Woman Leads Police on 90 MPH Chase in Stolen Rental Car, Then Blames a Mystery Man Named “Shane” for Everything

A report of a stolen rental vehicle quickly escalated into a dangerous police chase after officers said a woman behind the wheel fled at high speed, ran red lights, and put drivers and pedestrians in serious danger, according to a video report from Midwest Safety.

The host explained that officers initially tried to stop the vehicle after it was reported stolen, but the pursuit became too dangerous to continue once the driver began reaching speeds of about 90 mph through traffic. In the bodycam and radio traffic, officers could be heard describing the suspect as a white woman with long brown hair driving a fairly new, clean rental vehicle.

One officer said the woman was “doing 90 down Middle Beach running red lights,” which led police to terminate the chase rather than continue pushing the risk higher. That decision is worth noting because pursuits like this can turn deadly in seconds, especially when a fleeing driver is already ignoring signals and weaving through populated areas.

Officers backed off, but they kept sharing information about the vehicle’s last known direction, hoping another unit might spot it later without forcing a high-speed pursuit through traffic.

Officers Lose Her, Then a Civilian Helps Box Her In

According to Midwest Safety’s host, the suspect was located only minutes after the chase was terminated, and a local civilian played a major role in preventing her from getting away again.

In the footage, officers said a man used his own vehicle to block the suspect in after she pulled into a business area. The man later told police he saw the woman driving recklessly, nearly hitting vehicles and even almost striking a building as she tried to escape.

“She wiped me out and I blocked her,” the civilian told officers, explaining that he chased the rental vehicle over and used his white truck to keep her from leaving. He said the woman was telling him, “I’ll pay you” and “don’t call the cops,” but he refused because, as he put it, she had already placed children and other people in danger.

The witness also told police he only saw one person in the vehicle. That detail later became important because the suspect repeatedly claimed another man had been inside the rental car and had been the real reason she refused to stop.

Officers thanked the man for helping, though his decision was clearly risky. It is easy to understand why someone watching a reckless driver endanger others would want to intervene, but situations like this can also become dangerous for civilians very quickly.

The Suspect Blames “Shane” for the Chase

After being taken into custody, the woman told officers that a man named Shane had been in the vehicle and had told her to keep driving, according to the footage reviewed by Midwest Safety.

The host explained that, at that stage, it was unclear whether the woman was telling the truth or trying to shift responsibility. She claimed she had dropped Shane off somewhere during the chase, possibly around the Sonic area where officers believed the vehicle had stopped briefly.

“This isn’t right that I’m getting all of this whenever he the one that told me to keep going,” she told police, insisting that Shane was the person who pressured her not to stop.

One officer pushed back on that logic, telling her it would have made more sense to listen to police than to “some Shane.” Another officer asked what Shane was wearing, and she described him as a white man in a gray T-shirt and blue jeans.

Police then broadcast that information, saying a male named Shane may have jumped out of the vehicle and could be somewhere in the neighborhood. Still, multiple witnesses told officers they had only seen the woman in the rental car, and one officer later said he personally saw her in the driver’s seat with her hair “going nuts” as she drove.

A Search Finds a Gun, Drugs and More Questions

The case became more serious after officers searched the stolen rental vehicle and began finding items that raised the stakes beyond fleeing and reckless driving.

In the footage, one officer located a firearm inside the vehicle, along with what appeared to be drugs, multiple cell phones, and other items. “More dope,” an officer said during the search, while another commented that there were “a lot of cell phones” in the vehicle.

When officers asked the woman whether the gun belonged to her, she denied it and said she did not know why it was in her bag. “I swear to God, it’s not,” she told police.

The situation grew more complicated when dispatch advised officers that the woman was a convicted felon. That meant the firearm discovery could lead to additional charges, including possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

An officer summed up the growing list by saying they were looking at “a plethora of charges,” including reckless fleeing and eluding, no valid driver’s license, possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, and drug-related charges.

At that point, the mystery surrounding Shane mattered less than the evidence officers said they had in front of them: the stolen rental, the chase, the firearm, the alleged drugs, and witness accounts placing the woman behind the wheel.

Witnesses Cast Doubt on the Mystery Passenger Story

The woman continued saying Shane had been involved, but officers appeared skeptical as they gathered statements from people who saw the vehicle during and after the chase.

One civilian witness told officers he did not see any man in the car. Another officer said the same, noting that he only saw the female driver when she was operating the vehicle. The host said the question of whether Shane existed, or whether he had actually been in the car, remained one of the lingering issues in the incident.

It is possible, of course, that someone exited the vehicle before witnesses had a clear look. But from the footage, the officers’ frustration seemed to come from the fact that the suspect was using the alleged passenger as an explanation for decisions she made while driving.

The host also reminded viewers that the woman is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.

The case stands out not because of one single charge, but because of how quickly a stolen rental report developed into a wider criminal investigation. What began as a vehicle recovery call turned into a pursuit, then a search, then a firearm and drug case, with the suspect offering a story about a missing man named Shane that witnesses did not clearly support.

The police decision to terminate the chase also shows the balance officers have to strike in these situations. Catching a fleeing suspect matters, but not at the cost of letting a dangerous pursuit become even more dangerous for everyone else on the road.
