A rare late-July coastal storm is expected to take shape off the East Coast this week, bringing the potential for damaging winds, severe thunderstorms, and several inches of rain to parts of the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast.
Meteorologist Max Schuster, host of the YouTube channel Max Velocity – Severe Weather Center, said the pattern will first bring severe storms to the East Coast on Tuesday before a non-tropical coastal low develops near New England on Wednesday and lingers into Thursday.
Schuster compared the system to a summer version of a nor’easter, describing its development as highly unusual for July. While it will not be tropical, he said it could still become a serious rain and wind producer for New York City, Long Island, southern New England, and nearby areas.
Severe Weather Shifts East on Tuesday
Schuster said Tuesday’s main severe-weather threat will stretch from the Mid-Atlantic into the Carolinas, with scattered to numerous damaging wind gusts possible from around Philadelphia south toward Knoxville and Charlotte.
The greatest wind concern is expected around Richmond, Raleigh, and Charlotte, while parts of North Carolina and Virginia could also see large to very large hail.
A few tornadoes will be possible as well.

Schuster highlighted Washington, D.C., Norfolk, Richmond, Charlottesville, and Raleigh as areas where an isolated tornado could develop during the afternoon or evening.
He urged residents in the risk area to have more than one way to receive weather warnings because the storms may organize quickly once the low-pressure system begins strengthening.
The setup may also be easier to forecast than some recent severe-weather events because the developing surface low should provide a clearer source of lift and organization.
Schuster expects scattered supercells and multicell storms to develop during the afternoon. Some could remain semi-discrete long enough to produce hail, strong wind gusts, and a brief tornado before merging into larger clusters.
Washington to Virginia Could See an Evening Storm Line
One scenario Schuster discussed shows a small line or cluster of thunderstorms developing near Washington, D.C., and Charlottesville during the middle to late afternoon.
If that line becomes organized, he said an isolated tornado or two could become embedded within it around the early evening.
Storms may extend from central New York all the way south into Virginia, although the greatest severe-weather risk should remain farther south.

Schuster said severe storms are less likely in New York than in eastern Virginia, where the atmosphere appears more favorable for damaging winds and localized rotation.
Most of the severe weather should begin winding down by around 9 p.m. as storms push toward Virginia Beach and Salisbury.
This portion of the forecast is important because the severe threat is only the first stage of the larger weather system. The same broad disturbance that helps produce thunderstorms Tuesday is then expected to evolve into something far less typical for late July.
A Rare Summer Coastal Low Develops Wednesday
By Wednesday, Schuster expects a coastal low to form just offshore from New England.
He stressed that the system will not be tropical, but its structure and impacts could resemble a nor’easter more commonly associated with colder months.
“This is a pretty big surprise because we don’t see coastal lows like this hardly ever in the month of July,” Schuster said.
The storm could bring widespread heavy rain from the New York City area through southern New England, including Bridgeport, Providence, and Boston.
Schuster said a broad area may receive between one and three inches of rain, while localized totals could reach five or even six inches.
That amount of rain in a relatively short period could create a serious flash-flooding problem, especially in urban areas and locations where drainage systems become overwhelmed.
A summer coastal storm like this is fascinating because the impacts may feel familiar even though the timing is not. Heavy rain, strong onshore winds, and a tightly wound low-pressure system are more commonly associated with fall or winter along the Northeast coast.
Long Island Could See 50 to 60 MPH Gusts
The coastal low is also expected to produce strong winds.
Schuster highlighted Long Island, especially areas near Southampton and Brookhaven, where gusts could reach 50 to 60 mph from late Wednesday into early Thursday.
Those winds may be strong enough to bring down tree limbs, cause isolated power outages, and make coastal travel more difficult.
The exact impact will depend heavily on the track of the low.

Some model guidance places the system slightly farther inland, while other solutions keep it just offshore. Schuster said an offshore track could allow the storm to strengthen more efficiently and create greater problems for Long Island and southern New England.
If the center tracks farther inland, the heaviest rain could shift westward.
That uncertainty makes the next few forecast updates especially important. A change of even 50 to 100 miles in the track could move the corridor of heaviest rain and strongest winds into a very different group of communities.
The Storm Could Linger Into Thursday
Schuster expects the low to remain near the coast through at least part of Thursday before gradually moving away.
That means some locations could experience hours of persistent rain rather than a quick round of thunderstorms.
Flooding may therefore become the more important hazard after the initial severe-weather threat fades.
The biggest concern will likely be areas where heavy rain repeatedly moves over the same locations.
New York City and other densely populated parts of the Northeast are particularly vulnerable to short-duration flash flooding because pavement prevents water from soaking into the ground quickly.
Several inches of rain falling over a large metropolitan area can cause major travel problems even without a tropical storm or hurricane.
This is one reason the system deserves attention despite its non-tropical classification. The label matters meteorologically, but flooding and strong winds can still create significant disruptions regardless of what type of storm produces them.
More Storms Could Return by the Weekend
Once the coastal system moves away, Schuster said the forecast becomes more uncertain.
He is watching Friday and Saturday for another storm system moving across the Mississippi River Valley.
That system could produce flooding along with isolated to scattered severe thunderstorms, although computer models disagree on where the greatest threat will develop.

Sunday could bring another round of severe weather to the far northern Plains and Minnesota, but confidence remains low.
Schuster also sees the possibility of one or two additional storm systems moving through the Midwest early next week.
For now, he cautioned that forecast confidence drops considerably beyond the next several days.
The most immediate concern remains Tuesday’s severe-weather risk along the East Coast, followed by the unusual coastal storm expected Wednesday and Thursday.
A Category 5 Hurricane Spins Far Out in the Pacific
Schuster also highlighted a separate and highly unusual development in the eastern Pacific.
He said a Category 5 hurricane was present in the basin during July for the first time since 2002.
The storm, Hurricane Genevieve, was moving west well away from Mexico and was not expected to produce significant land impacts over the next several days.
Schuster said the hurricane had intensified rapidly and could approach maximum sustained winds of roughly 165 to 170 mph.
He described its appearance on infrared satellite imagery as impressive, while emphasizing that its remote position greatly reduced the immediate danger to populated areas.
The combination of a rare July coastal low in the Northeast and an exceptionally intense Pacific hurricane makes this an unusual stretch of summer weather.
Still, the coastal storm is the system most likely to affect large numbers of people in the United States over the next few days.
Schuster’s forecast points to a progression from severe thunderstorms Tuesday, to widespread rain and strong coastal winds Wednesday and Thursday, followed by another uncertain round of storminess later in the week.
