A dangerous weather pattern is expected to unfold across several parts of the United States beginning Thursday, with life-threatening flooding continuing in Texas before a new round of severe thunderstorms spreads from the Great Lakes toward the Northeast and East Coast over the weekend.

Meteorologist Max Schuster, host of the Max Velocity – Severe Weather Center, warned that repeated rainfall over already saturated ground could produce catastrophic flooding west of San Antonio, while a major shift in the jet stream may create several opportunities for damaging winds and other severe weather from Friday night into early next week.

The same pattern will also produce major temperature swings, including extreme heat across the Northern Plains and parts of the Southeast before unusually cool air reaches the Midwest.

Schuster described the second half of July as likely to become far more active than the first, with the atmosphere entering a setup that could repeatedly send storms across the northern half of the country.

Texas Flooding Threat Continues Thursday

The most immediate concern remains across central and southwest Texas, where some communities have already received more than a foot of rain and additional downpours are expected through Thursday.

Schuster said the greatest danger will remain around Del Rio, Uvalde, Rocksprings, Sonora, Junction, Kerrville, Crystal City, and areas west of San Antonio.

A small low-pressure system near western Texas is pulling a steady stream of moisture northward from the Gulf of Mexico, allowing heavy rain to repeatedly develop over the same general corridor.

Although the heaviest rainfall may shift somewhat west of San Antonio, scattered thunderstorms are expected to continue across much of central Texas through the afternoon.

Some of the strongest bands could produce rainfall rates between half an inch and 1½ inches per hour, with locally higher amounts possible where storms remain nearly stationary.

That becomes especially dangerous after days of rain because creeks, drainage systems, and low-water crossings may already be near capacity.

Even a brief burst of heavy rain can create serious flooding when the soil can no longer absorb much additional water.

Small Shifts Could Determine Who Sees the Worst Rain

Schuster emphasized that the precise location of the heaviest rainfall remains difficult to predict because a movement of only five or 10 miles could separate an area receiving one or two inches from another receiving more than a foot.

One model placed the most extreme totals near Sonora, where as much as 20 inches could fall over the broader event, while other projections showed eight to 10 inches closer to San Antonio and around a foot near Uvalde.

A blended National Weather Service forecast produced more widespread totals between two and five inches, but Schuster noted that averages often hide the localized maximum amounts that occur beneath persistent rain bands.

He expects at least a few communities to receive around 12 inches during the most active part of the event.

That uncertainty should not be interpreted as evidence that the threat is exaggerated. It means residents across a larger area must remain prepared because the most dangerous corridor may not become clear until storms are already developing.

Forecast maps can make rainfall look neatly contained, but real storms do not follow county lines, and a slight movement in a stalled boundary can place a different town under hours of repeated downpours.

Rain Slowly Winds Down Friday

The flooding pattern is expected to continue into Friday, although Schuster said the rain should become less intense and shift farther west.

Any additional rainfall will still create problems because it will fall over locations that may have already experienced several days of flooding.

Friday could therefore feel quieter without being entirely safe.

Water may continue rising after the heaviest rain ends, while damaged roads, weakened bridges, fast-moving streams, and saturated hillsides can remain dangerous well into the recovery period.

Schuster said the region may receive at least a temporary break during the weekend, though rain could return later in the weekend or during the following week.

For residents in flood-prone areas, the safest response is to continue monitoring warnings rather than assuming conditions are improving simply because rainfall briefly becomes lighter.

The greatest risk in prolonged flood events often comes when people become used to the rain and begin underestimating how much water has already collected.

Severe Storms Develop Near the Great Lakes

While Texas deals with flooding, the larger national weather pattern will begin changing late Friday as stronger northwesterly winds move out of Canada and interact with hot, humid air over the Midwest.

Schuster said thunderstorms may first organize across Wisconsin, Michigan, and the upper Midwest before moving southeast during the night.

A cluster or line of storms could produce significant wind damage from Michigan toward Ohio and Pennsylvania between Friday night and Saturday morning.

The exact strength of the storms remains uncertain because higher-resolution forecast models are not yet fully available for that period, but Schuster said a developing low-pressure system should produce at least some organized thunderstorm activity.

Damaging straight-line winds may become the primary concern if storms merge into a fast-moving line.

These systems can knock down trees and power lines across several states, sometimes producing widespread damage even without a major tornado outbreak.

People across the Great Lakes should prepare for the possibility that storms may arrive overnight, when warnings are easier to miss and falling trees become particularly dangerous for anyone sleeping upstairs.

Saturday Could Become the Most Significant Severe Weather Day

Schuster identified Saturday as the day to watch most closely for a potentially significant severe weather event.

The broad risk area may extend from Indiana through Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, and portions of New England, although the precise corridor and severity remain uncertain.

Strong westerly and northwesterly winds higher in the atmosphere could help thunderstorms organize as they move east.

Depending on how much instability develops and where the low-pressure system tracks, the setup could support damaging winds, hail, and an isolated tornado threat.

Schuster stopped short of predicting a major outbreak, but he said Saturday currently appears to offer the strongest severe weather potential within the next several days.

That measured wording is important because long-range severe weather forecasts often change as cloud cover, morning storms, and frontal timing become clearer.

A day that looks highly threatening several days in advance can weaken, while a more modest setup can intensify if the atmosphere recovers quickly.

Residents from the Midwest into the Northeast should therefore keep checking the forecast rather than focusing on a single early outlook.

Storm Pattern May Continue Into Next Week

The weekend system is expected to move toward the Atlantic and affect Nova Scotia by Sunday, while scattered storms may redevelop over the Midwest Sunday night or Monday.

Schuster said confidence is lower for those later rounds, but the overall jet-stream pattern supports continued opportunities for organized storms.

A large dip in the jet stream will remain in place from the Pacific Northwest toward the East Coast, bringing strong upper-level winds across a wide section of the country.

That creates an environment in which multiple disturbances can travel along the same path during the third week of July.

Schuster said significant severe weather can still occur during midsummer, even though public attention often begins shifting toward hurricanes and extreme heat.

This year has not produced many widespread severe weather outbreaks during the early part of July, but he believes that quieter period may soon end.

Several separate storm systems could emerge through the middle and latter portions of next week, although it is too early to identify specific cities or hazards with confidence.

Extreme Heat Peaks Before a Major Cooldown

Before cooler air arrives, dangerous heat will intensify across the Northern Plains and parts of the Southeast.

Thursday will bring temperatures into the middle 100s across portions of the Dakotas, with Bismarck near 104 degrees, Sioux Falls close to 99, and Minneapolis approaching the upper 90s.

Charlotte, Raleigh, Virginia Beach, and other parts of North Carolina and Virginia may also approach 100 degrees.

Friday could become the hottest day of the week in several locations, with parts of South Dakota potentially reaching between 109 and 110 degrees and some areas of North Carolina nearing 105.

The combination of extreme heat and humidity can become dangerous quickly, especially for people working outdoors, older adults, young children, and anyone without reliable air conditioning.

Saturday will bring some relief to Wisconsin and Michigan as cooler air begins moving south, but heat may surge again across Nebraska, Kansas, and South Dakota by Sunday, where highs could range from 105 to 113 degrees.

The weather will then reverse sharply.

By Monday through Wednesday, a strong push of cooler Canadian air is expected to spread across the Midwest, with morning temperatures falling into the 50s and 60s from Fargo and Minneapolis toward Chicago.

That will offer a rare midsummer break and may allow some residents to open windows instead of relying continuously on air conditioning.

The relief may not last, however, because intense heat is expected to rebuild across Texas and Oklahoma during the middle or latter part of next week.

A More Active Second Half of July

Schuster’s forecast presents a weather pattern defined by rapid changes rather than one single storm.

Texas will remain focused on flooding through Thursday and Friday, the Great Lakes may face severe storms beginning Friday night, and the threat could expand toward the Northeast on Saturday before additional disturbances become possible next week.

At the same time, parts of the country will move from extreme heat to unusually cool mornings within only a few days.

That kind of pattern can become difficult for the public to follow because each region faces a different hazard, sometimes in quick succession.

The most serious immediate danger remains flooding in Texas, where additional rain could fall over communities that have already absorbed enormous totals.

After that, attention will shift toward the Great Lakes and Northeast as the weekend storm system begins organizing.

Schuster’s warning was not that every location will experience destructive weather, but that the atmosphere is becoming more energetic and less predictable after a relatively quiet opening to July.

For people across the affected regions, the message is straightforward: remain alert, keep warnings enabled, and be ready for forecasts to change quickly as the dangerous storm pattern moves into its next phase.
