Meteorologist Max Schuster is warning that a busy and potentially dangerous stretch of severe weather is taking shape across the central United States, with repeated chances for damaging winds, large hail, tornadoes, and localized flooding from Thursday through early next week.
In his latest forecast for Max Velocity – Severe Weather Center, Schuster said people across the Great Plains, Midwest, and Ohio Valley should pay close attention as several disturbances move through a highly active weather pattern. While the exact placement of the strongest storms later in the period remains uncertain, he said the setup could produce severe weather every day in some part of the country through the weekend and into Monday.
The near-term concern begins across the central and southern Plains, where Schuster expects storms to become more organized through Thursday afternoon and evening. Beyond that, the focus is expected to gradually shift toward the northern Plains, Midwest, and Ohio Valley, where stronger low-level winds and a more favorable upper-level pattern could create a broader severe-weather threat.
Schuster’s central message was not that every community will see severe weather, but that the pattern is active enough that people in several regions should be prepared for conditions to change quickly. The forecast contains a mix of confidence and uncertainty, especially for the weekend, but the potential hazards are serious enough that residents should not treat the coming days as routine summer thunderstorms.
Thursday Could Bring Strong Tornadoes in the Central Plains
Schuster said Thursday’s most serious severe-weather potential is expected across parts of the central and southern Plains, with a large Level 2 out of 5 risk area stretching from Wyoming toward Springfield, Missouri.
The broad outlook includes damaging winds, large hail, and isolated tornadoes, but Schuster said the tornado potential appears more concerning near Wichita, Kansas; Enid, Oklahoma; and Tulsa, Oklahoma.
He specifically warned that EF2-plus tornadoes could be possible in that corridor during the afternoon and evening if storms become sufficiently organized.

“The tornado threat looks a little bit more concerning” in that region, Schuster said, adding that the setup could support strong tornadoes if the atmosphere develops as expected.
By midafternoon, he expects rotating storms may begin forming near Tulsa and Springfield. Damaging winds and isolated hail could occur first, but the concern grows later in the evening as storms potentially become supercells.
Schuster said the period from roughly 6 p.m. through 10 p.m. could become especially important, with several storms capable of producing tornadoes, large hail, and damaging winds.
He noted that the environment may become highly supportive of tornado-producing storms, with significant tornado parameter values potentially reaching around six. Those kinds of values do not guarantee tornadoes, but they are a sign that the atmosphere may contain the ingredients needed for stronger rotation if storms form in the right locations.
The main uncertainty, Schuster said, will be storm mode and boundary interactions. In other words, whether the storms stay separate and rotating or quickly merge into a larger line will make a major difference in how serious the tornado threat becomes.
That distinction is important because individual supercells generally have more room to rotate and produce tornadoes, while a fast-moving line of storms can shift the larger concern toward widespread damaging winds.
Ohio Valley Could See Lower-End Severe Weather
While the Plains are expected to see the most notable severe-weather setup Thursday, Schuster said scattered showers and storms could also move through parts of the Ohio Valley during the daylight hours.
He does not expect widespread severe weather there, but he said a low-end damaging-wind threat and a small chance of spin-up tornadoes could develop near the Kentucky, Indiana, and Ohio border.
That area has already seen severe weather episodes in recent weeks, and Schuster said it remains worth monitoring even though the larger and more organized threat should be farther west.

The forecast highlights a common challenge during active summer weather patterns: one region can be facing a focused tornado setup while another is dealing with scattered storms that may still produce isolated but dangerous wind damage or brief tornadoes.
The lower-end label should not be confused with no risk. Smaller severe-weather events can still create serious problems for people caught outdoors, driving, working in vulnerable structures, or living in areas with weak shelter options.
Schuster’s forecast suggests that Thursday’s weather may require attention across a wide part of the country, even though the strongest ingredients appear concentrated from Oklahoma and Kansas into parts of Missouri.
Friday Threat May Shift Toward the Ozarks and Midwest
By Friday, Schuster expects the severe-weather threat to move east, but he said the current outlook may not yet fully capture the area most likely to see trouble.
He said the best chance for severe weather could develop from the Tulsa area east toward St. Louis and Louisville, particularly if storms from Thursday leave behind boundaries and enough energy for new storms to develop.
Those leftover boundaries can become important because they help storms find areas of enhanced wind shear and instability. When that happens, a forecast that initially appears modest can become more concerning in a small but important corridor.
Schuster said damaging winds, hail, and a few tornadoes could be possible Friday from the Ozarks into the Ohio Valley. He also said the exact threat will depend heavily on what happens during Thursday’s storms.
That is one reason severe-weather forecasting becomes difficult during multi-day outbreaks or active stretches. A storm complex from one evening can change the atmosphere for the next day by cooling the air, shifting moisture, leaving outflow boundaries, or changing where new storms can form.
Schuster said some storms Friday may be difficult to initiate because of high temperatures and lower dew points in parts of the Plains. However, he still believes isolated severe storms could pop up where enough lift develops, especially in areas closer to the Ohio Valley and Ozarks.
The broader message is that Friday may look quieter on paper than Thursday, but it should not be ignored. A few rotating storms or a damaging-wind event in a more populated corridor can still have major consequences.
Weekend Setup Remains Uncertain but Could Be Significant
The biggest unanswered questions in Schuster’s forecast involve Saturday and Sunday.
He said the upper-level pattern is expected to become more favorable for severe weather over the northern Plains and Midwest, while strong low-level winds could increase the potential for damaging winds and tornadoes.
However, the exact location of the main low-pressure system remains uncertain, and that will determine where the most dangerous weather sets up.

On Saturday, Schuster said all severe-weather hazards could be possible across North Dakota, South Dakota, and Montana. The current setup may support significant straight-line winds and strong tornadoes, although he stressed that the precise location of the most serious threat is still not locked in.
The European model, he said, currently places the system in a way that makes the forecast less dramatic in some areas, but a shift farther south and east could create a much more concerning situation across the northern Plains.
Sunday may be even more uncertain.
Schuster said the strongest threat could remain near extreme northern North Dakota and into Canada if the main circulation stays far north. But if the low-pressure system shifts farther south and east, the northern Plains could face a much more widespread tornado threat.
“It could have a tornado outbreak on our hands somewhere in the northern Plains,” Schuster said, while emphasizing that the exact target area remains unclear.
That kind of forecast uncertainty is frustrating for people who want a simple city-by-city answer several days ahead. But it is also honest. The ingredients may be present for a major event, while the placement of the low-pressure system will determine whether those ingredients come together over heavily populated areas, rural areas, or farther north into Canada.
The next day or two will be especially important for narrowing down that weekend risk.
Monday Could Bring the Threat Into the Midwest
Schuster said Monday could bring a significant severe-weather threat farther east into parts of the Midwest, including Wisconsin, Minnesota, and Iowa.
Again, he said the outcome depends on where the low-pressure system develops and how the weekend storms reshape the atmosphere. The threat could shift southeast, remain farther north, or organize into a larger severe-weather event if the ingredients align.
That uncertainty does not mean the risk is weak. It means the forecast is still in the stage where meteorologists can identify the broad region of concern but cannot yet confidently identify which communities will face the greatest danger.
For residents in Minnesota, Wisconsin, Iowa, and nearby states, the situation is worth following closely through the weekend. Schuster’s forecast suggests that the severe-weather threat may not end after one night of storms but could continue moving eastward in waves.
This type of pattern is often exhausting because people may have to stay alert multiple evenings in a row. It can also make recovery harder for communities that have already dealt with wind damage, hail, power outages, or heavy rain earlier in the week.
Heavy Rain Could Add Flooding Concerns
In addition to the severe-weather risks, Schuster said several parts of the central Plains and Ohio Valley could receive significant rainfall over the next week.
He expects much of the Southeast and Dixie Alley to avoid the heavier rain that has affected those areas recently, which he described as positive news after repeated wet weather.
But farther north and west, rainfall could become a concern from Indianapolis through St. Louis and back toward Wichita.

Schuster said many communities in that area could receive between one and three inches of rain before the end of June. He also warned that localized totals could exceed four or five inches, especially near Bloomington, St. Louis, and Rolla.
That does not automatically mean widespread flooding, but it raises the risk in places where storms repeatedly move over the same location or where drainage systems are already strained.
Flooding can become a secondary danger during severe-weather periods because people often focus on tornadoes and hail while underestimating how quickly water can cover roads, fill low-lying areas, or cut off travel routes.
Schuster urged viewers in the affected regions to remain alert for changing conditions, particularly if storms repeatedly track across the same communities.
A Long Stretch That Requires Close Attention
Schuster’s forecast describes more than a single day of thunderstorms. It points to an active seven-day period in which severe-weather opportunities may keep redeveloping from the Plains into the Midwest and Ohio Valley.
Thursday appears to carry the clearest near-term concern for stronger tornadoes, especially from Oklahoma and Kansas into Missouri. Friday may shift some of that activity east toward the Ozarks and Ohio Valley, while the weekend could bring a potentially more significant but still uncertain threat across the northern Plains.
By Monday, the focus may push farther into the Midwest, depending on how the larger weather pattern evolves.
The most practical takeaway is to avoid becoming complacent after one round of storms passes. This kind of pattern can produce isolated dangerous storms in several different places over several consecutive days, and the areas that look quiet one day may become the next focus as boundaries and low-pressure systems shift.
Schuster’s warning was simple: people in the Great Plains, Midwest, and Ohio Valley need to pay attention.
