A summer blackout can turn an ordinary home into an uncomfortable and potentially dangerous place within a matter of hours, especially when high temperatures are already pushing air conditioners, fans, refrigerators, and local power grids to their limits.
In a new video for DIY Prepper TV, host J.R. laid out a practical approach for handling hot-weather outages without assuming that every family has a generator, solar setup, or expensive backup power station. His main point was simple: during a blackout, people should stop trying to cool an entire house and instead focus on keeping one manageable area livable while avoiding the everyday habits that make indoor heat worse.
J.R. framed the advice around a problem many people underestimate. When the power goes out in summer, the heat does not remain outside. It builds inside through sunlight, cooking, hot showers, poor ventilation, and the simple fact that most homes are designed around the assumption that air conditioning will always be available.
The answer, he argued, is not necessarily buying more equipment. It is often changing the way a household uses its space, water, food, lighting, and limited battery power until electricity returns.
Pick One Room Instead Of Fighting The Whole House
J.R. said the first mistake people make during a summer outage is trying to make their entire home comfortable, which is unrealistic without a large whole-home backup system.
Instead, he advised viewers to choose one room that can become the family’s main cooling and sleeping space. He suggested looking for a small interior room, a downstairs bedroom, or another low area of the home that receives shade and can be closed off from warmer parts of the house.

“Heat rises,” J.R. explained, which is why he encouraged people in multi-story homes to avoid upper floors whenever possible during a blackout.
The room does not need to be perfect. It only needs to be easier to manage than the rest of the house. A doorway can be closed, or covered with a blanket if there is no door, to reduce how much hot air moves through the space.
That approach may sound basic, but it is more realistic than trying to keep a large living room, kitchen, hallways, and bedrooms cool at once with a couple of battery-powered fans. In a prolonged outage, concentrating people, supplies, lighting, water, and cooling efforts in one room can make a difficult situation feel more organized.
J.R.’s advice also recognizes that keeping cool is not always about lowering room temperature. Sometimes it is about slowing the rate at which a room heats up and giving people one place where they can rest, drink water, and avoid direct sun.
Stop Adding Heat To The House
One of the biggest sources of unnecessary indoor heat, J.R. said, is cooking.
He noted that many people may still have access to a gas stove, a butane stove, or another cooking method when the power fails, but using those appliances indoors can quickly make a warm home even hotter.
J.R. recalled living in a small house during college with limited air conditioning, where cooking during the day made the interior feel even more unbearable because heat from the stove spread through the entire space.

His recommendation was to cook outside if cooking is necessary, but he said the better option during extreme heat may be relying on foods that do not need to be cooked at all.
That does not mean skipping meals. It means planning ahead with foods that can be eaten cold, require little preparation, and do not turn the kitchen into another heat source.
He also urged viewers to think about other habits that add heat without people realizing it. Candles, oil lamps, and other flame-based lights can produce heat in a small room, while hot showers create steam that can spread warmth through the house.
For lighting, J.R. preferred inexpensive LED lanterns and flashlights. They are cooler to use, he said, and avoid the extra risk of an open flame during an already stressful outage.
The overall message was practical rather than dramatic: when the power is out, every extra source of heat matters more than people think.
Fans Work Better When They Have Help
J.R. said battery-powered fans are useful, but he cautioned that fans alone do not truly lower the temperature of the air around a person.
Instead, he explained that fans are most helpful when they are moving air across wet skin or damp clothing, allowing evaporation to help cool the body.

He suggested using a spray bottle, a damp cotton shirt, or a wet bandana while sitting in front of a fan. That combination, he said, can feel far more effective than simply sitting in front of warm moving air.
J.R. also warned that a fan may not help in every situation. In very dry heat, he said, hot air blowing across the skin can work against a person, particularly if they are becoming dehydrated and are no longer sweating normally.
He urged viewers to watch for signs that someone may be experiencing heat stroke, including confusion, unusual behavior, or an apparent inability to sweat. In those situations, he said, people should call 911 and use cold wet cloths or ice around areas such as the neck, armpits, and groin while waiting for help.
Another cooling idea J.R. discussed involved placing hands and forearms into cold water. He said this can help because blood vessels in the forearms are close to the skin, making cold water a more direct way to cool the body than simply putting a cloth on the back of the neck.
Whether people use fans, damp clothing, cold water, or shade, the larger point is that the body needs relief before heat stress becomes severe. Waiting until someone feels overwhelmed can leave less room to make calm decisions.
Water, Shade And Timing Matter More Than People Think
Hydration was another major part of J.R.’s blackout plan.
He said people should drink water before they are extremely thirsty, particularly if they are sweating, doing household tasks, or spending time outside in the heat. Cold water, he said, can feel more refreshing and may help a person cool down somewhat from the inside, but simply staying hydrated is the main goal.

J.R. also recommended keeping electrolyte mixes or salty foods available for situations where people are sweating heavily for long periods.
He encouraged viewers to avoid hard physical work during the hottest part of the day and move demanding tasks into the morning or after sunset. That may include yard work, repairs, moving supplies, or anything else that adds strain during an outage.
At the home level, J.R. said the best way to control heat is to stop sunlight before it enters through the windows.
Most people block windows from the inside, he said, but exterior shade can work better because once sunlight passes through glass, much of the heat is already inside the home.
He suggested using shade cloth, tarps, awnings, or even reflective windshield covers on the outside of windows. During the hottest hours, he advised keeping windows shut if outdoor air is warmer than the air inside.
Then, when temperatures fall in the evening or early morning, he said people can open windows to let cooler air move through the home. In a multi-story house, opening higher windows can help warm air escape while lower openings draw in cooler air.
Backup Power Should Match The Job
J.R. was clear that most portable power stations are not built to run a central air-conditioning system for long.
He said even larger battery systems can struggle with the demand of central AC, while a small portable power station may be better suited for phones, lighting, and fans.

For people who have a larger solar generator or backup battery system, J.R. said it may be possible to run a small window unit in one bedroom for limited periods, especially if the system can recharge during the day.
His advice was to check the wattage of any appliance before buying backup power equipment. A power station’s inverter may be able to start an appliance, but that does not mean the battery will run it for long.
He also discussed gas generators, which can be more capable of handling larger appliances but come with serious safety concerns.
J.R. stressed that generators should be operated outside and well away from the home, not in a garage, on a porch, or near an open window. He warned that carbon monoxide is invisible and can become deadly before people realize it is a problem.
He also recommended keeping a battery-operated carbon monoxide detector near the area where people are staying.
Small Preparations Can Make A Major Difference
For people without generators or expensive batteries, J.R. emphasized that lower-cost preparations can still provide meaningful help.
He suggested having several battery-powered fans, LED lights, a cooler, water bottles stored in the freezer, and at least one charged power bank for phones.
Frozen water bottles can help keep food cold for a while, he said, but once they melt they can also be used as drinking water or placed against areas like the neck and wrists for additional cooling.
A cooler can serve more than one purpose during a blackout. Along with keeping food and drinks cold, J.R. said it can hold cold water for the forearm-cooling method.
He also reminded viewers that vehicles can be useful during a short outage. A person can sit in a running vehicle’s air conditioning for a few minutes, recharge phones, or use it as a temporary break from the heat, though he stressed that vehicles should never be run inside a garage.
The cheapest item J.R. highlighted was a battery-powered thermometer that measures temperature and humidity.
He said the device can help people judge whether their home is becoming unsafe instead of relying only on how they feel after hours in the heat. If the room is becoming too hot, he advised leaving for a cooler public place, visiting family or friends with power, or finding another safe location rather than trying to prove they can endure it.
His final message was that summer outages do not always require expensive survival gear. They require planning, awareness, enough water, a few low-cost supplies, and the willingness to leave when conditions inside a home have become too dangerous.
For households facing hot-weather blackouts, that kind of preparation may be less about comfort than about making sure everyone has a safer place to wait until the lights come back on.
