Shooting a few feral hogs may feel like useful wildlife management, especially when the animals are damaging food plots, competing with deer, and tearing through agricultural land, but experts say random hunting rarely removes enough pigs to reduce the population in any lasting way.
During an episode of The Southern Outdoorsmen, hosts Andrew Maxwell and Jacob Myers spoke with Lindsay Thomas Jr. of the National Deer Association about why feral hogs are so difficult to control, how their presence affects deer and turkeys, and why organized trapping is generally far more effective than recreational shooting.
Thomas said the central problem is the hog’s extraordinary reproductive rate. According to research discussed in the episode, land managers may need to remove roughly 75% of a local hog population every year simply to begin pushing the numbers downward.
“Otherwise, you’re not having an impact,” Thomas said.
Hogs Compete Directly With Deer for Food
Thomas described feral hogs as highly efficient competitors that can locate acorns, persimmons, crab apples, and other seasonal food sources at least as well as deer, and sometimes more effectively.
He recalled bow hunting a property with a serious hog problem after finding several persimmon trees loaded with fruit in a bottomland area. The location appeared ideal for deer, but groups of hogs repeatedly moved from one tree to the next in direct lines, rooting beneath each one before continuing through the swamp.
“It was like they were using OnX,” Thomas said, explaining that the animals seemed to know the precise location of every productive tree.

At one point, a doe approached the area while Thomas prepared for a possible shot, but a squeal behind him announced the return of the hogs. The deer heard them and immediately disappeared.
That experience matched research showing that deer and turkeys often avoid areas with heavy hog activity rather than sharing the same space. Hogs therefore cause two related problems: they consume the food deer would otherwise use, and their presence may discourage deer from visiting those feeding areas at all.
For hunters trying to improve body condition, fawn recruitment, or general deer use on a property, that competition can quietly undermine years of habitat work.
Why Shooting a Few Hogs Does Not Solve the Problem
Myers asked whether nighttime hunting with thermal optics and rifles might actually make control harder by scattering groups before trappers can remove them together.
Thomas said the first rule of feral hog management is that random sport hunting cannot control the population.
The animals reproduce too quickly, and once they experience hunting pressure, they become more cautious, change their movement patterns, and become much harder to locate.
Thomas cited research from the University of Georgia and work conducted at the Savannah River Site in South Carolina, where scientists studied female hogs, pregnancies, litter survival, and reproductive behavior.

Feral hogs are largely hybrids of European wild boar and escaped domestic pigs, he explained, and domestic pigs were bred for rapid reproduction. That trait remains in wild populations and allows them to replace animals lost through occasional hunting with remarkable speed.
A hunter may kill two or three pigs and see immediate activity decline, but that does not necessarily mean the population has been reduced in a meaningful way. The surviving animals may simply have moved, become nocturnal, or learned to avoid the location.
This is where perception can be misleading. Fewer hog sightings after a shooting may look like success, while the animals are still present nearby and continuing to reproduce.
Whole-Sounder Trapping Works Better
Thomas said the most effective ground-based strategy is usually whole-sounder removal.
A sounder is a family group made up mainly of adult females, younger boars, and piglets that travel together. Older boars often become more solitary, but removing the female family groups has a much greater effect on future population growth.
The goal is to condition the entire group to enter a large corral, drop trap, or passive net system before the trap is activated.
Thomas described using a passive net trap on the same property where he had watched hogs feeding beneath persimmon trees. The managers rotated the system among three baited locations and captured groups of roughly 32, 18, and 20 animals.
The effect was immediate.
During previous seasons, hunters frequently saw hogs and struggled to see deer, but after the sounders were removed, the group noticed more deer and far fewer pigs.
That observation was consistent across the people hunting the property, Thomas said, and it supported the research showing that deer return more readily when hog pressure is reduced.
Trapping requires patience because the operator must wait until every member of the group is comfortable entering. An older, wary sow may stand outside while younger pigs feed, and dropping the trap too early can educate the remaining animal and make her extremely difficult to catch later.
Thomas said managers should use trail cameras to identify individual sounders, estimate how many animals belong to each one, and wait until the full group is inside before triggering the system.
Control Requires Patience and Continued Work
Maxwell and Myers noted that many landowners assume traps are too expensive or complicated, but Thomas said assistance is often available through state wildlife agencies, county offices, and federal programs.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture supports large feral hog control efforts because the animals cause extensive agricultural, soil, and water damage, while the Natural Resources Conservation Service may offer equipment, training, or local guidance.
Some states loan or rent traps, and professional trappers can also be hired to handle the process.
Thomas encouraged hunters to contact their state wildlife agency or local NRCS office rather than assuming they must solve the problem alone.
He also warned that one successful removal does not permanently protect a property located within a heavily infested region.
Thomas discussed an Auburn University study in which serious hog removal led to increased deer and turkey presence on trail cameras, but pigs began returning within months after trapping stopped.
The lesson was not that trapping had failed, but that neighboring populations quickly moved back into the available habitat.
In areas where hogs are widespread, control must be treated as an ongoing management program rather than a single project. Landowners may need to keep traps ready, continue monitoring cameras, and respond as soon as a new sounder appears.
Hog Pressure Can Affect Land and Wildlife Value
The hosts said feral hogs are increasingly becoming a concern in recreational property sales, particularly among buyers who want to manage land for deer and turkey.
Heavy pig populations can damage food plots, destroy roads, dig holes large enough to damage tractors, muddy streams, eat mast crops, and disturb habitat used by both game and nongame species.
Thomas agreed that hogs can become a serious liability for anyone focused on whitetails, turkeys, habitat diversity, soil health, or water quality.
Some buyers may see the opportunity to hunt pigs as an advantage, but those who have dealt with major hog damage often view them very differently.
As Maxwell observed, people who are most enthusiastic about hog hunting are not always the same people paying to repair the damage afterward.
That distinction matters because feral pigs can become economically valuable as a hunting attraction, creating an incentive to maintain or even move them rather than eliminate them.
Thomas said this is one reason some states have restricted recreational hog hunting in areas where eradication remains possible.
Why Some States Limit Hog Hunting
Myers and Maxwell pointed to Missouri and Kentucky as examples of states that have placed limits on hog hunting, a policy that can appear confusing when officials also say they want the animals removed.
Thomas explained that unrestricted hunting can create two major problems.
First, it may encourage people to transport and release pigs in new areas so they can create future hunting opportunities or charge others to hunt them. Once money becomes attached to the presence of hogs, complete eradication may no longer be in everyone’s interest.

Second, shooting at a newly discovered group can scatter the animals before wildlife officials have an opportunity to trap or remove the entire sounder.
Missouri remains near the outer edge of established feral hog territory and still has a realistic chance of eliminating them statewide, Thomas said. As a result, officials prefer landowners to report sightings rather than immediately begin shooting.
The state and federal partners can then use traps, thermal drones, and helicopters while the pigs remain relatively undisturbed and predictable.
Thermal drones help locate groups efficiently, reducing the time and cost of helicopter operations, while aerial removal can reach remote terrain where traps are difficult to install.
The same principle applies whether officials are using a net trap or a helicopter: the objective is organized removal of many animals at once, not occasional success against individual pigs.
Hunting Can Still Have a Place, but Not as Population Control
Thomas did not argue that hunters should never shoot or eat feral hogs where hunting is legal.
He said people can enjoy hunting them and making use of the meat, but they should not confuse recreation with population reduction.
“Don’t fool yourself into thinking you’re reducing hog numbers,” he said.
Dog hunting can create the same management problem because the pressure may push surviving pigs onto neighboring land and make them more difficult to trap later.
For landowners whose main goal is healthier deer, stronger turkey use, and improved habitat, the better strategy is to think beyond individual kills and focus on entire sounders.
That may be less exciting than a nighttime hunt with thermal equipment, but the results are far more likely to last.
The larger message from Thomas, Maxwell, and Myers was that feral hog management requires cooperation, discipline, and realistic expectations. Random shooting may remove a few animals and provide immediate satisfaction, but reducing damage and helping deer return requires removing large portions of the population, avoiding the education of survivors, and remaining vigilant after the first success.
For hunters who care about the long-term condition of their land, the most productive response is not simply to shoot every hog they see, but to build a plan capable of removing the whole group and repeating the process whenever the animals return.
