Meteorologist Warns Something Very Big Is Developing This Weekend...

A potentially dangerous severe weather setup is developing for Saturday across the Ohio Valley and Mid-Atlantic, where millions of people could face large hail, damaging winds, isolated tornadoes, and flash flooding before a powerful storm line pushes toward the East Coast after dark.

Meteorologist Ryan Hall, host of the Ryan Hall, Y’all weather channel, said the weekend pattern is becoming more concerning rather than fading as newer forecast guidance shows stronger storm energy and enough wind shear to organize thunderstorms into a widespread event.

More than 52 million people from Indianapolis to Washington, D.C., were included in a slight risk for severe weather in Hall’s forecast, while another 75 million people from Chicago and Detroit to New York were within a broader marginal-risk zone.

“This is going to be the real deal,” Hall warned, adding that Saturday could become an all-hazards weather day across a heavily populated part of the country.

Saturday’s Threat Continues to Build

The developing storm will be driven by several shortwave disturbances moving around the northern edge of a strong ridge before dropping out of Canada and into the upper Ohio Valley.

A cold front will then press into exceptionally humid air, with dew points near 70 degrees reaching as far north as western New York.

That level of moisture is more typical of tropical air and will provide thunderstorms with a large amount of fuel.

Hall said some forecast models had increased the amount of available storm energy, while stronger winds above the surface should help thunderstorms remain organized rather than behaving like brief, scattered summer downpours.

The main risk area includes Philadelphia, Columbus, Indianapolis, Baltimore, and Washington, D.C.

Chicago, Detroit, New York City, and communities surrounding the central risk zone may also experience severe storms, though the highest confidence remains farther south and east.

Hall noted that morning rainfall and lingering cloud cover could reduce the threat by limiting afternoon heating.

Canadian wildfire smoke could have a similar effect by blocking some sunlight and lowering instability, as it did during a previous severe weather setup in the Northeast.

However, if skies clear and temperatures rise as expected, the atmosphere could become highly unstable by Saturday afternoon.

The forecast therefore depends heavily on conditions during the first half of the day, but Hall said the overall trend was moving toward a stronger event.

Large Hail Could Develop First

The first severe thunderstorms are expected to form during the late afternoon across Ohio and western New York as the front reaches the moisture-rich air.

People in the Indianapolis and Columbus corridor may be among the first to see storms develop.

Hall said very large hail could become the leading threat during the early stages, particularly across the northern portion of the risk area where storms may remain more isolated before merging into a larger complex.

Any isolated storm that develops in strong instability and favorable upper-level winds could also produce a tornado, though tornadoes were not expected to be the most widespread hazard.

Farther south, a separate disturbance east of the Appalachian Mountains may trigger thunderstorms along the Blue Ridge in temperatures near 90 degrees.

These storms will initially be separate from those forming along the cold front, but they may later become part of the same expanding system.

That separation is important because residents could experience two periods of severe weather: scattered afternoon storms followed by a much larger line later in the evening or overnight.

Outdoor events, travel, and sports across the region could therefore face changing conditions long before the main storm complex arrives.

Storms May Merge Into a Dangerous Wind Complex

The setup becomes more serious Saturday evening as a surface low deepens over upstate New York and forces the cold front southeastward.

Hall said the advancing front may catch up with the thunderstorms already developing near the Blue Ridge, combining them into one large and powerful complex.

Once that happens, damaging straight-line winds could become the greatest danger.

Forecast gusts of 60 to 75 mph would be strong enough to knock down large tree limbs, damage roofs, block roads, and leave thousands of homes without electricity.

The storm line may accelerate southeastward after dark, potentially reaching Baltimore, Washington, D.C., Philadelphia, and other parts of the Interstate 95 corridor during the nighttime hours.

Hall said people along the I-95 corridor could first see scattered damaging storms during the afternoon before the main line arrives several hours later.

Nighttime wind events are especially concerning because many people may be asleep or away from television when warnings are issued.

A severe thunderstorm warning involving 70 mph winds deserves the same immediate attention as any other dangerous weather alert, even when no tornado is present.

Straight-line winds at that speed can cause damage across a much larger area than many tornadoes, particularly in tree-covered neighborhoods and older communities with overhead power lines.

Hall Says a Derecho Cannot Be Ruled Out

Some viewers compared the developing setup to the June 29, 2012, derecho, a destructive windstorm that crossed a large section of the Midwest and Mid-Atlantic.

Hall said he was not predicting a repeat of that historic event, but acknowledged that there were some similarities in the overall pattern.

A derecho, which is a long-lived and widespread complex of damaging thunderstorms, remained possible in his view, though it was too early to know whether the storm would meet the required size and duration.

“I think a derecho is on the table,” Hall said, while stressing that summer storm systems can be difficult to forecast precisely until they begin developing.

The label matters less than the impacts.

A fast-moving line capable of sending winds near or above 70 mph through major cities after dark would be dangerous regardless of whether meteorologists eventually classify it as a derecho.

Comparisons with past disasters can help people understand the potential, but they can also create unnecessary certainty. The more useful message is that Saturday’s setup has enough ingredients to produce a broad wind event, and residents should have a reliable way to receive warnings overnight.

Flash Flooding Is Another Serious Concern

The storms will also draw from a deep supply of tropical moisture, raising the risk of localized flash flooding from the upper Ohio Valley into Pennsylvania and upstate New York.

Pittsburgh, State College, and Binghamton were included in a marginal risk for excessive rainfall in Hall’s forecast.

Thunderstorms may release intense rain over the steep terrain of the Appalachians, where water can rush quickly into creeks, valleys, and low-lying roads.

Hall said one or two inches of rainfall in roughly 30 minutes can turn a dry creek bed into a dangerous torrent in some mountain communities.

The exact corridor of heaviest rainfall remained uncertain, but he said the flood risk could be upgraded as confidence improves.

Residents living near streams or in flood-prone valleys should closely monitor rising water Saturday evening and avoid assuming that a road remains safe because it was passable earlier in the day.

The combination of heavy rain, darkness, downed trees, and power outages could make travel especially difficult once the main line arrives.

Severe Weather Moves Into the Carolinas Sunday

The cold front will continue moving south on Sunday, shifting the severe weather threat into the Carolinas.

About 10 million people, including those in Charlotte, Raleigh, and Columbia, were already included in an extended severe weather risk.

The leftover boundary will encounter another unstable and humid air mass, allowing scattered clusters of thunderstorms to form.

Damaging winds will again be the primary concern, with storms capable of bringing down trees and power poles or blocking roads.

Hall pushed back on the idea that midsummer is too late for significant severe weather in the region.

He pointed to an EF3 tornado near Rocky Mount, North Carolina, on July 19, 2023, which injured 16 people, as evidence that serious tornadoes and destructive thunderstorms can occur during the heart of summer.

Sunday’s threat does not currently appear as widespread as Saturday’s, but it may still produce dangerous local impacts.

People across the Carolinas should not treat the weekend threat as finished simply because the first major line has moved away from the Ohio Valley and Mid-Atlantic.

Friday Brings Separate Threats to the North

Before the main weekend system develops, isolated severe storms are possible Friday across parts of the Upper Midwest and northern Rockies.

Western Montana and northern Idaho may see storms producing winds near 60 mph and hail.

Another disturbance will move from Minnesota toward Michigan, where stronger low-level winds near the Great Lakes could support an isolated tornado near the meeting point of a cold front and warm front.

Hall described both areas as marginal risks, meaning severe weather should remain isolated rather than widespread.

Still, he advised people attending outdoor events in Michigan to remain weather-aware because sudden gusts could overturn tents and unsecured equipment.

A lower risk category should not be interpreted as no risk. Even one severe storm can cause serious damage if it passes through a campground, festival, marina, or densely populated neighborhood.

Texas Flooding Shifts West but Remains Dangerous

The heaviest rainfall in Texas is expected to shift west toward the Big Bend region Friday after days of catastrophic flooding farther east.

Some locations in the Texas Hill Country had already received between 10 and 30 inches of rain, leaving the ground unable to absorb much additional water.

Hall said even half an inch in an hour could trigger immediate flash flooding in the hardest-hit areas.

Travelers, campers, and residents in western Texas should stay alert for sudden runoff, especially near normally dry channels that can fill rapidly.

The earlier event also forced some communities to deal with tornado and flash flood warnings at the same time.

Hall advised people facing both hazards to move to the highest interior room on the lowest safe floor of a sturdy building, placing walls between themselves and the tornado while staying above any level that floodwater could reach.

He warned against sheltering in a basement during active flooding and said people should not attempt to escape by driving once water is rising.

Cooler Air Arrives With New Problems

The heat dome that brought temperatures near 100 degrees to the northern Plains will weaken over the weekend, bringing relief to some northern states.

Dangerous heat will remain across the South and Southeast, however, and could continue into next week.

The same winds bringing cooler air south may also carry another plume of Canadian wildfire smoke into the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic.

People with asthma or other breathing problems may need to monitor local air-quality readings, particularly as heat, humidity, smoke, and thunderstorms overlap.

By Sunday and Monday, a stalled boundary across the Southeast may trap tropical moisture over Florida, Georgia, and the Carolinas.

Heavy rain and localized flash flooding could develop, and Hall said there was also a small possibility that the disturbance could acquire some tropical characteristics.

He did not expect a major tropical system based on the available guidance, but the setup bears watching because a weak or unnamed disturbance can still produce significant rainfall.

A Weekend That Requires More Than One Plan

Saturday remains the central concern, with a growing risk of severe weather from Indianapolis and Columbus through Pennsylvania, Maryland, and Washington, D.C.

The storm may begin with isolated hail-producing cells, add scattered Blue Ridge thunderstorms, and then merge into a much larger wind complex that races east after dark.

Sunday will shift the threat into the Carolinas, while smaller storms affect parts of the Upper Midwest and northern Rockies on Friday.

Flooding concerns will continue from Texas into the Appalachians and Southeast, and smoke may complicate air quality across the Northeast.

This is not a weekend in which one forecast check on Friday morning will be enough.

The precise storm track, intensity, and timing will depend on cloud cover and early rainfall, but Hall’s confidence in a meaningful severe weather event was increasing.

“Something very big” does appear to be taking shape, not because every location will see a tornado or destructive storm, but because a powerful system may cross a region occupied by tens of millions of people during the evening and overnight hours.

The most important step is to know where to shelter, keep phones charged, secure loose outdoor objects, and make sure warnings can wake the household after dark.

The final classification of the storm can come later. For people in its path, the wind, hail, flooding, and timing are what will matter.
