A major change in the weather pattern is expected to unfold from this weekend into early next week, when a strengthening storm system could bring a renewed stretch of severe thunderstorms from the northern Plains and Midwest into the Great Lakes, Ohio Valley, and eventually parts of the East Coast.

Meteorologist Max Schuster, host of the Max Velocity – Severe Weather Center, said the developing setup could become “supercharged” as a large dome of heat settles over the central United States while disturbances repeatedly move along its northern edge.

The first part of the weekend should remain relatively quiet across much of the country, although pockets of heavy rain and isolated strong storms will continue. By Sunday, however, Schuster expects an intensifying area of low pressure to begin organizing over the northern Plains, opening the door to a broader and potentially more dangerous severe-weather pattern.

Monday currently appears to have the strongest chance of producing an organized event, with damaging winds, large hail, and tornadoes all possible across parts of the Great Lakes and Ohio Valley, before the threat may shift toward the Mid-Atlantic, Northeast, and Carolina coastline on Tuesday.

Friday Brings Lingering Flooding and Tropical Moisture

Before the larger storm develops, Schuster said flooding will remain a concern Friday across parts of the Southeast and East Coast, where deep tropical moisture has been feeding repeated rounds of rain into already vulnerable areas.

The heaviest rainfall should begin easing compared with the earlier part of the week, but lingering showers and thunderstorms may continue from Alabama and the southern Appalachians into North Carolina and coastal Virginia.

Some communities have already received several inches of rain, and Schuster warned that additional rainfall could still create problems in low-lying areas, along rivers, and on roads where drainage is poor.

The greatest concern has been concentrated across North Carolina and southeastern Virginia, including areas near Raleigh, Virginia Beach, Cape Hatteras, and the Great Smoky Mountains, where forecast models had suggested highly uneven totals ranging from a few inches to locally extreme amounts.

Schuster said a few places could receive six to eight inches or more over the broader event, with isolated locations along the Outer Banks and nearby coastline potentially approaching eight to 10 inches.

Those totals will not be widespread, but the pattern remains dangerous because slow-moving thunderstorms can repeatedly cross the same communities while nearby areas receive much less rain.

That kind of uneven flooding threat is often harder for the public to judge than a large, fast-moving storm, since conditions can appear manageable until one narrow band stalls over the same roads and neighborhoods for several hours.

Schuster again urged drivers to avoid flooded streets and warned residents in low-lying areas to remain alert until the moisture finally begins moving away.

Bertha’s Main Threat Shifts Toward Texas

The remnants of Tropical Storm Bertha are also expected to affect the western Gulf Coast, although Schuster said the system should remain weak and is unlikely to become a major tropical threat.

Bertha previously made landfall in Louisiana as a low-end tropical storm with winds near 45 mph before its circulation drifted back toward the Gulf.

As the system moves close to the Texas coastline Friday, moisture may spread inland from Corpus Christi toward Galveston and Houston, bringing periods of heavy rain and a localized risk of flooding.

Schuster said the center could remain near the coast and make another landfall as a weak tropical storm or tropical depression, with little opportunity for significant strengthening.

The system’s strongest impacts should remain close to the immediate shoreline, where gusty winds, rough surf, and storm surge approaching three feet may occur in some areas between the Texas coast and Louisiana.

Dangerous rip currents will also remain a concern for beachgoers along the Gulf Coast during the next several days.

Although Bertha is not expected to become a major storm, weaker tropical systems can still cause trouble when moisture concentrates over urban areas or coastal roads that flood easily.

The main message from Schuster was that residents should pay attention to local rainfall and coastal warnings without treating Bertha as a hurricane-level emergency.

Saturday Offers a Brief Pause Before the Pattern Changes

Saturday should be comparatively calmer across much of the country, with scattered showers and thunderstorms across the Southeast and only a limited severe-weather threat farther north.

A weak disturbance crossing the Midwest and Great Lakes may produce isolated storms, but Schuster said widespread severe weather appears unlikely during most of the day.

The larger story will be the growing heat dome across the central United States.

High pressure building over the Plains is expected to push temperatures higher while creating a sharp contrast between hot, humid air to the south and cooler air moving through the northern states.

That boundary will help guide later storm systems along the northern edge of the heat, producing a corridor where thunderstorms may repeatedly develop and move from west to east.

Schuster described the broader setup as a persistent pattern rather than one isolated severe-weather day.

The heat dome will act almost like a barrier, forcing disturbances to travel around its northern side through the northern Plains, Midwest, Great Lakes, and Ohio Valley.

This pattern can support repeated rounds of storms because the atmosphere has time to rebuild heat and moisture between each disturbance.

It also means the same general regions could face more than one threat during the final days of July.

Sunday Could Mark the Start of a Larger Severe-Weather Event

The forecast becomes more concerning Sunday as a strengthening storm system moves into the northern Plains.

Schuster said surface pressure may fall to around 995 millibars by Sunday evening, a sign that the system could become well organized as it approaches the Midwest.

Nebraska, Iowa, Minnesota, Wisconsin, and perhaps northern Illinois currently appear to be among the areas most likely to see thunderstorms capable of producing damaging winds, large hail, and possibly tornadoes.

The exact risk will depend on how quickly the storm strengthens, how much instability develops during the day, and whether earlier thunderstorms interfere with the atmosphere’s ability to recharge.

Schuster said all major hazards could be possible, although the details remain uncertain several days in advance.

Sunday may begin with more isolated activity before storms become better organized later in the day and evening.

If the system strengthens as expected, supercells or clusters of severe storms could develop before merging into larger lines that move eastward.

The tornado risk is not yet clearly defined, but the combination of strong winds at different levels of the atmosphere and increasing moisture will need to be watched closely.

This is the first stage of what Schuster expects could become a multi-day event rather than a single afternoon of storms.

Monday May Bring the Most Organized Threat

Monday currently stands out as the day with the best chance of a significant and organized severe-weather event.

As the storm system shifts southeast from the northern Plains, Schuster expects the main risk area to move into the Great Lakes, Midwest, and Ohio Valley.

He said wind profiles were already showing signs that the atmosphere could support organized thunderstorms, with strong low-level winds and a favorable jet-stream pattern increasing the potential for rotating storms and widespread damaging winds.

Cities and communities from the upper Midwest into the Great Lakes and Ohio Valley may need to prepare for several types of severe weather, rather than one dominant hazard.

Large hail could develop with more isolated storms, tornadoes may become possible where wind shear is strongest, and a later line of thunderstorms could produce a broader damaging-wind threat.

Schuster said the setup may resemble the pattern that affected some of the same regions only a few days earlier, although it will be a different storm system.

That repeated targeting is important because communities recovering from earlier wind damage, power outages, or flooding may be more vulnerable when another organized system arrives.

The Monday forecast remains subject to change, but it is already the period Schuster said he is watching most closely.

A stronger or slower storm could increase the tornado and hail risk, while faster development into a line would favor more widespread straight-line wind damage.

By Tuesday, the system is expected to move toward the Mid-Atlantic, Northeast, and East Coast, although the exact track remains less certain.

Schuster said severe storms could affect areas from the Carolina coastline northward toward New York and New England if the storm intensifies in the right position.

The threat may once again include damaging winds, hail, and tornadoes, depending on how much warm and humid air remains ahead of the cold front.

A track farther north would place more of the Northeast at risk, while a more southern route could focus the strongest storms across the Mid-Atlantic and Carolinas.

Because Tuesday is still several days away, Schuster cautioned that it was too early to draw a precise risk area.

The larger pattern, however, supports an active stretch of weather from Sunday through at least Tuesday, with the possibility that additional disturbances could follow later in the week.

By the middle and end of next week, forecast confidence falls, but the heat dome and surrounding jet-stream pattern may continue to reload the atmosphere and send more storms through the same broad corridor.

The final days of July could therefore bring repeated severe-weather opportunities rather than one isolated outbreak.

Schuster’s forecast does not suggest that every day will produce widespread damage, and some areas may avoid the strongest storms entirely.

Even so, the developing pattern deserves attention because it combines dangerous heat, deep moisture, and a series of disturbances moving through regions that have already experienced an active month.

The quieter weather Friday and Saturday may offer only a brief pause before the atmosphere becomes more volatile.

By Sunday, the northern Plains and Midwest could be dealing with the first organized storms, followed by a potentially stronger event across the Great Lakes and Ohio Valley on Monday and another possible East Coast threat on Tuesday.

That progression is why Schuster warned that a huge storm would be unleashed over the weekend and into next week, bringing a renewed round of severe weather to a large part of the country.
