Meteorologist Warns Millions Aren't Ready For This Storm...

A rare coastal storm is expected to bring several inches of rain and a growing flash-flood threat to parts of the Northeast this week, while a second system developing farther west could produce a much broader severe-weather setup across the Plains, Midwest, and Ohio Valley by Thursday and Friday.

Meteorologist Max Schuster, host of the YouTube channel Max Velocity – Severe Weather Center, said the pattern will remain unusually active through the end of July, with one storm organizing along the East Coast and another strengthening as it moves out of the Rockies.

Schuster’s main concern is that the two systems will create very different hazards almost back to back: flooding and strong coastal winds in the Northeast, followed by a renewed risk of damaging winds, hail, and possibly tornadoes across a large part of the central United States.

Wednesday Brings Flooding Concerns and Scattered Severe Storms

Schuster said Wednesday should be less active from a severe-weather standpoint than the days surrounding it, but there will still be two areas worth watching closely.

One is the Southeast, where a slight risk of severe weather includes parts of Florida and Georgia. The main concern will be isolated damaging wind gusts, with some large hail possible as storms develop later in the afternoon and evening.

The greatest concentration of storms is expected near the Florida-Georgia border, where Schuster said damaging winds could become somewhat more significant at times.

Farther north, the more unusual story will be the coastal low developing near New England.

Schuster said the system could produce several inches of rain across parts of southern New England, including areas around Hartford, Providence, Boston, Worcester, and Nantucket.

Some pockets could receive more than three or four inches, enough to create a meaningful flash-flood threat if the heaviest rain repeatedly falls over the same locations.

That concern is especially important because the system is expected to organize very close to the coast, where urban areas and densely traveled roads can become vulnerable quickly once rainfall rates increase.

A Rare Coastal Low Could Strengthen Into Thursday

Schuster described the developing East Coast storm as unusual for late July, because it will resemble a coastal low more commonly associated with colder seasons even though it is not expected to be tropical.

As the upper-level trough moves offshore, the system is forecast to spin up near the coast and linger long enough to bring heavy rain and gusty winds into parts of New England.

Schuster said the storm may intensify further into Thursday, with stronger wind gusts possible around Cape Cod and Nantucket as the low continues rotating just offshore.

The exact placement of the center will matter because even a modest shift could change where the heaviest rain falls.

Still, Schuster’s broader message was that people from the New York City area into southern New England should be prepared for periods of heavy rain and the possibility of flooded roads.

He also repeated the standard warning not to drive through standing water, noting that drivers continue to become stranded in floodwaters despite how dangerous those situations can become.

The system may not look like a major hurricane or classic winter nor’easter, but the impacts could still be disruptive if several inches of rain fall in a short period.

Thursday Brings a New Severe-Weather Threat to the Plains

While the coastal storm affects the Northeast, Schuster said another disturbance will move across the Rockies on Thursday and begin setting the stage for a more significant severe-weather episode across the central and northern Plains.

He is watching a broad corridor from South Dakota into Kansas, with the risk extending east toward Minnesota and Wisconsin.

Some forecast models show clusters of thunderstorms developing from around Fargo, North Dakota, south toward North Platte, Nebraska, during the afternoon.

Damaging winds appear to be the main threat initially, although large hail and a few tornadoes could also develop if individual storms remain more isolated.

Schuster said the tornado potential will depend heavily on storm mode.

If storms quickly merge into clusters, the risk may lean more toward damaging winds. If they remain discrete for longer, a localized stronger tornado threat could develop in parts of Minnesota, Iowa, Nebraska, or South Dakota.

That uncertainty is important because the difference between a messy cluster of thunderstorms and a handful of organized supercells can completely change the character of a severe-weather day.

Friday Could Have the Highest Severe-Weather Ceiling

Schuster said Friday currently appears more concerning than Thursday, because the storm system is expected to strengthen as it moves into the Midwest and mid-Mississippi Valley.

Forecast guidance shows a deep low-pressure system developing near Iowa and Missouri, with stronger wind shear spreading into Illinois and surrounding states.

That setup, Schuster said, could support a much more organized severe-weather event if instability and storm development line up correctly.

He described the pattern as having the look of a classic late-July severe-weather setup, with strong southerly and southwesterly flow feeding moisture into the region.

Illinois and Missouri are two of the areas Schuster is watching closely, with the broader threat potentially extending toward Chicago, St. Louis, and other parts of the Midwest.

He also raised the possibility of a significant tornado day, although he was careful to say that several ingredients still need to come together before confidence can increase.

That caution is warranted. A favorable wind profile alone does not guarantee a major outbreak, and smaller details such as morning storms, cloud cover, instability, and the exact track of the low could either increase or suppress the risk.

Severe Weather May Continue Into the Weekend

The same storm is expected to move into the Tennessee Valley on Saturday, where additional severe thunderstorms could develop.

Schuster said the overall threat may become more isolated than Friday, with a lower chance of a major tornado event.

By Sunday, parts of the East Coast and Southeast could see another round of scattered severe weather as the system weakens.

At the same time, Schuster is watching the northern Plains for another possible disturbance that could eventually move into the Midwest by Monday.

The first few days of August may still bring some scattered severe-weather opportunities across the northern Plains and Midwest, but Schuster said the risk of a more significant event appears lower for now.

The repeated systems are notable because there is not much time between them. Instead of one storm clearing the country and leaving a long quiet period, the pattern keeps reloading with new disturbances moving through different regions.

Cooler Air Arrives for Parts of the Midwest

There is at least some relief in the forecast for areas that have been dealing with dangerous heat.

Schuster said cooler and drier air will filter into parts of the Midwest and Ohio Valley on Wednesday, bringing a noticeable drop in heat and humidity.

He pointed out that St. Louis had recently experienced a feel-like temperature of 124 degrees, but said conditions should improve considerably as cooler air moves south.

The relief will not be nationwide.

Oklahoma, parts of the northern Plains, and much of the Gulf Coast will remain very hot, with some areas still experiencing feel-like temperatures above 100 degrees.

Jacksonville and Tallahassee could approach a heat index near 110 on Wednesday.

Schuster expects Thursday morning to feel much more comfortable across parts of the Ohio Valley and Northeast, although the break may be temporary because heat and moisture are expected to return ahead of Friday’s storm system.

That return of humidity could become an important ingredient in the severe-weather setup, since warmer, more moisture-rich air can help storms become stronger if the other atmospheric ingredients are in place.

Schuster’s forecast is less about one single storm dominating the week and more about a chain of weather systems arriving in quick succession.

Wednesday brings a mixture of coastal flooding concerns in the Northeast and scattered severe storms in the Southeast, followed by a stronger Plains system Thursday and a potentially more serious Midwest event Friday.

The weekend then keeps at least some severe-weather risk in the forecast as the storm shifts east.

For millions of people, that means the most important thing will be staying aware of changing conditions rather than focusing on one specific day.

The coastal low could create flooding problems before the central U.S. severe-weather threat even reaches its peak, while Friday’s setup could become much more serious if the stronger model solutions continue to hold.

Schuster said there is still meaningful uncertainty in the details, especially for Thursday and Friday, but the overall pattern is active enough that residents across several regions should keep checking updated forecasts as the week progresses.
