added demand can leave less available supply for everyone else.

“When we have a lower supply but we have a high demand,” Snyder said, “that right there will likely increase our costs.”

He also cited reports warning that summer electricity bills are expected to be the highest in five years, with consumption projected to climb as extreme weather and drought conditions challenge the grid.

Snyder highlighted concerns from the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission that electricity consumption could be higher this season than during any of the previous five summers. He said drought conditions can also reduce hydropower generation, adding more pressure to the system.

The larger point is uncomfortable but easy to understand: even if a household is careful, it is still buying power inside a larger market that can become more expensive when demand rises and supply becomes tighter.

Some States Are Already Feeling It

Snyder pointed to states such as Connecticut, Massachusetts, and Rhode Island as places that already rank among the most expensive electricity markets in the country.

To show how extreme the problem can feel, he played a clip of a Connecticut resident showing an electric bill of about $1,100 for one month.

That number is not the average bill, but it makes the frustration easy to see. When homeowners are already cutting lights, unplugging chargers, and trying to behave responsibly, a bill that large can feel almost impossible to accept.

Snyder said families are often told to focus on small changes, such as unplugging phone chargers, turning off televisions, and shutting off lights to reduce “phantom power.” Those habits may help at the margins, but he argued that they miss the biggest factor in many homes.

The biggest issue, he said, is the HVAC system.

The Thermostat Advice Snyder Questions

Snyder spent much of his report challenging the common advice that homeowners should set their air conditioning much higher while they are away, then lower it again when they return home.

He said electric companies often tell people to raise the thermostat to around 75 to 78 degrees, or even higher, during the day. But Snyder argued that large swings can make the system work harder later, especially if the whole house warms up.

He quoted one explanation saying that everything inside a home retains heat, including clothes, pictures, carpet, furniture, and walls. If the air conditioning is raised to 80 degrees during the day, the whole house can heat up, and then the system has to work hard in the late afternoon to bring the temperature back down.

According to the explanation Snyder shared, that can use far more electricity than keeping the home at a more consistent temperature.

Snyder said he did not believe that idea at first, but later came around to it after hearing similar advice from HVAC technicians.

“Leave your temperature where it is,” Snyder said, adding that homeowners who want a warmer setting during the day should make a smaller adjustment instead of jumping by 10 degrees or more.

This is one of those household debates where the right answer can depend on the home, the insulation, the system, the weather, and the local rate plan. But Snyder’s warning is useful because big thermostat swings can backfire if the system has to run hard during the hottest and most expensive hours of the day.

Peak Hours Can Make Cooling More Expensive

Snyder also warned that some households may be using the most electricity during peak-rate periods without realizing it.

If a utility charges more during peak hours, he said, then turning the air conditioning way up all day and forcing it to cool the house quickly after work may cause the system to run hardest when electricity costs more.

That can make the bill rise even if total electricity use does not look wildly higher.

In other words, the timing of electricity use can matter almost as much as the amount used. A home that cools slowly and steadily may be cheaper in some cases than one that lets the temperature climb all day and then fights to recover during peak demand.

Snyder’s advice was not to freeze the house all day or ignore costs. His point was that homeowners should think strategically about the thermostat instead of blindly following one-size-fits-all advice.

That is a practical takeaway. Many people manage the thermostat by habit, not by understanding how their home holds heat or how their utility charges for power.

Ceiling Fans, Curtains, And Filters

Snyder also said many people are not using ceiling fans correctly.

He described visiting a friend’s house and noticing that the fan was spinning in the wrong direction for the season. Snyder said some people do not realize that many ceiling fans have a switch that changes the direction of the blades, depending on whether the goal is cooling in summer or circulating warmer air in winter.

He said properly using ceiling fans can help move cool air through the home and reduce how much people rely on their HVAC system.

Snyder also recommended closing doors and windows to keep cool air inside, using blinds or blackout curtains to block heat from entering, installing a smart thermostat, and cleaning filters so the HVAC system can run more efficiently.

Those steps are not flashy, but they are the kinds of small fixes that can add up. A dirty filter, sun pouring through uncovered windows, or a fan pushing air the wrong direction can quietly make an air conditioner work harder than it needs to.

The Real Fight Is Against Heat

Snyder said the summer heat is the part that hurts financially, especially when households are already facing higher electricity prices.

His main advice was that people should take control of the air conditioning system rather than focusing only on tiny savings from unplugging chargers or turning off one lamp.

“By reducing your electric bill, you’re taking control of your AC,” Snyder said.

That does not mean the smaller habits are useless. Turning off lights, unplugging unused devices, and reducing waste still make sense. But for many homes, the largest battle is controlling how much heat enters the house and how hard the cooling system has to work to remove it.

The broader issue is that consumers are being squeezed from both directions. They may be trying to use less, but the price of power can still climb because of grid demand, weather, generation limits, and rate structures that homeowners do not control.

None of those fixes will solve national electricity demand or stop utilities from raising rates. But they may help families reduce waste and avoid the most expensive cooling habits during the hottest months.

As Snyder framed it, the electric bill is no longer something many households can ignore until the end of the month. It has become a bill worth managing day by day, because the heat outside and the habits inside the home can both show up in a painful way when the statement arrives.
