A burst of summer-like heat has spread across the East, bringing some of the hottest May temperatures in decades to major cities along the I-95 corridor, according to FOX Weather meteorologist Ian Oliver.
Oliver said the heat was already pushing Philadelphia into the mid-90s, with a reading of 95 degrees shown during the FOX Weather report, even though the city’s average high for this time of year is usually in the mid-70s. That kind of jump is not just uncomfortable; it is the kind of abrupt warm-up that can catch people off guard, especially after a cooler start to the month.
“We talk about weather hazards,” Oliver said. “Number one weather-related killer in the United States and globally is heat.”
That warning was central to the report, because the forecast was not just about a warm afternoon or a quick taste of summer. Oliver said temperatures through the middle of the week were moving toward dangerous territory, with heat alerts issued and dozens of record highs expected.
The timing makes the heat feel even more unusual. It is still May, but parts of the East are being forecast to feel more like peak summer, with some cities threatening all-time monthly records rather than just daily records.
Heat Alerts Stretch Through The Northeast
Oliver said heat advisories were in effect along a long stretch of the I-95 corridor, including both sides of the Delaware River from Philadelphia up toward New York City, with northern Delaware also included.
The alerts also extended into parts of southern New England, including a large portion of Massachusetts, Rhode Island away from the water, northeastern Connecticut, and parts of New Hampshire.
That wide reach is important because early-season heat can be harder on the body than similar temperatures later in the summer. People have not fully adjusted yet, air conditioning may not be in regular use, and outdoor plans may not be built around heat safety the way they are in July or August.
Oliver said another roughly 80 record highs were expected, which shows how broad this warm spell is rather than being limited to one or two hot spots.
In Philadelphia, the numbers were especially striking. Oliver said the city’s all-time May record is 97 degrees, and the forecast was pushing close to that level, with the possibility of going even higher.
He noted that a 97-degree reading would tie Philadelphia’s hottest May day on record, while a forecast of 98 degrees would stand alone as the city’s all-time May record.
Philadelphia Challenges Its May Record
Philadelphia sat near the center of Oliver’s report because of how close the city was expected to come to historic May heat.

He said the city had already reached 95 degrees, while the old daily calendar record was 94 degrees from 1962. That means the heat was not only unusually strong for the season, but strong enough to challenge records that had stood for decades.
Oliver also pointed out that Philadelphia’s last 95-degree May day happened just last year, so a mid-90s day in May is not completely unheard of. Still, the forecast range near 97 or 98 degrees put this event in a different category.
The difference between a hot May day and an all-time May record may seem small on paper, but it matters in practice because each extra degree can make outdoor conditions more stressful, especially in urban areas where pavement, buildings, and traffic can trap heat.

One of the most striking contrasts in the FOX Weather report involved Boston.
Oliver showed that while Philadelphia was in the 90s and Washington, D.C., had climbed into the low 90s, Boston was sitting at just 64 degrees because of an east wind coming off the Atlantic. He said the “marine layer” was winning out there, keeping the city much cooler than inland areas.
But Oliver said that pattern would change as winds shifted, allowing much hotter air to move into Boston.
“Imagine that 64 right now,” Oliver said, before noting that Boston’s forecast high would rise into the 90s.
He explained that the difference between an east wind off the water and a southwest wind off the land “can’t be overstated.” In simple terms, ocean air can act like a natural air conditioner for coastal New England, but when the wind direction changes, that cooling influence can disappear quickly.
That kind of setup is fascinating because it shows how two places in the same region can feel like different seasons on the same day. A city near the water can sit in the 60s while inland or down the corridor, communities are sweating through temperatures more than 30 degrees warmer.
According to Oliver, Boston’s jump toward the 90s would likely smash the old record high, making the wind shift one of the biggest reasons southern New England was included in the heat alerts.
Washington And New York Join The Heat Surge
Oliver also highlighted Washington, D.C., and New York City as part of the expanding heat zone.

Washington was expected to reach 97 degrees, according to Oliver, and he said there had been only three hotter May days on record there. He also noted that the heat was arriving during the middle part of the month, even though many people might expect the biggest May heat records to happen closer to the end of the month.
That detail makes the setup more notable. The East is not simply finishing May with summer heat; it is challenging major records before the final stretch of the month.
New York was forecast to rise into the mid-90s as well, after sitting much cooler earlier because of wind direction and coastal influence. Oliver said the I-95 corridor from Philadelphia to New York was under heat advisories as the record warmth built.
In a densely populated corridor like this, heat becomes more than a weather headline. It affects commuting, schools, outdoor workers, public transportation, older buildings without strong cooling systems, and people who may not have easy access to air conditioning.

Oliver also pointed to a sharp temperature contrast farther west, where Des Moines was forecast to reach only 59 degrees while Cincinnati was expected to climb to 87.
He said that clash marked the front, the same boundary FOX Weather meteorologist Nick had been showing as a focus for severe weather. Oliver said the boundary would produce more severe weather, with some of that risk continuing into the following day.
That adds another layer to the weather story. The same pattern helping to pump unusual heat into the East was also creating a strong temperature divide, and strong divides often become important zones for storms.
The result is a weather setup with two very different hazards at once: dangerous early-season heat in the East and a storm-producing boundary separating warm air from much cooler conditions farther west.
