Meteorologist Warns, A Rare July Storm Is Coming

A rare mid-July storm pattern is expected to bring an unusual combination of severe thunderstorms, sharp temperature swings, and possible tropical development across several parts of the United States, according to meteorologist Max Schuster of the Max Velocity – Severe Weather Center.

Schuster said the first major concern arrives Tuesday across northern New England, where strong wind shear and powerful northwesterly flow could support rotating supercells capable of producing destructive winds, very large hail, and several tornadoes.

Conditions may briefly calm during the middle of the week, but the break is not expected to last. A stronger storm system could then organize over the weekend, spreading severe weather from the Midwest into the Ohio Valley, East Coast, and Northeast while a stalled front in the Gulf raises the possibility of flooding and tropical development.

“A large storm is coming,” Schuster warned.

Northern New England Faces a Rare Severe Weather Setup

Tuesday’s most dangerous weather is expected across Maine, Vermont, New Hampshire, northern New York, and nearby areas of Canada, including Quebec and the Ottawa region.

Schuster described the environment as highly unusual for New England, where the combination of strong wind shear, instability, and rotating storms may create a full range of severe hazards.

A significant damaging wind threat will be possible across northern sections of the region, while hail could grow as large as baseballs in the strongest supercells.

“That is not something you see very often in New England,” Schuster said.

The tornado risk may also be more serious than usual. Schuster said a few strong tornadoes, potentially rated EF2 or greater, could develop during the afternoon and evening, particularly around Burlington, northern Maine, and areas close to the Canadian border.

The threat could extend as far south as Manchester, New Hampshire, and Portland, Maine, although storms moving toward Boston or farther south may weaken as daytime heating fades.

This is a region where many people are less accustomed to major tornado setups than residents of the central Plains. That unfamiliarity makes early warnings especially important, since wooded terrain and hills can hide approaching storms until they are close.

Supercells Could Cross From Canada Into Maine

Storms are expected to begin forming near Quebec during the morning before becoming more organized later in the day.

By around 5 p.m., Schuster said several rotating supercells may be active across parts of southern Quebec and nearby sections of Canada, where forecast tornado parameters appear unusually high.

He described some of the model values near Quebec as “bonkers,” noting that they suggest the atmosphere may have a high ceiling for tornado development.

Those storms could then move into northern and western Maine during the early evening.

Areas near Jackman, Clayton Lake, and Presque Isle may face tornadic supercells between roughly 6 p.m. and 8 p.m. Eastern time, according to Schuster’s timing.

By approximately 9 p.m. to 10 p.m., the storms may continue toward Berlin, New Hampshire, Bangor, Maine, and Portland.

The exact track of individual supercells will matter greatly. A storm that remains isolated may hold its rotation longer, while storms that merge into a larger line could shift the main danger toward widespread damaging winds.

Either outcome would be serious, and Schuster urged people throughout northern New England to remain weather-aware through the evening.

Midweek Lull Before the Pattern Reloads

Wednesday is expected to bring a temporary reduction in major severe weather across much of the country.

A low-pressure system may attempt to develop over the far Northern Plains, but Schuster said the atmosphere may remain capped, limiting thunderstorm formation.

A cap occurs when a layer of warmer air above the surface prevents rising air from developing into storms. That can suppress activity for hours, even when heat and moisture are present below.

Thursday may become somewhat more active, but Schuster said the severe weather potential remains conditional because smaller-scale atmospheric features will determine whether storms can break through the cap.

This uncertainty does not mean the threat has disappeared. In fact, capped environments can sometimes become more dangerous if instability continues building and only a few storms eventually form.

Still, Schuster believes Friday and Saturday currently offer a better chance of organized severe weather than Wednesday or Thursday.

The quieter middle of the week may therefore be less of an ending and more of a pause before the larger storm system arrives.

Weekend Storm Could Target the Midwest

Forecast models increasingly show a powerful system affecting the Midwest beginning Saturday.

Schuster said the European model is particularly supportive of a significant severe weather event across Minnesota, Iowa, and Wisconsin, with all major hazards possible.

Damaging winds may become the leading concern, although tornadoes and large hail will also be on the table.

The system is expected to strengthen as it moves toward the Great Lakes, creating a broad area where storms could organize into lines, clusters, or rotating supercells.

Minneapolis and surrounding parts of Minnesota may be among the areas that need close attention, along with much of Iowa and Wisconsin.

The exact intensity remains uncertain because the event is still several days away, but Schuster said people across the region should take the weekend seriously.

A large wind event can cause damage over a much wider area than isolated tornadoes, bringing down trees and power lines across several states. If tornadoes develop within a fast-moving line, they may also be difficult to see and provide little time for reaction.

By Sunday, the center of the storm system may settle over the Great Lakes, allowing severe weather to spread farther east and south.

Schuster said tornadoes could return as the threat shifts into the Ohio Valley and parts of the Northeast.

The pattern may continue into Monday, when another round of storms could develop along a corridor stretching from Alabama toward New England.

Strong winds appear to be one of the most consistent concerns, but the placement of the highest risk will depend on the system’s exact speed and track.

A slower storm could keep the Midwest threat active longer, while a faster system would bring severe weather to the East Coast sooner.

Schuster emphasized that confidence in the broad pattern is increasing, even though the smaller details remain unclear.

Both weekend days could become significant across the Midwest, Ohio Valley, and Northeast, he said, making it important for residents to review warning methods before storms arrive.

The broader pattern may remain active through the end of July, suggesting that this weekend’s system may not be the final severe weather threat of the month.

Gulf System Could Bring Flooding or Tropical Development

While severe storms move across the northern half of the country, Schuster is also watching a cold front expected to stall over the Gulf of Mexico.

That stalled boundary may help a low-pressure system form near Florida late in the week or during the weekend.

Schuster estimated roughly a 20% to 30% chance that the system could become a tropical depression, and possibly a low-end tropical storm.

Most forecast models do not show a hurricane forming. Only a small number suggest a stronger tropical storm, while the majority keep the system weak and poorly organized.

However, wind strength may not be the greatest concern.

“Regardless of development, this could become a big-time flooding threat,” Schuster said.

Heavy rainfall may affect areas between New Orleans and Tampa, with Florida currently appearing most likely to receive the greatest impact.

A weak tropical system can still cause major problems if it moves slowly or repeatedly pulls deep moisture over the same communities. Flooding does not require hurricane-force winds, and stalled systems can sometimes produce their worst damage through rain alone.

Schuster said the National Hurricane Center is expected to make its own assessment as the system becomes clearer.

The developing storm pattern will also produce major temperature changes.

Heat is expected to intensify Tuesday across the Northern Plains and Midwest, with widespread temperatures in the 80s and 90s.

By Wednesday and Thursday, some areas near Minneapolis and Fargo could approach 100 degrees.

Relief may not arrive until the weekend, when a strong cold front sweeps through the Great Lakes and Upper Midwest.

High temperatures across Wisconsin, Minnesota, and Michigan may then drop into the 70s and 80s by Sunday.

At the same time, heat will be pushed farther south, with Kansas City and St. Louis possibly nearing 100 degrees.

The rapid change from extreme heat to much cooler air is one reason the storm setup could become so active. Strong temperature contrasts often help strengthen low-pressure systems and increase winds at different levels of the atmosphere.

This creates a strange summer pattern in which some communities could move from dangerous heat to severe thunderstorms and then unusually cool weather within only a few days.

Schuster’s forecast remains subject to change, particularly concerning the weekend storm and possible Gulf development. Even so, the overall message is becoming clearer: northern New England faces a rare severe weather threat Tuesday, the Midwest could see a major storm over the weekend, and flooding may become a growing concern along the Gulf Coast.

It is a complicated forecast covering several different hazards, but each one points toward the same conclusion. The relatively quiet period in major severe weather is ending, and a far more active stretch is preparing to begin.
