A major weather pattern change is expected to bring repeated severe thunderstorms, dangerous flash flooding, and a possible return of extreme heat across parts of the United States in the days ahead, according to meteorologist Max Schuster of Max Velocity – Severe Weather Center.

Schuster said the upcoming stretch could become one of the more dramatic weather shifts of the summer, with storms threatening the Northern Plains, Midwest, Northeast, and parts of the central United States before a stronger heat dome may build later in July.

The forecast is not centered on one single storm. Instead, it involves several overlapping threats: organized thunderstorms capable of damaging winds, large hail, and isolated tornadoes; repeated heavy rain across parts of the Northeast; and a potential period of dangerous heat farther west and south next week.

For people in the areas expected to be affected, the larger concern is that the pattern may not give them much time to recover between rounds. One day may bring severe weather, the next may bring flooding, and the following week could bring extreme temperatures.

Tuesday Brings A Growing Severe Weather Risk

Schuster said Tuesday could bring a more organized severe-weather threat across parts of the Northern Plains.

A Level 2 risk was outlined from around Rapid City toward Minneapolis, with damaging winds, large to very large hail, and a few tornadoes possible. A broader Level 1 risk extended into places including Dallas, Shreveport, Richmond, Charlotte, and Sioux Falls, although the main focus was expected to remain farther north.

The most serious potential appears to be across South Dakota and Minnesota, where storms may develop during the evening.

Schuster said discrete supercells could form around 6 or 7 p.m., particularly near a boundary stretching from Winner, South Dakota, toward southern Minnesota. If storms interact with that boundary in the right way, he said an isolated strong tornado could become possible.

He stressed that the tornado setup remains uncertain because small differences in storm timing and exact location can determine whether storms remain separate or quickly merge into a line.

That uncertainty is common in summer severe-weather setups. The atmosphere can have the ingredients for dangerous storms, but a slight change in wind direction, temperature, or storm development can shift the highest risk dozens of miles away.

Schuster said the Storm Prediction Center had outlined a broad 2% tornado risk because forecasters did not yet know exactly where the strongest storm interaction would occur.

If storms stay discrete long enough, the tornado risk could rise. If they quickly combine into a larger line, the threat may shift more toward widespread straight-line wind damage.

Damaging Winds Could Become The Main Danger

The forecast may not be pointing toward a major tornado outbreak, but Schuster warned that damaging wind could become the most widespread concern.

He said storms could organize into a line across South Dakota and then push into Minnesota during the late evening and overnight hours.

Wind gusts could reach as high as 75 mph in some places, according to Schuster’s forecast, with embedded tornadoes also possible inside the line.

That kind of storm complex can be especially dangerous because it may travel quickly and affect many communities in a short period of time. Tornadoes often receive the most attention, but powerful straight-line winds can down trees, damage roofs, knock out power, and make roads dangerous over a much larger area.

Schuster specifically mentioned areas along Interstate 94 and Interstate 29, as storms could move toward communities near Alexandria and St. Cloud before weakening closer to Minneapolis.

He said people across the risk area should stay alert Tuesday evening, especially because the stronger storms may form after many people have already settled in for the night.

Nighttime severe weather often creates an added challenge. It is harder to see approaching storms, people may not hear warnings while asleep, and power outages can make it more difficult to receive updates.

Heavy Rain Could Keep The Northeast Waterlogged

While severe storms develop farther west, parts of the Northeast may face a different but equally serious threat: prolonged heavy rain and flash flooding.

Schuster said the region had already received substantial rainfall, and more rain could continue into Tuesday night. He highlighted parts of New York, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, Cape Cod, and Long Island as areas where flooding concerns could remain elevated.

He said an additional 1 to 5 inches of rain could fall in some places, while localized totals could be much higher if rain bands repeatedly move over the same communities.

Some model guidance, Schuster said, suggested that parts of southern Rhode Island, southeastern Massachusetts, Cape Cod, and nearby coastal areas could receive 5 to 10 inches of rain.

The exact placement of the heaviest rainfall remains uncertain, but Schuster said even a modest shift in rain bands could bring the highest totals farther inland.

That is why flash flooding can become dangerous even when the forecast does not call for a severe thunderstorm outbreak. A slow-moving rain band can overwhelm drainage systems, flood roads, and trap drivers before they realize how fast water is rising.

Schuster repeated the familiar safety message: “Turn around, don’t drown.”

It is simple advice, but it matters. Many flooding deaths happen when drivers try to cross water-covered roads, assuming the water is shallow enough to pass through.

Wednesday Shifts Storms Into The Midwest

By Wednesday, Schuster expects the severe-weather focus to shift farther east into parts of the Midwest.

The remains of Tuesday night’s storm system could bring damaging winds and large hail into Wisconsin, northern Michigan, and nearby areas.

Schuster said the tornado risk should remain relatively low, though not zero. He mentioned communities near Appleton, Sheboygan, and Reedsburg as places where residents should stay weather-aware for wind gusts up to 70 mph and the possibility of a brief tornado.

The threat could also extend across central and southern Wisconsin, especially as storms move through during the afternoon and evening.

Meanwhile, another area of concern may develop across the central Plains.

Schuster said storms forming off the Rockies could produce significant straight-line wind gusts Wednesday afternoon and evening. Those storms may move through areas near North Platte, Kearney, O’Neill, and Hays during the overnight period.

Some of that remaining storm energy could carry into parts of the Midwest by Thursday morning, potentially keeping the severe-weather risk active.

The broader pattern is what makes the forecast notable. Instead of one isolated storm day, several regions could face different forms of hazardous weather over several days.

Thursday And Friday Could Keep The Pattern Active

Schuster said Thursday may bring additional severe-weather chances across parts of the central and northern Plains, with scattered storms also possible in the Ohio Valley and Midwest.

The activity may not be as organized as the Tuesday and Wednesday threats, but it could still produce isolated damaging winds or hail.

By Friday, he said the focus may shift more toward the Northeast and Ohio Valley, where damaging winds could again become the primary concern.

The weekend forecast appeared less certain. Schuster said severe weather could be suppressed toward the Gulf Coast if a stronger high-pressure system begins to build over the Rockies.

That would not necessarily mean the weather becomes quiet everywhere. Instead, it could mean the most active storm track shifts away from the Great Plains, Midwest, and East Coast while hotter and drier conditions expand in other regions.

This kind of shift is a reminder that summer weather patterns often trade one hazard for another. Cooler temperatures and frequent storms may eventually give way to fewer storms but much more intense heat.

Extreme Heat Could Return Next Week

The longer-term concern in Schuster’s forecast is the possibility of a major heat wave developing during the middle of July.

He said models were beginning to suggest that a large high-pressure system could develop across the Rockies, allowing very hot air to build across Oklahoma, Texas, Kansas, and parts of the central United States.

Schuster said temperatures could potentially reach 110 degrees in some locations if the pattern develops as forecast.

He specifically mentioned model projections that showed temperatures around 110 degrees near Sioux Falls and 108 degrees near Oklahoma City by the middle of next week.

Those are air temperatures, not heat-index values. When humidity is added, conditions could feel even hotter in some areas.

Schuster also said places including Davenport, St. Louis, and Indianapolis could see heat indices well above 100 degrees.

The possibility of a heat wave deserves just as much attention as the severe-weather setup. Heat can become deadly quietly, especially for people with respiratory conditions, older adults, outdoor workers, children, and people without reliable air conditioning.

He urged people to stay hydrated if the hotter pattern begins to take shape.

A Week Of Weather That Requires Attention

Schuster’s overall message was that the country is entering a more complicated and potentially dangerous weather pattern.

Tuesday could bring supercells, large hail, damaging winds, and a localized tornado threat across the Northern Plains. Wednesday could shift the risk into Wisconsin, Michigan, and the central Plains. At the same time, parts of the Northeast may continue dealing with heavy rain and flash flooding.

Then, as the week moves forward, attention may turn toward a major heat risk in the middle of July.

The forecast contains plenty of uncertainty, especially when it comes to the precise location of tornado threats and the eventual strength of the heat dome. But the larger pattern is clear: several regions may face weather hazards that change quickly and require close attention.

Schuster’s advice is practical. Stay weather-aware, keep alerts turned on, and do not assume the threat is limited to one type of weather.

For many people, the next several days may bring a break from recent heat. But that relief may come with thunderstorms, flooding, and wind damage before another wave of extreme summer heat has a chance to build.
