New York City has spent years trying to control its rodent problem, from tougher sanitation rules to more inspections and targeted extermination efforts. But a new report suggests the city may be facing a more difficult challenge than simply finding better traps or putting out more poison.
In a report for Eyewitness News ABC7NY, anchor Michelle Charlesworth said researchers at Rutgers University have found that many mice in the Northeast are carrying genetic mutations that help them survive common rodenticides.
The findings include samples taken from New York City, Washington, D.C., New Jersey, and the Philadelphia region. According to the Rutgers researchers quoted in Charlesworth’s report, about 70% of the mouse populations sampled contained mutations connected to resistance against widely used poisons.
That does not mean every mouse in New York is suddenly impossible to kill. Still, it means some of the methods people expect pest-control companies to use may be losing their power over time, which could make an old city problem even more stubborn.

Williams said mice have been mutating quickly for roughly five years, a period that overlaps with major changes in how people lived, ate, and disposed of food during the COVID era.
As more people ordered takeout, more food waste moved outside homes and restaurants. Trash patterns shifted, feeding habits changed, and rodents spread into different spaces. That may have exposed them to a wider range of poisons and pest-control products.

Williams also pointed to the disappearance of the familiar nightly bags of garbage that had once served as a steady food source for alley rats. Once that routine changed, rodents had to adapt to new conditions, new food sources, and new risks.

Mice And Rats Are Not Exactly The Same Problem
The Rutgers findings centered on mice, but Charlesworth also asked whether rats were mutating in the same way.
The experts said rats are adapting too, although the report did not say they were showing the same genetic pattern as the mice. Rats are known for learning to avoid traps and changing their behavior when they encounter new threats.
Williams put it simply when he said humans will have to become “much more smarter than them.” The wording may have been casual, but the point was clear: pest control cannot stay frozen while rodents keep adapting.

That is especially important in New York City, where rat complaints and visible rodent activity have become a major public concern. The city has invested heavily in cleaning streets, securing trash, conducting inspections, and targeting areas with persistent infestations.
The problem is that poison is only one part of the fight. When resistance grows, relying mainly on chemicals can become less effective, while the rodents that survive may become the foundation for the next generation.
Why More Poison May Not Be The Best Answer
The natural response to poison-resistant mice might be to use stronger poison or more of it. But the experts featured in Charlesworth’s report suggested that approach may not solve the underlying problem.
Researchers recommended reducing dependence on pesticides and putting more attention on prevention. That includes proper trash storage, cutting off food sources, reducing clutter, and improving sanitation around homes, restaurants, and public spaces.
Those steps can sound less dramatic than extermination campaigns, but they address the reason rodents stay in an area in the first place. A mouse does not need to outsmart poison if there is easy food, shelter, and garbage nearby every night.

Charlesworth also asked whether old-fashioned traps could still work. Williams said mouse traps work extremely well, but placement matters.

Birth Control Has Limits Too
The report also touched on rodent birth control, another method often discussed as cities search for ways to reduce rat and mouse populations without relying as heavily on poison.
But the experts made an important point: even a rodent that cannot reproduce can still create problems while it remains alive. It can still spread disease, contaminate food, damage property, and contribute to the larger sanitation issue.

Birth control may help reduce numbers over time, but it is not an immediate answer for an active infestation. As with traps and poison, it works best as part of a larger plan rather than a single fix.
That may be the hardest lesson in the report. People often want one clear solution to a rodent problem, whether it is a stronger chemical, a new trap, or a citywide campaign. But pests rarely stay still long enough for one tool to work forever.

Charlesworth’s report makes clear that Rutgers researchers are continuing to study how rodents are evolving and how communities can respond.
Developing new pest-control chemicals can take years and significant investment, which makes it important to preserve the products that still work. If rodenticides are used carelessly or too often, the pressure on rodents may only increase.
The report also suggests that research on rodent resistance in the United States is still developing. Scientists are learning more about how widespread the mutations are, which poisons are affected, and how cities can change their strategies without simply escalating the chemical response.
For New York City, the news is not that mice have suddenly become unstoppable. It is that the problem may be changing faster than many people realize.
