A highly active weather pattern is developing across a large part of the United States, bringing the threat of destructive winds, large hail, isolated tornadoes, and repeated rounds of thunderstorms to millions of people during the opening days of the week.

Meteorologist Max Schuster, host of the YouTube channel Max Velocity – Severe Weather Center, said the most serious part of the pattern will unfold Monday and Tuesday as a powerful jet stream pushes an energized storm system from the Midwest and Great Lakes toward the Ohio Valley and East Coast.

The setup is unusual not because severe storms never happen in late July, but because of how many regions could face damaging weather in such a short period. The main threat will move through several densely populated areas, placing cities from Chicago and Detroit to Cleveland, Washington, D.C., and parts of the Northeast under some level of concern.

Monday’s Threat Centers on the Great Lakes

Schuster said a large slight risk of severe weather surrounds the Great Lakes on Monday, covering nearly all of Michigan and much of Ohio and Indiana.

The broader risk area also stretches toward Buffalo, Philadelphia, Washington, D.C., and Nashville, although storms in those areas are expected to be more isolated. The strongest concentration of damaging winds is forecast around Detroit, Cleveland, and Indianapolis.

Large hail will also remain possible, especially closer to Green Bay and Milwaukee, although Schuster said hailstones are not expected to grow much larger than golf ball size.

There is also a low tornado risk extending from the Chicago area through Kenosha and Janesville in Wisconsin, then eastward toward Fort Wayne, Indiana. While the overall tornado threat is limited, Schuster warned that an isolated stronger tornado cannot be completely ruled out.

That detail is important because late-July storms are often discussed mainly in terms of wind damage, yet the atmosphere can still produce a brief but serious tornado when the right ingredients line up. A low tornado risk does not mean no risk, particularly in a pattern with strong instability and powerful winds higher in the atmosphere.

Schuster urged people across the affected area to have more than one way to receive weather alerts, especially because storms could continue into the evening and may arrive after earlier activity has already moved through.

Morning Storms Could Change the Entire Forecast

One of the largest uncertainties involves what happens Monday morning across southern Wisconsin, northern Illinois, and nearby parts of the Midwest.

Schuster outlined two very different scenarios, and the final outcome could determine whether the afternoon becomes a more scattered severe weather event or a much more dangerous outbreak of powerful storms.

In the first scenario, a cluster of thunderstorms remains active through the morning. These storms could already produce damaging winds, hail, and a serious flash-flooding threat, particularly across southern Wisconsin and northern Illinois.

However, widespread morning storms could also cool and stabilize the atmosphere, limiting the amount of energy available later in the day. Under that outcome, afternoon storms across Michigan, Indiana, and Ohio may be weaker or less widespread.

This is one of the more fascinating parts of severe weather forecasting, because early storms can create danger while also reducing another threat later. The same thunderstorms that cause flooding and wind damage in the morning may leave behind cooler air that prevents a more explosive afternoon setup.

The second scenario would involve little morning thunderstorm activity, allowing heat and instability to build across the Great Lakes and Midwest.

If that happens, Schuster expects explosive storm development during the late afternoon, possibly beginning around 4 or 5 p.m. near Chicago, Iowa, and across Michigan.

Numerous thunderstorms could then move into Indiana, Ohio, and central and southern Michigan, producing widespread downburst winds. Discrete supercells would also carry a tornado and large-hail risk before storms merge into larger lines or clusters.

Schuster said the absence of widespread morning storms could lead to a higher-end severe weather threat and possibly an upgraded risk from the Storm Prediction Center.

Damaging Winds Could Become the Main Hazard

Although hail and tornadoes remain possible, Schuster repeatedly emphasized that damaging winds are likely to be the most widespread concern.

Thunderstorms may produce downburst wind gusts as they move across the Great Lakes and Ohio Valley, with some storms capable of causing significant damage to trees, power lines, roofs, and other structures.

These winds form when rapidly sinking air inside a thunderstorm spreads outward after reaching the ground. In a highly unstable atmosphere, clusters of storms can produce repeated bursts of destructive wind over a large area.

The danger is sometimes underestimated because straight-line winds do not receive the same attention as tornadoes, even though they can damage homes, overturn vehicles, and knock out electricity across entire communities. When several storm clusters travel along the same corridor, the result can be a long and disruptive night for residents and emergency crews.

Schuster said storm activity could continue well into Monday evening across Ohio and Indiana, particularly if the atmosphere remains largely undisturbed during the morning.

People in the risk zone may need to pay close attention throughout the day rather than assuming the threat has passed after one storm. Multiple rounds are possible, and later storms could become stronger if enough unstable air remains in place.

Tuesday Shifts the Danger Toward the East Coast

By Tuesday, the main severe weather threat is expected to shift eastward, affecting a broad region from New York and Albany south through Kentucky and Tennessee.

Schuster said the greatest risk appears to be centered over Virginia and Maryland, where numerous storms may develop during the day.

The primary hazard will again be damaging wind gusts, generally between 60 and 80 mph. Some thunderstorms could also produce hail up to golf ball size, along with a few tornadoes.

A large number of storms may form across the region, increasing the chance that damaging winds affect more than just isolated communities.

Schuster urged residents along the East Coast to remain weather aware on Tuesday, especially in areas where storms could intensify quickly. The threat includes major travel corridors and heavily populated metropolitan areas, meaning even scattered wind damage could cause significant transportation and power disruptions.

The movement of the system from the Midwest to the East Coast shows how broad this weather pattern is. Instead of one local outbreak, the storm threat is expected to progress across several regions over consecutive days, repeatedly placing new communities in its path.

Quieter Weather May Arrive by Midweek

After Tuesday, Schuster expects the severe weather risk to become more isolated across the country.

By Wednesday, a few severe storms may still develop across the Northeast, while another smaller risk could emerge over Nebraska or North Dakota. Damaging winds would remain the main concern in those areas.

Thursday currently appears quieter, with no widespread severe weather expected, although isolated storms may develop across the northern Plains.

The West Coast is expected to remain largely inactive in terms of severe thunderstorms.

Additional storms may return to the Midwest by Friday or Saturday, but Schuster said the threat appears isolated based on the available forecast information.

This break in widespread activity would be welcome after two potentially busy days, but the quieter period may not last long. Conditions beyond the middle of the week remain uncertain, and small changes in the upper-level pattern could bring new areas of severe weather back into focus.

Schuster is also watching the first week of August, when another active weather pattern may develop over the Midwest and northern Plains.

The exact timing and intensity remain unclear, but the larger atmospheric setup could support additional rounds of severe storms.

He said the southern Plains and Southeast are generally beyond their main severe weather season by August and September, making widespread outbreaks less likely there. However, isolated events can still happen, especially when tropical storms or hurricanes move into the region.

For now, the most immediate concern remains Monday and Tuesday, when a powerful storm system will move through the Great Lakes, Ohio Valley, and East Coast.

The combination of widespread damaging winds, large hail, flooding concerns, and a limited tornado threat makes this a pattern that could affect millions of people even if the worst conditions remain scattered.

Schuster’s forecast highlights how quickly the risk may change depending on morning thunderstorm activity, and that uncertainty makes it especially important for residents to continue checking updated forecasts rather than relying on a single outlook.

The severe weather threat will not be identical in every location, but the scale of the system means many communities could face dangerous conditions before the pattern finally begins to weaken later in the week.
