Meteorologist Max Schuster says the United States is entering one of the strangest late-May weather patterns he has covered in years, with a setup that is both unusually quiet for peak severe weather season and still capable of producing scattered dangerous storms in parts of the country.
In the latest forecast for Max Velocity – Severe Weather Center, Schuster said the atmosphere is being shaped by a persistent omega block, a pattern that can freeze large pieces of the weather map in place for days at a time. In this case, he said, it is pushing the main storm track away from the classic Tornado Alley setup that people would normally expect during the final days of May.
The result is a strange split. Schuster said major severe weather outbreaks appear unlikely for the rest of May, but he also warned that mesoscale storm setups can still produce damaging winds, large hail, and even a few tornadoes with much less advance notice than the large, more obvious storm systems that have driven many outbreaks earlier this year.
“A highly unusual weather pattern is developing across the United States,” Schuster said, adding that the country is moving into a stretch that could become historic because of how abnormal it is for this time of year.
A May Pattern That Almost Does Not Look Like May
Schuster said one of the most surprising signs of the current pattern is what has not happened in Oklahoma.
According to Schuster, Oklahoma may finish the entire month of May without a single tornado report for the first time in 21 years, something he said “almost feels impossible” during the peak of severe weather season.

That detail is striking because May is usually one of the most watched months of the year for severe weather across the central United States. Oklahoma, in particular, is often viewed as one of the centerpieces of spring tornado season, so a May without a tornado report there would stand out sharply against the state’s usual reputation.
Instead of a classic warm, volatile pattern focused across traditional Tornado Alley, Schuster said a blocking setup is taking over. The biggest piece of that pattern is a massive low pressure system along the West Coast, another low pressure area near Canada and the Northeast, and a high pressure system wedged between them.
Schuster described the setup as a sandwich, with the high pressure system trapped between two different low pressure systems. That creates the omega block, named for the shape the pattern makes in the upper levels of the atmosphere.
By Friday and into the weekend, Schuster said the pattern should become more clearly defined, with the two lows sitting in roughly the same broad regions while the high pressure holds in between.
Why The Big Outbreak Risk Looks Muted
Schuster said the omega block matters because it tends to disrupt the type of broad, organized severe weather setup that can drive major outbreaks.
For the rest of May, he said he does not see major severe weather outbreaks developing. That does not mean storms disappear, but it does mean the atmosphere is not currently lining up in the classic way needed for widespread, high-end severe weather across the central United States.
“What this means for our weather is that severe weather, at least major severe weather outbreaks, are unlikely during this time period,” Schuster said.

Still, he warned that severe storms can form on smaller scales, especially with moisture continuing to stream out of both the Pacific and the Gulf. He said the setup still allows for mesoscale severe weather, which can be difficult to forecast more than about a day in advance.
That distinction is important. Large outbreak systems usually show up clearly in models days ahead of time, with strong low pressure, obvious wind fields, and large warm sectors. Mesoscale severe weather is more local and more conditional, which means a damaging storm day may not look impressive far in advance but can still become dangerous for the communities that end up under the storms.
Schuster said the past year has featured many synoptic storm systems, meaning large-scale low pressure systems that helped produce major severe weather outbreaks. This new pattern is different, and in some ways more frustrating, because it may look calmer while still carrying localized risk.
Storm Chances Shift Toward The East
Looking ahead, Schuster said the next organized risk of severe storms should shift toward the Ohio Valley and parts of the East Coast, where thunderstorms may become strong enough to produce damaging wind gusts and hail.
He said storms may develop after lunchtime around areas such as Indianapolis, Columbus, Ohio, and Pittsburgh, with the main concern being downburst winds and hail around quarter size, with isolated larger hail possible in stronger storms.
As those storms move south and east later in the day, Schuster said they may not produce anything highly significant, but they could still knock down small trees, break branches, and cause scattered power outages in parts of Kentucky and Virginia.
The wind threat in a setup like that can be easy to underestimate because it may not come with the same level of public attention as a major tornado day. But for people in the path of a strong downburst, the impact can still be immediate, with trees coming down, power blinking out, and travel becoming messy very quickly.
Schuster said storms should weaken later at night, reducing the overall risk as the day ends.
Thursday Looks Lower-End, But Not Storm-Free
By Thursday, Schuster said thunderstorm chances return across parts of the Great Plains and the Southeast, although he believes the day has the lowest chance of organized severe weather among the next few days.
There may still be pocket-change-sized hail in parts of Oklahoma if storms can organize, and some damaging wind gusts cannot be ruled out. However, Schuster said the tornado threat on Thursday looks like the lowest of the three-day stretch.

Thursday night into early Friday morning also looks fairly quiet for most of the lower 48, according to Schuster.
That quieter stretch is part of what makes the broader pattern so unusual. Late May normally keeps forecasters watching for more obvious severe weather signals, but Schuster said the final days of the month are not showing much in the way of organized outbreak potential.
He said there is at least a chance of severe storms across the High Plains over the weekend, including areas such as Wyoming, South Dakota, and Nebraska, where hail and wind storms may develop with perhaps a low tornado risk. For now, though, he said he is not seeing anything especially organized.
Florida Rain And A Weak Tropical Signal
Schuster also noted that some forecast models have hinted at possible tropical development near Florida this weekend into early next week, though he said the National Hurricane Center did not have any development area outlined at the time of his forecast.
If anything were to form, Schuster said he believes it would likely be weak, and the bigger impact would be rain for Florida.
That rainfall may actually be useful, he said, because Florida needs rain. In that sense, the same strange pattern that is limiting major severe weather elsewhere could still help deliver needed moisture to parts of the Southeast.
Schuster also pointed out that one major computer model, the GFS, was showing very little for the first two weeks of June, which he said was unusual because long-range models often like to show larger storm systems. He said that will almost certainly change, and he expects severe weather to occur during the first half of June, even if the model does not currently show much.
The European model, by contrast, still showed some increase in activity later in the first week of June, and Schuster said he believes that kind of uptick is more likely.
Comfortable Temperatures Add To The Odd Setup
Beyond storms, Schuster said the temperature pattern is also unusual for late May, with much of the country experiencing conditions that are fairly comfortable for the season.
He said the Southeast remains humid, which is normal this time of year, but much of the Midwest and other regions should see temperatures that are warm without being extreme. By Friday morning, he said parts of the Ohio Valley and Northeast could wake up to lows in the 40s and 50s, which he described as very comfortable for late May.

Along the West Coast and into areas such as Utah and Idaho, temperatures are expected to be chilly as the pattern holds.
Schuster said the late-week and weekend pattern should continue to feel unusually pleasant in many areas, with not much severe weather in the forecast. For people who follow spring weather closely, that may feel almost suspicious. A quieter map in late May can be welcome, but it is also strange enough to get attention.
“This is one of the quietest weather patterns I think I’ve ever covered in the month of May in the history of this channel,” Schuster said, noting that he has been doing national weather coverage for nearly five years.
A Quiet Pattern That Still Deserves Attention
Schuster said he is enjoying the quieter weather personally, but he also made clear that the pattern is not simple. It is quiet in terms of major outbreaks, yet still unsettled enough to bring rounds of thunderstorms to many areas.
That is the kind of forecast that can lull people into thinking there is nothing to watch, when the actual risk is more scattered and local. A major outbreak may not be on the board, but one severe storm can still damage property, knock out power, or produce dangerous hail and wind in a single community.
The larger story is that the atmosphere has flipped away from what many people expect in late May. Tornado Alley is not dominating the forecast in the usual way, Oklahoma may end the month with a historically quiet tornado record, and the country is settling under a blocky pattern that may keep the big severe setups suppressed for several more days.
For Schuster, that is exactly why the forecast is so interesting. It is not the loudest kind of severe weather pattern, but it is unusual enough to matter, and it shows how quickly the atmosphere can move from a classic spring setup into something far stranger.
