Meteorologist Max Schuster says a dangerous severe weather pattern is beginning to take shape across the United States, with multiple storm systems expected to bring large hail, damaging winds, flooding rain, and at least some tornado risk over the next several days.

In a new forecast for Max Velocity – Severe Weather Center, Schuster said the jet stream is shifting in a way that will allow repeated storm systems to interact with warm, humid air. That setup, he warned, could create an active stretch of severe weather that becomes more intense as next week approaches.

“A major severe weather pattern is coming and it’s going to be very dangerous,” Schuster said at the start of the forecast, describing a pattern that may bring repeated impacts across some of the same areas rather than one isolated round of storms.

The timing matters because several regions that had a quieter May are now being pulled back into the severe weather zone. Schuster said places such as Chicago, Milwaukee, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and parts of the Great Lakes have not seen much severe activity recently, but that may begin changing now.

This is not just a routine summer storm forecast. The concern is that the atmosphere appears to be setting up for more than one round, and the later rounds may become more organized if the jet stream, low-level winds, and instability line up in the wrong place.

Friday’s Risk Shifts Into the Midwest

For today, Friday, Schuster said the severe weather focus shifts into the Midwest, with a broad slight risk stretching from northern Kansas into Omaha, Des Moines, and far western Wisconsin. A wider marginal risk reaches farther east into parts of Indiana, Ohio, and Michigan.

According to Schuster, the main concern today is damaging wind, but large to very large hail is also possible, especially from Nebraska into Iowa. He said a few initial supercells near Omaha, Des Moines, and south of Sioux Falls could produce hail as large as baseballs before storms grow into a stronger line.

The Storm Prediction Center, Schuster noted, had already mentioned that an enhanced risk for damaging winds could be introduced if confidence grows in a more organized line of thunderstorms. For people in Iowa and Nebraska, he advised securing outdoor items, including trampolines, because winds could become strong enough to send loose objects flying.

Schuster also said the tornado risk today is not zero. He described the setup as conditional, meaning it depends heavily on how storms from earlier rounds leave behind boundaries and pockets of spin in the atmosphere.

One feature he is watching closely is a possible mesoscale convective vortex, a small area of rotation left behind by previous thunderstorm complexes. If that forms and moves into the right environment, Schuster said it could help produce a low-end tornado threat in parts of Illinois, Wisconsin, and eastern Iowa.

That is why he specifically mentioned places such as Chicago, Milwaukee, Peoria, and Springfield as areas that should stay alert. The risk is still uncertain, he said, but the ingredients are close enough that people should pay attention to updated outlooks and warnings.

Damaging Winds Could Become the Main Threat

The main round of Friday severe weather is expected to build during the mid-to-late afternoon and continue into the evening. Schuster said storms may begin firing from around Kearney, Nebraska, toward Minneapolis, with damaging wind and hail becoming the main hazards as the activity organizes.

Although some models show discrete supercells, Schuster said he personally expects many of the storms to upscale quickly. In plain terms, that means individual storms may merge into a line faster than they can remain isolated, which can lower the tornado risk but increase the damaging wind risk.

That tradeoff should not be viewed as good news. Schuster warned that a powerful line of thunderstorms can sometimes produce damage that is more widespread than a brief tornado, especially when wind speeds reach the 60 to 85 mph range.

He said those stronger winds could affect areas near Omaha, Des Moines, Davenport, and Rockford during the mid-to-late afternoon into the early overnight hours. Those kinds of gusts can bring down trees, damage power lines, and make travel dangerous in a hurry.

This is where many people make a mistake. They hear “damaging winds” and think of a loud thunderstorm, but winds near hurricane strength can turn patio furniture, trash bins, and trampolines into hazards, while also making driving difficult on open roads.

Schuster’s advice was straightforward: if you are in the Midwest risk zone, take the severe wind threat seriously and secure anything outside before storms arrive.

Saturday Brings the Great Lakes Back Into the Storm Zone

By Saturday, Schuster said the severe weather threat is expected to shift into the Great Lakes region, including parts of Ohio, Michigan, Pennsylvania, and New York. A slight risk is already in place for that region, with a larger marginal risk reaching into parts of the Northeast.

He said the main threat Saturday should again be damaging wind, largely because the lower-level flow may come more from the west rather than the southwest. That pattern is less favorable for a more widespread tornado threat, but it can still support strong thunderstorm lines.

Schuster said large hail, frequent lightning, and disruptive afternoon storms are all on the table from Indianapolis and Springfield, Illinois, into Cleveland, Detroit, Buffalo, and Pittsburgh. He also said an isolated tornado cannot be ruled out with the most intense storm, even if tornadoes are not expected to be the main hazard.

For areas that have had a quieter late spring, Saturday’s setup may feel like a sudden return to peak storm season. Schuster pointed out that Ohio and Pennsylvania have not seen much severe weather over the last 35 days, but this pattern is now bringing the risk back.

That can be a problem because quiet stretches tend to lower public awareness. People get used to calm weather, start planning outdoor events without checking the forecast, and may not react as quickly when warnings begin to appear again.

Schuster’s message was not to panic, but to prepare. Saturday may bring storms across a wide area, and afternoon plans from the Midwest to the Great Lakes could be interrupted quickly if storms organize faster than expected.

Next Week Could Bring a Bigger Severe Weather Outbreak

The most concerning part of Schuster’s forecast comes early to mid next week, when he said the jet stream may flip into a much more favorable pattern for larger severe weather events. He described a deep dip in the jet stream across the West and Great Plains, with low pressure over areas near Salt Lake City and Spokane and strong southerly to southwesterly flow spreading across a broad part of the central United States.

Schuster said the European AI model is showing a large area of stronger flow from New Mexico and Texas all the way north into Minnesota. If that setup verifies, he said, the early to middle part of next week could bring a severe weather outbreak and possibly even a tornado outbreak.

The exact placement is still uncertain. Some models keep the low pressure farther west, which could reduce the overall impact for the Midwest and Great Lakes, while others bring it farther east, which would make the event more concerning for a larger population area.

“At the bare minimum, this is something we’re keeping an eye on,” Schuster said, adding that it may be the next major severe weather outbreak after a stretch of relatively few big events over the last 45 days.

This is the part of the forecast that deserves close attention over the weekend. Long-range severe weather signals can shift a lot, but when multiple ingredients begin showing up several days in advance, it is usually a sign that forecasters will be watching the pattern carefully.

For now, the message is that next week may not be just another round of scattered storms. If the storm system trends stronger and farther east, a much larger severe weather zone could develop across the Plains, Midwest, or Great Lakes.

While the central and northern United States deal with severe storms, Schuster said Florida faces another problem: persistent tropical downpours, especially around Miami. He said parts of the Miami area could pick up 5 to 7 inches of rain over the next several days as showers and downpours continue.

Schuster joked that people may “literally have to get a boat” to get where they are going, but the underlying point was serious. Repeated heavy rain in urban areas can quickly overwhelm drainage systems, flood streets, and stall vehicles.

Unlike severe thunderstorms that may pass through in a line, South Florida’s risk is more about repeated rainfall and slow-moving downpours. That kind of setup can become dangerous because flooding may build over time, especially in low-lying areas and neighborhoods that already have poor drainage.

Elsewhere, Schuster said rainfall totals across much of the country may not be especially impressive over the next seven days, though Omaha, Des Moines, and areas near Maryville could receive heavier amounts during today’s severe storms. The Southeast could see a general half inch to 1.5 inches of rain, while the Northeast may see lower totals in many areas.

The overall pattern is split between two different hazards: severe storms in the central and northern states, and flooding rain in South Florida. Both can become dangerous in different ways, and both require people to pay attention to local alerts rather than relying only on a national overview.

Schuster closed the forecast by also mentioning the possibility of northern lights due to a geomagnetic storm, but he warned that anyone near thunderstorms should not be outside sky-watching. “When thunder roars, go indoors,” he said, reminding viewers that lightning safety still comes first.

For the next several days, the main story is the storm pattern itself. Two large systems are moving fast through the forecast window, and Schuster’s newest information suggests the weather may become more active, more widespread, and possibly more dangerous as the country heads into next week.
