A strange and increasingly active weather pattern is developing across the United States, bringing a fading but still serious flood threat in Texas, dangerous wildfire smoke across the Midwest and East, and at least two storm systems capable of producing severe weather and heavy rain through the weekend and into next week.
Meteorologist Max Schuster, host of the Max Velocity – Severe Weather Center, said the first major system will sweep from the Great Lakes through the Ohio Valley and Northeast, where damaging winds may become the main concern on Saturday.
A second storm may then move into the Midwest and Great Lakes from Sunday into early next week, while a separate coastal disturbance near Florida could produce several inches of rain and possibly develop further once it moves over the Atlantic.
Schuster described the pattern as highly changeable, with different regions moving rapidly between flooding, severe thunderstorms, smoke, extreme heat, and an unusual midsummer cooldown.
Texas Flooding Slowly Becomes More Isolated
The immediate flood danger in Texas should begin easing Friday, although scattered showers and thunderstorms may continue over areas that have already received extraordinary rainfall.
Schuster said the greatest threat should gradually move away from the communities hit hardest during the previous several days, but any additional downpour could still cause isolated flash flooding because the ground remains saturated.

Parts of the Texas Hill Country reportedly received between 12 and 24 inches of rain during the event, triggering water rescues near Boerne and other communities.
Storm chaser Tornado Paigey provided footage used in Schuster’s forecast showing rescue operations during a flash flood emergency, while another contributor named Camden sent video of a tornado striking the San Antonio area.
The tornado produced visible power flashes and was supported by a debris signature on radar, Schuster said. No injuries or deaths had been reported at the time of his forecast, though damage was noted near Six Flags on the northern side of San Antonio.
Friday’s rainfall should be less widespread, with the remaining flash flood risk focusing more heavily near San Angelo, Sonora, and western portions of the state.
Even with improving conditions, residents should remain cautious around creeks and low-water crossings. Flood disasters do not end the moment the rain weakens, particularly when rivers and drainage channels continue responding to water that fell many miles upstream.
The desert Southwest will also remain active as monsoon moisture brings thunderstorms to Arizona and New Mexico.
Most locations may receive only a tenth of an inch to around two inches, but isolated areas near Tucson and Phoenix could collect closer to two or three inches, enough to produce sudden flooding in normally dry washes.
First Large Storm Targets the Great Lakes and Northeast
The larger national shift begins Friday night as a stronger disturbance develops near the Great Lakes.
Schuster said thunderstorms may organize across Wisconsin and Michigan before moving toward Ohio, Pennsylvania, and the Northeast during the overnight hours and into Saturday.
A deepening dip in the jet stream will bring strong winds high in the atmosphere over hot and humid air closer to the surface, creating an environment in which storms may merge into one or more damaging lines.
Saturday appears to be the most concerning day in the near-term forecast.

One model showed a broad cluster of thunderstorms forming from southern Canada into Michigan before expanding east and southeast across the Ohio Valley and Northeast.
Schuster said the damaging wind corridor could stretch from Springfield and Peoria, Illinois, toward Burlington, Vermont, with additional impacts possible near Harrisburg, Scranton, and Washington, D.C., later Saturday.
Model guidance showed several pockets of wind gusts between 60 and 70 mph within the storm clusters.
Those wind speeds can bring down mature trees, damage roofs, and produce extended power outages, especially in areas where heavy rain has softened the ground.
The threat may continue into the night, which makes reliable warning alerts especially important. Overnight wind events can become more dangerous because people may be asleep when storms arrive, while darkness makes downed trees, blocked roads, and power lines harder to see.
Schuster said the system should move offshore by Sunday morning, but its departure will not necessarily end the active pattern.
A Second Storm Could Follow Early Next Week
Another storm system may enter the Midwest and Great Lakes between Sunday and Monday, creating a second opportunity for severe weather.
The exact location and strength remain uncertain, but Schuster said the overall upper-level pattern supports additional thunderstorm development as disturbances move along the northern edge of a strong southern ridge.
Tuesday may bring another more organized risk, potentially affecting Minneapolis, Chicago, the Great Lakes, or portions of the East Coast depending on where the storm track sets up.
Forecast models remained divided over the details, so Schuster stopped short of identifying a firm severe weather corridor.
That uncertainty is normal several days in advance, especially when the next system depends partly on how the weekend storms alter moisture, instability, and frontal boundaries.
Still, the broad signal is clear enough to suggest that the third week of July may become much busier than the first half of the month.
High pressure is expected to build near the surface over the Great Lakes by Tuesday night or Wednesday, offering a quieter period for some areas.
Beyond that, the forecast becomes far less certain, with smaller-scale severe weather events possible Thursday through Saturday and additional larger storm systems potentially returning near the end of July.
Rather than one continuous outbreak, the pattern may produce separate rounds with breaks between them. That can be difficult for residents because a calm morning or quiet day may create the impression that the threat has passed when another disturbance is already developing upstream.
Wildfire Smoke Spreads Across Several Regions
A large plume of Canadian wildfire smoke will continue affecting the Midwest, Great Lakes, and Northeast through Friday, with poor air quality possible in several major population centers.

Schuster said strong northwesterly winds carried the smoke into Wisconsin, Michigan, New York, and surrounding states after a new group of fires intensified in Canada.
Viewers sent him photographs from places including Wausau, Detroit, and New York City, with some reporting that respiratory conditions were becoming harder to manage.
The thickest smoke had focused on Michigan’s Upper Peninsula and parts of New York, though conditions may begin improving gradually from west to east.
Wisconsin could see some relief between late Friday and Saturday, while the smoke shifts toward Virginia, North Carolina, and the East Coast.
Charlotte, Raleigh, and surrounding areas may notice hazier skies and reduced air quality as the plume moves south and east.
Upper-level winds should eventually steer more of the smoke toward the Atlantic, but Schuster warned that some haze may linger into the weekend.
Wildfire smoke is more than a visibility problem. Fine particles can aggravate asthma, heart disease, and other respiratory conditions even when the fire itself is hundreds of miles away.
People who are sensitive to poor air quality may need to reduce prolonged outdoor activity and keep indoor air as clean as possible until conditions improve.
Florida Faces Heavy Rain and a Possible Coastal System
Another unusual feature of the pattern is a developing low-pressure area near Florida that may produce heavy rain regardless of whether it becomes a named tropical system.
Schuster said a strong cold front moving out of Canada could reach the Southeast and help form a low near the Florida coastline.
Wind shear is expected to remain strong, making rapid tropical development unlikely during the weekend.
However, the lack of a named storm would not reduce the flood risk.

Jacksonville, Orlando, Tampa, Daytona Beach, Spring Hill, and Cedar Key could all receive periods of heavy rain, with the National Blend of Models showing a broad area of three to five inches from the weekend into early next week.
Much of the heaviest modeled rainfall remains offshore, but a shift toward the coast could bring much larger totals onto land.
Schuster said isolated communities near the coastline could receive as much as 12 inches if the system organizes close enough to shore or repeatedly sends rain bands over the same areas.
Central and northern Florida are more broadly expected to receive around two to five inches, though the exact placement remains highly uncertain.
After moving near Florida, the disturbance may travel northward along the coast.
One possibility is that it remains a disorganized rainmaker. Another is that it develops into a tropical storm or even a hurricane east of the Carolinas sometime next week, though Schuster emphasized that confidence in that outcome remains low.
Heavy rainfall could eventually extend toward Cape Hatteras and Virginia Beach if the system follows the coast.
For now, flooding is the more immediate concern than wind intensity or storm classification.
That distinction matters because people sometimes ignore a system that has no name, even though slow-moving tropical moisture can produce the same dangerous inland flooding as a weaker tropical storm.
Cooler Air Arrives Before Southern Heat Rebuilds
Behind the weekend storm, much cooler air will spread into parts of the Northeast.
Afternoon temperatures in the low 90s on Saturday could fall into the 50s across upstate New York and Vermont by Sunday morning.
A deeper jet-stream dip early next week will push cooler conditions farther into the Midwest and Northeast, bringing a noticeable midsummer break.
At the same time, a strong ridge will strengthen across the Southern Plains.
That high-pressure system is expected to rebuild intense heat across Texas by the end of next week, while Oklahoma and surrounding states may also experience sharply rising temperatures.
The contrast between cooler northern air and building southern heat will help keep the storm track active along the boundary separating the two air masses.
That is one reason Schuster expects additional storm opportunities later in July.
An Unsettled Pattern With Several Separate Threats

Schuster’s forecast does not point to one storm affecting the entire country at once.
Instead, it outlines a series of connected threats: lingering flooding in Texas and the Southwest, smoke across the Midwest and East, a damaging wind event on Saturday, a second possible storm early next week, and a rain-heavy coastal system near Florida.
The first large storm appears most likely to affect the Great Lakes, Ohio Valley, and Northeast through Saturday.
The second may reorganize over the Midwest and Great Lakes from Sunday into Tuesday, while the Florida disturbance develops separately along the southeastern coast.
Each system carries uncertainty, but the broader change in the jet stream suggests a more active second half of July.
The key is not to assume that quieter weather in one region means the national pattern has settled down.
Texas may begin recovering from catastrophic rainfall just as the Great Lakes prepare for damaging winds, and the Northeast may cool sharply while Florida deals with a growing flood threat.
Schuster’s warning is therefore less about one dramatic forecast map than the number of hazards appearing almost simultaneously.
