A major weather pattern change is beginning to take shape across the United States, bringing a combination of dangerous heat, wildfire smoke, flash flooding, and several possible rounds of severe thunderstorms from the Great Plains through the Midwest, Ohio Valley, and Northeast.
Meteorologist Max Schuster, host of Max Velocity – Severe Weather Center, said the northern half of the country may enter a much more active stretch from Friday through early next week as disturbances move around the edge of a growing heat dome centered farther south and west.
The exact location and strength of each storm round remain uncertain, especially several days in advance, but Schuster said the developing setup could support damaging winds, large hail, and a few tornadoes while the central Plains endure temperatures that may reach dangerous levels.
Thursday Brings Rain and Isolated Severe Storms
The first part of the shift will remain relatively disorganized, with showers and thunderstorms extending from central Kansas through parts of the Midwest and into Michigan.
Schuster said much of the activity should be ordinary rain, although isolated severe storms may develop in parts of the Northeast, including Pennsylvania, Maryland, Washington, D.C., and the Philadelphia area.

The main concerns in those locations would be downburst winds and isolated hail, while a few stronger storms could also develop in Ohio or Indiana even if the overall threat remains limited.
Nebraska, South Dakota, and Oklahoma may also see isolated wind or hail, but Schuster emphasized that the more serious period is expected to begin later in the week rather than during Thursday’s scattered activity.
The central Plains and Midwest will also continue dealing with heavy rainfall left behind by the slow-moving frontal boundary.
Northern Missouri appeared to be one of the more concerning areas for localized flooding, with several inches of rain possible in spots, while most of the broader corridor from Kansas City toward Chicago could still receive at least a half-inch or more.
Some model guidance suggested isolated totals of five to six inches, though Schuster noted that rainfall projections varied considerably, particularly around Chicago.
That uncertainty does not remove the flood threat, because even a smaller area of repeated thunderstorms could overwhelm low-lying roads and poor-drainage locations.
Severe Weather Becomes More Organized Friday
Friday may mark the beginning of a longer sequence of more organized severe-weather risks across the northern Plains and Upper Midwest.
Schuster said scattered severe thunderstorms could stretch from northern Iowa and southern Minnesota into central and northern Wisconsin as stronger northwesterly winds begin developing above the region.

Damaging winds would likely be the main hazard, although hail could accompany the stronger storms.
The setup will be driven less by one large, clearly defined storm system and more by smaller disturbances moving along the northern edge of the heat dome. That makes the exact timing difficult to determine well in advance, but it also creates the possibility that several separate rounds could form over successive days.
Friday’s storms may therefore serve as the opening stage of a more active pattern rather than a single isolated event.
Residents across Minnesota, Iowa, and Wisconsin should pay attention to later forecasts, especially if storms develop during the afternoon and evening when instability is greater.
Schuster said the GFS model was particularly aggressive in showing multiple thunderstorm lines from Friday through Monday, although model forecasts at that range can change quickly.
Saturday Could Bring the Strongest Threat
Saturday currently appears to offer one of the better chances for a more significant severe-weather episode.
Schuster said Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Michigan could be positioned beneath stronger mid-level winds, creating an environment more supportive of damaging winds, large hail, and perhaps a couple of tornadoes.
The GFS model was especially bullish on this possibility, showing a stronger disturbance moving through the Upper Midwest while warm, humid air remained in place ahead of it.
If storms organize into one or more lines, damaging wind could become the most widespread concern. More isolated storms that form ahead of a line could carry a greater hail or tornado risk, depending on how much instability and wind shear are available.
Schuster cautioned that August severe-weather outbreaks are less common than those seen earlier in the warm season, but the developing northwest-flow pattern can still produce substantial storms.
This type of setup can also be deceptive because the atmosphere may appear quiet for much of the day before storms rapidly intensify and move southeast.
The biggest concern is not necessarily one historic outbreak, but a prolonged stretch in which new storms repeatedly form across the same broad region.
Sunday and Monday May Bring More Rounds
The forecast becomes less certain by Sunday, but Schuster said severe weather may redevelop across parts of the central Plains, Midwest, Great Lakes, and Ohio Valley.

One model scenario places a low-pressure system near Nebraska, which would shift the strongest risk toward Iowa and Nebraska before storms move farther east.
Another round could follow Monday across Wisconsin, Michigan, Illinois, and nearby portions of the Great Lakes and Ohio Valley.
Schuster pointed to a compact area of strong mid-level winds forecast near Wisconsin and Michigan on Monday, saying that any storms developing in that environment could become significant.
The continued northwest flow may then carry additional disturbances into the Northeast during the early or middle part of next week.
Because these systems are relatively small and fast-moving, the location of the greatest risk could shift considerably from one forecast cycle to the next.
Even so, the broader message is becoming clearer: the northern United States may face several active days rather than a single storm passing through and ending the threat.
Extreme Heat Builds Across the Plains
While severe storms move along the northern edge of the pattern, a strong ridge of high pressure will expand across the southern and central Plains.
Schuster said central Kansas could approach 105 degrees by Friday, with even more extreme temperatures possible through the weekend.
Model guidance suggested that parts of Nebraska, including areas near Kearney, could approach 115 degrees on Saturday.

That figure represented a possible actual air temperature rather than a heat-index value, although forecasts that extreme several days out should still be treated cautiously.
Even if temperatures fall short of the highest model projection, the combination of heat and humidity could become dangerous for anyone working or exercising outdoors.
The heat will remain trapped across the central Plains as cooler fronts periodically move through the Midwest and East, creating a sharp contrast across a relatively short distance.
That boundary between intense heat and cooler northern air will also help focus the repeated storm threat.
Schuster suggested limiting outdoor activity where the heat becomes most intense, although he linked that advice partly to respiratory concerns. More broadly, people should also watch for signs of heat exhaustion, stay hydrated, and avoid leaving children or pets inside vehicles.
The heat dome is expected to remain a major feature through at least the middle of August across parts of the Plains and West.
Cooler Air May Return Behind the Storms
The same pattern producing severe weather may also bring periods of unusually comfortable temperatures to the Midwest and Great Lakes.
A cold front is expected to move through late Saturday into Sunday, lowering temperatures across parts of the region while the worst heat remains farther west and south.
If northwest flow continues through next week, cooler conditions could persist from the northern Plains through the Midwest and into the Northeast.

Schuster said that could create a pleasant stretch for outdoor activity, aside from the recurring thunderstorm risks.
This contrast is one of the defining features of the pattern. Communities in the central Plains may face dangerous triple-digit heat, while areas only a few hundred miles away experience cooler-than-normal conditions behind repeated fronts.
The temperature relief may be welcome, but it will arrive through a weather pattern capable of producing strong winds, hail, flooding, and occasional tornadoes.
Wildfire Smoke Continues Spreading East
Wildfires remain active across Washington, Oregon, and Idaho, where Schuster said thick smoke and poor air quality were still creating dangerous conditions near the surface.
Fire weather conditions were not expected to be as favorable for rapid new growth as they had been several days earlier, but the existing fires were unlikely to calm quickly.
Smoke will continue spreading east of the Rockies, producing hazy skies across parts of the Midwest and Ohio Valley.

For many communities farther east, much of the smoke may remain elevated above the ground, creating colorful sunsets without the same severe air-quality impact seen closer to the fires.
Near-surface smoke remains a greater concern in the Pacific Northwest, where people with asthma or other respiratory conditions may need to reduce outdoor exposure.
The smoke adds another layer to an already complex forecast, particularly in areas also facing heat or thunderstorms.
Although smoke can sometimes limit daytime heating slightly, it should not be expected to prevent dangerous temperatures or eliminate the severe-weather threat.
A Prolonged Active Pattern Takes Shape
Schuster’s forecast points to a week in which several hazards overlap rather than one dominant storm controlling the entire country.
Thursday will bring additional rain and scattered severe storms, while Friday may begin a more organized period across the Upper Midwest.
Saturday could produce the strongest severe-weather risk in Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Michigan, followed by additional rounds Sunday and Monday across the Plains, Midwest, Great Lakes, and Ohio Valley.
At the same time, dangerous heat will build across Kansas, Nebraska, and surrounding areas, while wildfire smoke continues affecting the Pacific Northwest and spreading haze farther east.
The greatest uncertainty concerns the exact placement of each thunderstorm corridor, but the overall setup appears increasingly favorable for repeated disturbances moving along the edge of the heat dome.
That makes regular forecast updates especially important, because a location outside the main risk area one day could move into a more concerning zone as the next disturbance becomes clearer.
Schuster described the coming period as a major shift after a relatively quiet stretch, with several opportunities for severe weather continuing into the middle of next week.
The pattern may bring welcome cooler air to some northern states, but that relief will come with enough wind, rain, hail, and heat nearby that residents across a large part of the country should remain weather-aware through the weekend and beyond.
