A New Jersey woman accused of opening fire on police from her home while one of her young children was still inside now faces several serious charges after a shootout that left both her and a Montclair officer wounded.

Bodycam footage featured by Police Insider shows the response unfolding on Forest Street in Montclair after officers were called about an armed woman who had reportedly come outside with a rifle while shouting that the area was her territory.

The woman was later identified as 39-year-old Maryann Swain.

According to the channel’s narration and charging information included with the footage, Officer Michael J. Medrano, 33, was struck in the shoulder during the exchange, while another officer returned fire and hit Swain.

Both survived.

Neighbor Says She Came Outside With a Rifle

Before officers moved toward the home, they spoke with a nearby resident who described seeing Swain come outside carrying a rifle and yelling.

“This is my territory,” the neighbor recalled her saying.

The witness also told officers that Swain had two children and that at least one young boy, around 4 or 5 years old, was still inside.

That immediately changed the risk of the response.

Police were no longer dealing only with an armed person inside a residence; they also had to consider the possibility of a child trapped in the middle of any confrontation.

Bodycam audio shows officers discussing shields, sight lines and the need to move carefully because of recent attacks on police.

The concern was clear.

They believed they could be walking into an ambush.

Gunfire Erupts as Officers Approach

As officers moved into position, the situation suddenly exploded.

Bodycam footage captures the sound of gunfire, followed by officers yelling, “Shots fired,” while scrambling for cover.

One officer repeatedly shouted that his gun had fallen.

Another checked on him and tried to determine whether anyone had been hit.

The channel narrator later explained that Medrano was struck in the shoulder.

Another Montclair officer returned fire, striking Swain.

The footage is chaotic, with officers yelling over one another, backing away and trying to figure out where the shots were coming from while also checking each other for injuries.

That confusion is one of the most striking parts of the video.

For several seconds, officers do not appear to know who has been hit, how badly, or whether Swain is still actively firing.

Swain Says She Was Shot

After the initial exchange, Swain can be heard speaking from inside or near the residence.

She again repeats language about “Ryan’s territory” and identifies herself as “Athena,” saying Ryan is her boyfriend.

Officers try to calm her down and tell her they only want to talk.

At one point, Swain says she has been shot.

“You shot me,” she tells officers.

One officer responds that police had not fired first and tells her that she had opened fire on them.

The bodycam then captures officers ordering her to put the gun down and come out with her hands up.

Eventually, she does.

Officers move in, restrain her and begin checking for injuries.

The footage also shows how shaken some of the officers were immediately after the gunfire.

One can be heard breathing heavily and asking colleagues to check him for wounds.

Child Found Inside With Blood on His Face

Once Swain was in custody, officers still had to clear the house because they knew at least one child could be inside.

They entered the residence and eventually found a young boy in a bedroom.

The child had blood on his face, prompting immediate concern about whether he had been struck or otherwise injured.

Officers tried to calm him while asking whether anyone else was in the house.

“It’s okay,” one officer told him. “You’re good.”

Another called him a “brave kid” and repeatedly reassured him that everything would be all right.

The blood was later determined not to be his.

Even so, the image of a young child being brought out of a home moments after a gunfight between his mother and police makes the incident especially disturbing.

The channel’s host emphasized that Swain had two young children, and the presence of the boy inside became part of the basis for the child-endangerment charge.

Nearby School Was Placed on Lockdown

The shooting also affected the surrounding neighborhood.

Police Insider reported that a nearby school was placed on lockdown while authorities were still trying to understand the situation and secure the area.

That response made sense given the uncertainty.

Officers had just been fired on in a residential area, one of their own had been wounded, and they still did not know whether anyone else inside the home posed a threat.

The scene therefore expanded beyond a single property and became a wider public-safety incident.

Officer and Suspect Both Survived

Medrano and Swain were taken to University Hospital in Newark.

Police Insider reported that both suffered injuries that were not considered life-threatening.

Medrano was later released from the hospital the same day.

Swain remained hospitalized before being transferred into custody.

The bodycam footage shows officers repeatedly checking on Medrano and each other after the exchange, with some clearly rattled by how quickly the call turned violent.

That part of the video gives a better sense of the danger than a short charging summary ever could.

The incident moved from a neighborhood complaint about an armed woman to a close-range shootout within minutes.

Swain Faces Multiple Charges

Authorities later charged Swain with aggravated assault, endangering the welfare of a child, unlawful possession of a weapon and possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose.

Police Insider said she was to be held at the Essex County Correctional Facility after her release from the hospital and pending a court appearance.

No official sentencing information was available in the video.

Because the case shown in the footage centered on charges rather than a final conviction, those allegations still had to be resolved through the court process.

Still, the bodycam itself captures the seriousness of what officers encountered.

A witness reported a woman outside with a rifle, officers approached carefully because a child was inside, shots were fired, one officer was hit, another officer fired back, and police then had to enter the house to rescue a frightened child.

A Call That Could Have Ended Much Worse

The most remarkable part of the incident is how many people were put at risk at once.

Swain was wounded.

Medrano was wounded.

A young child was inside the house during the gunfire.

Other officers were exposed in the street, while neighbors and a nearby school had to shelter as police tried to regain control.

Police Insider framed the encounter as an example of how quickly an armed-person call can turn into an officer-involved shooting.

That is hard to dispute after watching the footage.

The officers had been warned that Swain had a rifle, but even with that information, the actual burst of gunfire happened almost instantly.

What followed was a frantic effort to stop the threat, treat the injured and make sure the children inside the home were safe.

In the end, both the officer and Swain survived, and the child was removed from the residence.

Given how close the gunfire was and how many people were exposed, that outcome could easily have been much worse.
