A dispute over a $55 restaurant bill at Tampa International Airport ended with a woman being arrested after officers said she repeatedly failed to produce a working form of payment, despite being given multiple opportunities to settle the check.

Bodycam footage shared by the YouTube channel NYDETECTIVE shows officers responding on June 9, 2026, after staff at a P.F. Chang’s restaurant reported that the woman, identified in the footage as Deja, had not paid her $55.32 bill.

According to the channel’s narrator, officers even helped charge her phone so she could access Apple Pay, but the attempt ultimately failed because there were not enough funds available, and a call to her mother did not produce another way to cover the meal.

Woman Says Her Food Was Being Threatened

The encounter began with Deja trying to explain why she had not paid.

She told Officer Dast that she had come into the restaurant for food but believed members of the staff had been threatening to tamper with her meal before and after she ordered it.

Deja said the issue was tied partly to comments she believed she heard from employees and to the music being played in the restaurant, although the officers repeatedly asked her to identify exactly who had threatened her food.

She also said she had previously experienced similar problems at another property and claimed she had documentation in her bag.

One officer pushed back on that explanation and told her that loud music did not amount to a threat against her food.

The officers also noted that she had been moving between different areas of the airport and had left her belongings behind while trying to charge her phone.

Deja, however, said she had called police herself because she did not feel safe speaking with restaurant management alone and claimed corporate representatives had instructed her to have officers present.

That part of the encounter shows why the situation became so drawn out. Deja wanted officers to address her broader complaint with the restaurant, while the officers were focused on the much narrower question of whether she was going to pay the bill.

Officers Say Surveillance Showed No Tampering

One officer told Deja that they would review surveillance video and speak with restaurant employees before deciding what had happened.

He said he was not simply going to accept one side’s account without checking the facts.

Later in the encounter, officers said they had reviewed the video and found no evidence that anyone had tampered with her food.

At that point, the dispute over corporate policy and alleged harassment became secondary.

An officer told Deja that if she had a complaint against the company, that was a civil matter, while police were there to deal with a possible criminal issue involving payment.

The officer also made clear that ordering food and then deciding not to eat all of it did not erase the obligation to pay.

“You can’t order something and then decide you’re not going to pay for it,” he told her.

Her Phone Is Charged, But Apple Pay Still Fails

Deja said her credit cards were stored on her phone and that the device had died, which was why she had been trying to use a charger.

The officers and restaurant staff then made an effort to help her power the phone back on and bring over a mobile payment reader.

That gave her a direct chance to settle the check.

When the Apple Pay attempt did not go through, the officers began asking whether there was anyone else who could pay the restaurant over the phone.

Deja suggested calling her mother.

Officer Graham then contacted Deja’s mother and explained that her daughter was at the airport with a restaurant bill of a little more than $55 that still needed to be paid.

According to the conversation captured on bodycam, Deja’s mother said her daughter should have money from work but also made clear that she could not pay the bill herself.

The officer returned to Deja and told her that he did not want to take her to jail, but that the situation was reaching the point where arrest would be the only option if she could not pay.

“I’m trying to take care of you,” he said.

More Payment Attempts Lead Nowhere

Deja continued telling officers that she had other cards and could arrange for someone to send her money.

She also said she had extra fraud protection on one of her accounts and suggested that was interfering with the transaction.

The officers repeatedly asked a simpler question: did she currently have another card that could pay the bill?

Deja said she did, but the conversation kept circling back to hypothetical transfers and another account that might eventually work.

One officer eventually told her he was not willing to keep waiting for another possible payment method that might or might not materialize.

Deja then argued that corporate had supposedly said the restaurant should remove the charge because of her complaint.

The officers said that was not what they had been told and that, based on the video review, there was no evidence supporting her claim that the food had been tampered with.

At that point, the officer ended the discussion.

“We’re done,” he said.

Arrest Follows After Repeated Warnings

Deja asked why she was being arrested and insisted that she had not been given a fair chance to pay.

The officer disagreed and pointed out that he had helped charge her phone, allowed multiple payment attempts and even called her mother.

“I did give you a chance. More than one chance,” he told her.

Deja then accused the officers of “race baiting” the situation.

One of the officers, who told her he was Black, rejected that accusation immediately and said race had nothing to do with the transaction.

He told Deja that by sitting down, ordering food and consuming part of it, she had agreed to pay for the meal.

Deja responded that she had only eaten a small amount.

The officer said that did not change the problem because she still did not have the means to pay for what she had ordered.

This was the key turning point in the encounter. Whether Deja believed she had a valid complaint with the restaurant was separate from the immediate issue of the unpaid bill, and once every practical attempt to collect payment failed, officers stopped treating the matter as a customer-service dispute.

She Is Charged With Theft Of Services

As officers escorted her away, Deja continued asking why she was being arrested.

She said she had never left the restaurant and had been trying to pay.

Officers told her that her belongings would be taken to airport lost and found because the jail would not accept them, and that she would have time to retrieve them later.

Deja continued insisting that her lawyer was already aware of the situation and that police had prevented her from resolving it.

An officer finally stated the charge plainly.

“You’ve been arrested for theft of services,” he told her.

The NYDETECTIVE narrator later confirmed that Deja was charged with theft of services.

The bodycam footage shows an encounter that began as a relatively small restaurant dispute but became increasingly complicated because Deja wanted officers to address allegations about the staff while the officers were trying to resolve whether she could pay the bill.

By the time the arrest was made, officers had reviewed the restaurant’s video, helped revive her phone, attempted Apple Pay, asked about other cards and called her mother.

The result was a case where the amount involved was only $55.32, but the failure to produce a working payment method ultimately turned the dispute into a criminal matter.
