Meteorologist Max Schuster of Max Velocity – Severe Weather Center is warning that a major shift in the nation’s weather pattern is beginning to take shape, bringing a difficult mix of extreme heat and repeated severe thunderstorm threats across large parts of the United States during the first week of July.
In his latest forecast, Schuster described the developing setup as a “ring of fire” pattern, a weather arrangement that could keep dangerous heat locked over much of the country while sending disturbances around the northern edge of that heat dome. Those disturbances, he said, could repeatedly spark damaging storms from the northern Plains into the Midwest and Great Lakes.
The result may be one of the busiest stretches of summer weather so far, with damaging winds, very large hail, flash flooding, and tornadoes all possible in different areas over several consecutive days. At the same time, a wide section of the country is expected to deal with heat indices that could climb into the 100s and, in some places, approach 115 degrees.
A Heat Dome With Storms Around The Edge
Schuster explained that the setup involves strengthening high pressure across the Southeast, which will push very hot and humid air northward from the Gulf of Mexico. A strong low-pressure system farther north, near Montana and Saskatchewan, is expected to interact with that heat and moisture.

That combination is important because the high-pressure ridge will create intense heat beneath it, while the northern edge of the ridge becomes a favored zone for repeated storms. In weather terms, the atmosphere can become highly unstable along that boundary, allowing powerful thunderstorm clusters and supercells to develop when the right disturbances move through.
The phrase “ring of fire” may sound dramatic, but the setup itself is fairly easy to understand. The intense heat acts like a large dome over part of the country, while storms tend to travel around the edges where cooler air, stronger winds, and moisture collide. That can make the weather feel relentless for people living near that boundary, especially when storms return night after night.
Schuster said the pattern could lead to a very active stretch across the central Plains, northern Plains, Midwest, Great Lakes, and parts of the Ohio Valley. He also warned that some communities may see severe weather on more than one day.
Monday Could Bring A Dangerous Start
The first major severe weather concern of the work week is expected to develop Monday, especially from parts of the Dakotas and Minnesota into Wisconsin and Michigan’s Upper Peninsula.
According to Schuster, a large slight-risk area was already in place stretching from northeast Nebraska through Sioux Falls, Minneapolis, Wisconsin, and the Upper Peninsula. He said all types of severe weather could be possible, including damaging wind gusts, very large hail, and tornadoes.

Damaging winds between 60 and 70 mph were among the main concerns. Schuster also said storms that develop during the afternoon and evening could produce hail larger than baseballs, particularly near Sioux Falls, western Minnesota, Fargo, and Grand Forks.
The tornado threat is more uncertain, but that does not mean it should be ignored. Schuster said the placement of the low-pressure system will matter greatly. If it shifts farther south than expected, Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota, and perhaps western Wisconsin could face a much more dangerous outbreak.
If the system stays farther north, the greatest threat may remain closer to the Minnesota-Canada border. That uncertainty is a reminder that severe weather forecasts often depend on small changes in the atmosphere, especially when forecasters are trying to pinpoint where storms will break through a warm layer of air aloft.
Schuster pointed to the possibility of extreme instability across Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Iowa, with some forecast values nearing 5,000 joules per kilogram. That is a sign of an atmosphere containing large amounts of energy for thunderstorms, and it helps explain why forecasters are watching Monday so closely.
He said a “sneaky strong tornado threat” could emerge later in the day from Sioux Falls and Omaha toward Minneapolis if storms are able to form in the right environment. While the exact storm development remains uncertain, the ingredients Schuster described are the kind that can create a serious problem quickly.
Tuesday Shifts The Risk Eastward
By Tuesday, Schuster expects the severe weather threat to shift farther south and east, with Wisconsin, eastern Minnesota, and Michigan’s Upper Peninsula among the areas that could be at risk.
He said damaging winds, large hail, and an enhanced tornado threat could all be on the table. The highest tornado concern may be near the surface low, which is expected to be somewhere around Wisconsin and eastern Minnesota before extending toward the Upper Peninsula.

The forecast also includes the potential for thunderstorms to develop across Nebraska and South Dakota during the early morning hours, with damaging winds becoming a concern as storms form and organize.
Later Tuesday, Schuster said storms may develop over northern Wisconsin and eastern Minnesota before growing into an intense cluster during the evening. Areas near Wausau and Marquette could see a particularly rough stretch if the forecast trend holds.
He noted that any supercells forming ahead of the main thunderstorm cluster could have an elevated tornado risk. One or two tornadoes may be possible, and Schuster said he would not rule out a stronger tornado if the environment becomes favorable enough.
This is one of the more fascinating parts of the pattern because the danger is not tied to one single storm system racing across the country. Instead, the same broad setup may keep producing new rounds of weather as small disturbances move around the heat ridge. That can make the week feel less like one event and more like a cycle of repeated threats.
Storm Lines Could Continue Through Thursday
Schuster said the middle and latter part of the work week may remain active across the Midwest, central Plains, and northern Plains, with Wednesday and Thursday standing out as days to watch.
By Wednesday, the earlier storm cluster may weaken during the morning, but another line of thunderstorms could form across the Midwest later in the day. Schuster noted that July often brings organized thunderstorm lines to the Plains and Midwest, and this week may follow that familiar summer pattern.
He said the European model has been consistently showing several potential lines of thunderstorms during the middle and end of the work week. If those lines organize as forecast, they could bring widespread damaging winds over long distances.
Schuster also raised the possibility of a derecho-type event on Wednesday or Thursday. A derecho is a long-lived and intense line of thunderstorms that can produce widespread destructive straight-line wind damage over a very large area.
That possibility remains uncertain, but it shows why people across the Midwest and northern Plains should not treat the early-week storms as the entire story. The pattern may keep reloading, particularly as westerly flow strengthens after the main low-pressure system moves away.
Friday may be somewhat less significant, according to Schuster, although more storms could still form over Nebraska and the Dakotas before pushing eastward into the Midwest.
Extreme Heat Adds Another Major Threat
While severe storms may draw the most attention, the heat could be just as dangerous for a much larger number of people.
Schuster said the developing ridge will pull humid Gulf air northward and create heat indices between 100 and 115 degrees across the Mississippi River Valley, Midwest, Ohio Valley, and parts of the East Coast from Monday through Wednesday.

He specifically highlighted forecast heat index values around 100 in Chicago, 108 in Minneapolis, 106 in Davenport and Memphis, and 109 in Nashville. Tuesday is expected to bring another brutal round of heat, while Wednesday may offer little relief.
The heat may also linger into the Fourth of July weekend. Schuster said the pattern could continue through at least July 4, with St. Louis potentially reaching a heat index near 106 again later in the week.
This kind of heat is easy to underestimate because it often builds gradually. Unlike a tornado warning or a severe thunderstorm alert, extreme heat does not always feel urgent until people have already spent too much time outside, lost access to air conditioning, or become dehydrated.
Schuster urged viewers to check on elderly people and others who may be sensitive to heat. That advice matters because prolonged heat can affect people who are not outdoors for long periods, especially those without reliable cooling, people with health problems, and those working outside.
An Unsettled Fourth Of July Outlook
The weather picture becomes more uncertain as the country approaches the Fourth of July, but Schuster said the European model has continued to suggest the possibility of stormy conditions around the holiday.
He said the model has been showing the potential for lines of thunderstorms and a generally messy weather day, though the GFS model has not shown the same level of concern. That disagreement means the forecast is far from settled.
Still, the early signal is enough to keep an eye on the holiday outlook, especially for people planning outdoor gatherings, travel, fireworks displays, or long drives across the Plains and Midwest.
For now, the larger message from Schuster’s forecast is clear: the coming week may bring one of the sharpest weather shifts of the summer, with dangerous heat building over broad areas and repeated severe storms riding along its northern edge.
The ring of fire pattern does not guarantee that every location will see severe weather, but it creates the type of environment where storms can become intense fast and return repeatedly.
