A dangerous weather pattern will continue shifting toward the East Coast on Wednesday as severe thunderstorms threaten parts of Virginia, North Carolina, and a long corridor stretching from South Carolina to Maine, while Tropical Storm Bertha approaches the central Gulf Coast with risks from storm surge, flooding, gusty winds, and isolated tornadoes.
Meteorologist Max Schuster, host of the Max Velocity – Severe Weather Center, said the powerful upper-level storm responsible for the broader outbreak will move toward the Atlantic, but the threat will not disappear immediately. Scattered storms may still produce damaging winds and a few brief tornadoes near the coast before attention turns more fully toward Bertha and its expected approach to Louisiana.
Although Wednesday’s severe weather is not expected to match the wider outbreak that struck farther west, Schuster warned that people should not dismiss the remaining danger, particularly near Norfolk, Virginia Beach, Richmond, and Raleigh.
At the same time, Bertha is expected to move toward southern Louisiana before weakening inland, creating a separate threat for coastal communities from New Orleans eastward through Mississippi, Alabama, and the Florida Panhandle.
Severe Weather Shifts Toward the East Coast
Schuster said the main severe weather zone will be concentrated closer to the Atlantic on Wednesday, with a slight risk covering areas near Richmond, Virginia Beach, and Raleigh.
A broader marginal risk extends from South Carolina northward through parts of Virginia, Maryland, Pennsylvania, New York, and New England, reaching as far as Maine.

The primary concern will be isolated to widely scattered damaging wind gusts. Thunderstorms may form in clusters or broken lines, allowing some cells to produce sudden bursts of strong wind even without developing into long-lived supercells.
The hail threat appears limited, and Schuster said no organized hail risk had been outlined in the forecast he reviewed.
That does not make the storms harmless. Wind-driven tree damage and scattered power outages can still occur in communities that never receive a tornado warning, particularly where the ground has already been softened by recent rain.
Localized flooding may also develop beneath slower-moving storms or where several thunderstorms pass over the same area.
Norfolk and Virginia Beach Face the Highest Tornado Concern
The tornado risk will generally be low, but Schuster said an isolated tornado or two cannot be ruled out.
He identified the Norfolk and Virginia Beach area as the corridor most likely to support a rotating storm, with some risk extending inland toward locations east of Richmond.
Forecast guidance showed elevated values in a narrow section of southeastern Virginia, suggesting that a supercell could rotate if it remained separate from surrounding storms and took advantage of the available wind shear.

Schuster said the environment could support a tornado if the right storm developed, although the overall setup was not expected to produce a large outbreak.
That distinction is important. A low regional tornado risk still matters to the person whose home happens to be beneath the one storm that begins rotating.
Residents across southeastern Virginia and northeastern North Carolina should keep alerts enabled and avoid assuming the threat has ended simply because the most widespread severe weather has moved away.
The storms may be more isolated than the previous day’s activity, which can sometimes make them easier to overlook until a warning is issued.
Heavy Rain Could Hide Any Developing Tornado
Schuster also warned that the atmosphere contains unusually high moisture, with precipitable water values near or above two inches in some areas.
That amount of moisture allows thunderstorms to produce intense rainfall and can make tornadoes difficult or impossible to see.
A tornado wrapped in heavy rain may approach without the familiar visible funnel that people expect, especially in areas filled with trees, buildings, or low visibility near the coast.
Schuster urged viewers not to step outside and attempt to record severe weather when warnings are issued.
The safest response is to move into a sturdy building, reach the lowest available level, and shelter in an interior room away from windows.
That advice may sound basic, but it remains necessary in an era when people frequently place themselves in danger to capture dramatic footage. A rain-wrapped tornado offers little warning to anyone trying to watch it approach.
Radar, official warnings, and reliable phone alerts are far more useful than looking through a window.
Tropical Storm Bertha Approaches Louisiana
While the severe weather risk moves east, Tropical Storm Bertha is expected to become the larger concern along the Gulf Coast.
Schuster said Bertha was a relatively weak tropical storm with maximum sustained winds near 40 mph at the time of his forecast, although some additional strengthening remained possible before landfall.
The storm’s thunderstorm activity was concentrated mainly south of its exposed circulation center, a sign that wind shear and dry air were disrupting its organization.

Those hostile conditions should prevent rapid intensification, and Schuster considered hurricane development highly unlikely.
For Bertha to strengthen much more significantly, it would need to remain farther south over the open Gulf for a longer period. Most forecast models did not support that scenario.
Instead, the storm was expected to drift toward southern Louisiana and approach the New Orleans region between late Wednesday and Thursday.
Schuster estimated that Bertha could peak as a moderate tropical storm with winds near 50 mph before reaching land.
Forecast uncertainty remained, however, and even a relatively small shift in the track could change which communities receive the strongest winds, deepest surge, and heaviest rainfall.
Storm Surge May Be the Main Coastal Hazard
Schuster said storm surge could become one of Bertha’s most significant threats, despite the storm’s limited intensity.
Water pushed toward the Louisiana coastline can flood low-lying roads, marsh communities, and locations outside major levee systems, even when wind speeds remain well below hurricane strength.
The shape of the coastline and the storm’s slow movement may allow water to accumulate in vulnerable areas around southeastern Louisiana.
Gusty winds are also expected near the center and within stronger rain bands. These winds could bring down weak trees, damage unsecured outdoor items, and interrupt power service.
People living in surge-prone areas should pay close attention to local evacuation guidance and road closures rather than judging the danger only by Bertha’s category or maximum wind speed.
Tropical storms often produce their worst consequences through water, not wind.
A storm does not need to become a hurricane to make roads impassable or flood homes near bays, sounds, and tidal waterways.
Flooding Rain May Remain Near the Coast
Schuster said most of Bertha’s heaviest rain was expected to remain offshore because the strongest convection was displaced south of the center.
That would limit widespread inland flooding if the storm followed the expected track.
New Orleans and nearby sections of southeastern Louisiana appeared to have the greatest chance of receiving heavier rainfall, particularly if the circulation moved slightly farther north or west.

The forecast remained sensitive to track changes. A modest adjustment could bring more moisture onshore and increase flash-flood concerns across Louisiana, Mississippi, or Alabama.
Even where rain totals remain lower, brief tropical downpours can overwhelm drains and flood streets in urban communities.
Drivers should avoid crossing water-covered roads, especially after dark when depth is difficult to judge.
After moving through southern Louisiana, Bertha is expected to weaken while tracking generally westward toward eastern Texas and the Houston region.
Its exact path and speed after landfall will determine whether pockets of heavy rain continue farther inland later in the week.
Outer Bands Could Produce Brief Tornadoes
Bertha’s outer rain bands may also generate isolated tornadoes along the northeastern side of the storm.
Schuster highlighted the Florida Panhandle and southern Alabama as areas where a brief tropical tornado could develop as bands rotate inland.
The risk may extend westward with the storm toward Mississippi and Louisiana.
Tropical tornadoes are often weak and short-lived, but they can form quickly and may receive little advance warning.
They are also commonly hidden within heavy rain, making visual confirmation unlikely.
Communities far from Bertha’s center should therefore remain alert, since outer bands can produce severe weather hundreds of miles from the circulation.
A person does not need to be near the expected landfall point to experience damaging winds or a tornado warning.
An Intense Pattern Begins to Ease Later This Week

The broader severe weather system should gradually move offshore after Wednesday, reducing the organized thunderstorm threat across the eastern United States.
Scattered rain and storms may continue in some areas, but the atmosphere is expected to become less supportive of a widespread outbreak once the upper-level trough reaches the Atlantic.
Bertha will remain the main weather story into Thursday as it approaches Louisiana and begins moving inland.
The storm may weaken quickly after landfall, but lingering moisture could continue producing heavy rain in parts of the Gulf Coast and lower Mississippi Valley.
Schuster’s forecast presents two different hazards unfolding at the same time: a fading but still meaningful severe weather risk on the East Coast and a tropical system moving toward Louisiana.
Neither threat appears likely to reach the most extreme level, but both could become dangerous for people who are caught unprepared.
Damaging winds, rain-wrapped tornadoes, storm surge, and flash flooding do not require a historic outbreak or major hurricane.
For those in southeastern Virginia and eastern North Carolina, Wednesday will require continued attention to thunderstorm warnings. Along the Gulf Coast, the focus will shift toward Bertha’s track, coastal water levels, and any last-minute changes that bring heavier rain inland.
