Meteorologist Warns, Here We Go, Because a Highly Unusual Storm Pattern Is Coming…

A highly unusual July weather pattern is beginning to take shape across the United States, and meteorologist Max Schuster says the quietest part of the forecast may be ending just as a much more active stretch begins.

In a forecast published by the Max Velocity – Severe Weather Center, Schuster warned that the atmosphere is preparing for a major shift later this week, with a developing storm system capable of bringing severe weather from the Northern Plains into the Midwest, Ohio Valley, Mid-Atlantic, and parts of the Northeast.

The first few days of the week may not look especially dramatic in most areas, but Schuster said the larger concern arrives from Thursday through Saturday, when stronger low-level winds and a powerful jet stream could support repeated rounds of damaging thunderstorms.

“This weather pattern will be one of the strangest weather patterns that we’ve had in July in quite some time,” he said.

Monday Starts With Scattered Storms

The severe weather threat on Monday is expected to remain fairly limited, although strong thunderstorms may still develop across parts of the Southern Plains, Southeast, and Desert Southwest.

Schuster said a weak low-pressure system centered near Nashville and northern Alabama will help produce thunderstorms across Georgia, South Carolina, and northern Florida. Downburst winds will be the main danger, particularly in storms that collapse quickly and push strong gusts toward the ground.

Texas and Oklahoma may also see another round of thunderstorms, even if those areas are not immediately placed under a broad severe weather risk. Schuster said some storms could produce damaging wind gusts and small hail roughly the size of coins.

Arizona will remain active as well, with monsoon thunderstorms moving from east to west during the afternoon and evening. Isolated damaging winds, heavy rain, and frequent lightning will all be possible.

Although Monday appears calmer than what may develop later in the week, it should not be mistaken for a completely quiet day. Summer storms do not always need a high-level outlook to become dangerous, especially when strong winds develop suddenly over populated areas or along busy highways.

New England Faces a Tuesday Wind Threat

The severe weather focus is expected to shift toward northern New England on Tuesday, which Schuster described as an unusual location for one of the week’s more organized threats.

A passing low-pressure system over Canada will send strong northwesterly winds across Maine, New Hampshire, and Vermont. A slight risk of severe weather is already in place for far northern New England, while a marginal threat extends toward Portsmouth, New Hampshire.

Schuster said the main concern will be damaging winds during the afternoon and evening, as thunderstorms move through an environment with strong flow aloft.

Residents across northern New England are being urged to remain alert, particularly because severe weather in that region can sometimes arrive with less public attention than outbreaks in the Plains or Midwest. Trees, power lines, and roads surrounded by heavy forest can make even a relatively brief wind event disruptive.

A separate marginal severe weather threat is also possible in the Pacific Northwest, although the New England setup appears to be the more notable concern Tuesday.

A Northern Plains System Develops Midweek

By Wednesday, a new low-pressure system is forecast to begin developing over the far Northern Plains, marking the start of the pattern Schuster is watching most closely.

Both the GFS and European forecast models show the system forming, but they remain less certain about whether thunderstorms will actually be able to develop immediately. Schuster said the atmosphere may be capped, meaning warmer air above the surface could prevent storms from rising freely.

That cap may hold much of Wednesday’s threat in check, but it also adds uncertainty. If storms break through it, they could enter an environment capable of supporting rotation.

Schuster said severe weather does not appear especially widespread on Wednesday based on current model guidance, although the developing low and changing wind fields will need to be monitored carefully.

This is one of the more fascinating parts of the forecast because a capped atmosphere can create two very different outcomes. It may suppress storms almost completely, or it may allow heat and instability to build until a small number of powerful thunderstorms finally develop.

Thursday And Friday Bring The Greatest Concern

The more substantial severe weather threat may begin Thursday afternoon and evening across Minnesota, eastern South Dakota, Wisconsin, and nearby parts of the Upper Midwest.

Schuster said low-level winds are expected to strengthen as the storm system organizes, creating conditions that could support a return of severe thunderstorms after several quieter days.

The exact timing of the low-pressure system remains the largest question. A faster or slower track could shift the strongest storms by several hundred miles, changing which states face the highest risk.

By Friday, the severe weather threat may move into Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Ohio, and the broader Ohio Valley. Schuster said damaging winds could become significant, while a tornado threat may also develop if storms remain organized and surface conditions are favorable.

Parts of Wisconsin, Iowa, and Illinois may need to be watched particularly closely as the system moves through the Midwest.

“If any storms are able to form on Wednesday, Thursday, or Friday, there could be an elevated tornado threat here across parts of the Midwest,” Schuster said.

The potential for several states to experience severe weather on consecutive days is what makes this pattern more serious than a single isolated storm event. Even if no one day becomes a major outbreak, repeated wind damage, power outages, and flooding can create a much larger regional impact.

The Threat May Reach The East Coast

Forecast guidance currently shows the storm system continuing eastward into Saturday, when severe weather may spread into the Mid-Atlantic and interior Northeast.

Schuster said strong low-level winds could create a major damaging wind threat across the Washington, D.C. area, Virginia, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, and surrounding states.

Storms may also extend farther west and south into Tennessee, Kentucky, and Missouri, depending on the final track and speed of the system.

The GFS model currently favors Friday for the strongest Midwest and Ohio Valley threat, followed by a Saturday risk across the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic. However, Schuster repeatedly stressed that the timing remains uncertain and will determine where the most dangerous weather ultimately develops.

He also warned that the return of active weather may not be brief. The pattern could remain stormy through much of the second half of July, with additional systems following after the upcoming weekend.

“Here we go,” Schuster said as he described the atmosphere becoming active again. “Things are about to get really active again really quickly.”

Flooding And A Sharp Temperature Change

While severe weather will receive much of the attention, heavy rain may become another important concern across the Southern Plains and Southeast.

Schuster expects a widespread half-inch to one inch of rain from parts of West Texas toward the Carolinas, with localized areas possibly receiving five to seven inches.

The highest totals will depend on where thunderstorms repeatedly travel over the same locations. Because the broader storm system is moving slowly, some communities may experience several rounds of heavy rain before conditions finally improve.

Flooding will be most likely in low-lying areas, poor-drainage locations, and places that receive multiple thunderstorms in a short period.

Temperatures will also change sharply during the week. Heat is expected to build across the Northern Plains during the early and middle portions of the week, while some East Coast cities, including New York City, Charleston, and Miami, may briefly turn hotter by Wednesday or Thursday.

However, Schuster said the heat should be more localized than the major heat wave that affected the country around the Fourth of July.

By Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, cooler Canadian air is expected to push into the Midwest, Great Lakes, and Northeast, suppressing the heat and lowering temperatures considerably.

Some areas may wake up to readings in the upper 40s or low 50s by the end of the weekend, which would be unusually cool for the middle of July and a sharp contrast to the brutal heat affecting other parts of the country.

The combination of severe storms, unusually strong winds aloft, heavy rain, brief heat, and a sudden cooldown is what gives this forecast its unusual character. It is not simply one storm moving across the country, but a broader rearrangement of the summer weather pattern.

Schuster cautioned that important details will change as newer model runs arrive, particularly concerning the timing and location of the strongest storms. Even so, the overall signal is becoming harder to ignore: severe weather is preparing to return, and several regions may face an active and disruptive second half of the week.
