Millions of Americans heading into the Fourth of July weekend may be dealing with more than crowded cookouts, fireworks traffic, and packed beaches. Meteorologist Jonathan Kegges of JustWeather says a dangerous and potentially historic heatwave is spreading across much of the eastern United States, with some cities nearing or breaking records as the holiday arrives.
In his latest forecast, Kegges warned that the worst heat may arrive before the Fourth itself, especially on Friday, when many workers will have the day off for the observed holiday. The National Weather Service heat-risk map showed large areas of red and purple across the Midwest, Ohio Valley, Mid-Atlantic, and Northeast, indicating major to extreme heat danger.
Kegges said the map is not simply showing normal July warmth. He said the conditions could rank among the hottest Fourth of July periods on record for millions of people, especially in the eastern half of the country.
“It’s summer. It’s supposed to be hot,” he said, acknowledging the usual reaction to heat warnings. But Kegges argued that this event is different because the heat will be widespread, intense, and dangerous enough to create health concerns for people spending long hours outside.
The forecast is especially important because the holiday weekend often involves cookouts, parades, fireworks, sports, travel, and long periods in direct sun. A day that begins with a casual backyard gathering can become dangerous quickly when temperatures rise toward triple digits and humidity makes it harder for the body to cool down.
Red And Purple On The Heat Risk Map
Kegges showed the National Weather Service heat-risk outlook for Saturday, July 4, explaining that red areas represented a major heat risk and purple areas indicated an extreme level of concern.
He emphasized that those colors are not meant to create panic. They are meant to signal conditions where heat can seriously affect people’s health, especially children, older adults, people with medical conditions, outdoor workers, and anyone spending too much time in direct sunlight.
The red and purple zones stretched across parts of Ohio, Pennsylvania, Kentucky, Tennessee, Washington, D.C., and major cities along the Interstate 95 corridor. Large sections of Iowa, Missouri, Illinois, and Arkansas were also included in the highest-risk areas.
Kegges said Friday could be even more intense than Saturday in several locations.
For people planning a day off before the holiday, that may be a crucial detail. Friday cookouts, long drives, outdoor errands, and early fireworks events could happen during the most dangerous part of the heatwave.
The heat map offers a useful way to think beyond a single temperature number. A forecast high of 96 degrees may sound manageable to some people, but the overall risk changes when humidity, overnight temperatures, sun exposure, and the length of the heat event are added together.
That is why a major or extreme heat-risk category deserves attention. It is not only about whether a thermometer touches 100 degrees. It is about whether the weather creates conditions where the body has trouble recovering.
Forecast Highs Could Challenge Records
Kegges also showed forecast highs that could approach or exceed records in several major cities.

He said Pittsburgh could reach 98 degrees, Detroit 95, Roanoke 99, and Charlotte 100. Boston was forecast near 101 degrees, while New York City was expected to be near the record range even if it did not immediately break a mark.
For Saturday, Kegges said the heat might ease slightly in some areas, but he quickly clarified that “slightly” did not mean comfortable.
Roanoke was forecast to reach 101 degrees on July 4, while Charlotte could stay near 100 and Pittsburgh could remain around 94. Those numbers would still create a difficult environment for anyone standing outdoors for parades, sporting events, cookouts, or fireworks.
Kegges joked that Saturday would be “cooler” in some locations before making it clear that the difference would be small. In a heatwave like this, a few degrees can matter, but a drop from 101 to 97 is not relief in the way most people think of relief.
The forecast also raises practical questions for families. Fireworks shows often begin after sunset, but many people arrive hours early, sit in parking lots, or remain outside through the hottest part of the evening. People can become dehydrated long before the fireworks actually begin.
That makes planning more important than usual. Bringing water, finding shade, limiting alcohol, checking on relatives, and knowing where the nearest cooling space is can make a difference during a prolonged heat event.
The High-Pressure Ridge Behind The Heat
Kegges said the heatwave is being driven by a powerful ridge of high pressure in the upper atmosphere.
He described the feature as a large high-pressure cell sitting roughly 15,000 to 20,000 feet above the ground. On weather maps, it appears as a broad area of orange and red covering much of the eastern United States.
When that type of ridge settles overhead, air sinks downward. As the air sinks, it warms and dries out, creating the kind of hot, stagnant weather that can linger for days.
“It literally sizzles you,” Kegges said while explaining what happens beneath a strong upper-level ridge.
The ridge also pushes cooler air and storm systems around its outer edge. That is why some areas near the perimeter may see scattered thunderstorms while locations beneath the center of the ridge remain hot, dry, and largely storm-free.
Meteorologists often call that broader setup a “ring of fire” pattern. The name refers to the zone around the outside of the high-pressure ridge, where storms can repeatedly form as warmer, unstable air meets disturbances moving around the edge.
For people living under the heart of the ridge, the main concern is oppressive heat. For people living along the outer edge, the threat can include both heat and scattered thunderstorms.
That contrast is one reason this pattern is so difficult to summarize in a single headline. One region may be baking under extreme heat while another is dealing with storm chances, and both are connected to the same large weather system.
The West Gets A Different Fourth Of July Forecast
While much of the eastern United States faces dangerous heat, Kegges said parts of the West may actually see relatively cooler conditions for early July.

He pointed to a dip in the jet stream across the western United States, which is helping keep temperatures lower than average in some locations.
For the Fourth of July, Great Falls was forecast near 77 degrees and Rapid City around 83. Even Las Vegas, which was expected to reach 103, was shown in a below-normal category for this time of year.
That is a striking contrast. A city such as Las Vegas can be hotter than almost anywhere else in the country and still be running below its normal July temperature, while cities in the East are experiencing unusual and record-threatening heat.
It is a reminder that weather risks are always regional. One person may be dealing with a serious heat emergency while another is enjoying a cooler-than-normal holiday weekend only a few states away.
Still, the western forecast comes with another issue: fire weather.
Tropical Trouble Could Briefly Develop Offshore
Kegges also discussed a possible tropical disturbance off the Southeast coast.
He said there was a limited window of roughly 24 to 48 hours for the system to organize, with some European ensemble guidance showing a decent chance of tropical depression formation late in the week.
The conditions off the Southeast coast were warm enough for development, Kegges said, with water temperatures in the mid to upper 80s. But he also noted that the disturbance may not have much time to strengthen.

The system was expected to encounter less favorable conditions as it drifted back toward the Atlantic coastline. Kegges said the spin associated with the disturbance could weaken and fade as the feature moved closer to the Southeast.
If the system does form, he said it would need to develop quickly.
For now, Kegges described the most likely impact as scattered downpours along parts of the Southeast coast rather than a major tropical threat. Still, he encouraged viewers to keep watching the forecast because tropical systems can change quickly when warm water and upper-level winds line up in the right way.
This is another example of why holiday forecasts deserve repeated checks. A weather setup can look quiet one day, then shift enough to affect beach plans, boating conditions, or fireworks events the next.
Fire Risk And Smoke Continue In The West
Kegges ended his forecast by turning to the West, where major fires in parts of Utah, Colorado, Arizona, and the broader Four Corners region were continuing to create smoke and air-quality concerns.
He said the worst critical fire-weather conditions had backed off compared with the previous weekend, but the ongoing fires remained a major problem.
Smoke was expected to continue moving from southwest to northeast, affecting air quality across portions of the region. Kegges said the smoke could be especially difficult for people with respiratory issues, but he noted that even healthy people may notice the effects of thick smoke in the air.

The fire-weather danger was expected to remain moderate to high in portions of Texas, the Front Range, the Plains, southeast Utah, and Arizona during the afternoons and evenings.
Kegges said conditions were improving compared with the worst fire-weather periods, but they were not safe enough to ignore. Dry vegetation, low humidity, and gusty winds can still create conditions where fires spread quickly.
For residents in the West, the holiday weekend may involve a different kind of preparation. Instead of looking for cooling centers, they may need to watch air-quality alerts, avoid outdoor burning, and pay close attention to local fire restrictions.
Heat Is The Main Holiday Threat In The East
Kegges’ overall message was straightforward: the Fourth of July heatwave deserves to be taken seriously.
The hottest conditions may arrive before the holiday itself, with Friday bringing major and extreme heat risk across large portions of the eastern United States. Saturday could remain dangerously hot, even where temperatures ease by only a few degrees.
The forecast does not mean every outdoor plan has to be canceled. But it does mean people should plan around the heat instead of pretending it is just another summer day.
A cookout can be moved into shade. A long walk can wait until later. Fireworks can still be watched, but families may need to bring more water, arrive later, and avoid spending hours in exposed parking lots or open fields.
The most important thing, according to Kegges, is to pay attention to the heat-risk map and take care of yourself.
