A highly unusual summer weather pattern is expected to produce a dangerous combination of potentially historic flooding in Texas, renewed severe weather across the Midwest and East, and another round of intense heat before a temporary cooldown reaches parts of the Great Lakes and Northeast.

Meteorologist Max Schuster, host of the Max Velocity – Severe Weather Center, said the broader setup is unlike anything typically seen in mid-July, with deep tropical moisture feeding a prolonged flood threat while a massive high-pressure system helps steer repeated disturbances around its edges.

Although the rare severe weather outbreak that first drew attention to northern New England has moved past, the same atmospheric pattern is expected to remain active through the rest of the week, with the most immediate danger shifting toward central and southwest Texas.

Schuster warned that some areas could receive more than a foot of rain, while isolated locations may approach two feet if the heaviest bands remain over the same communities through Wednesday night and into Thursday.

The greatest concern Wednesday centers on a broad corridor that includes Del Rio, Eagle Pass, Uvalde, Crystal City, Junction, Kerrville, Fredericksburg, and areas west of San Antonio.

Schuster said deep moisture from the Gulf of Mexico is being drawn into Texas by strong low-level winds, while an upper-level disturbance remains positioned in a way that allows thunderstorms to repeatedly develop over the same region.

This type of setup can produce what meteorologists call training, in which one heavy storm follows another along nearly the same path. When the ground is already saturated, each new round of rain runs off more quickly into roads, creeks, rivers, and low-lying communities.

Rainfall rates may reach one to two inches per hour in the strongest storms, and Schuster said the flood threat could become catastrophic during the morning and continue well into the evening.

He warned that the danger may extend beyond flooded streets and stalled vehicles, with dam failures and rapidly rising waterways possible if the highest rainfall totals verify.

“There could easily be several catastrophic flooding events,” Schuster said.

The word “catastrophic” should not be treated as routine forecast language. In this context, it describes a situation in which water may rise faster than people can react, particularly overnight or during the morning commute when visibility is poor and roads may already be damaged beneath the surface.

Some Areas Could Approach Two Feet of Rain

Forecast models vary considerably on the exact location of the highest totals, but Schuster said several high-resolution projections show a narrow area with one to two feet of rain.

One model placed the worst conditions north of Uvalde and near the San Antonio region, while another shifted the highest rainfall farther south toward Brackettville. Even with those differences, the guidance consistently suggested a much larger surrounding area could receive six inches or more.

A blended forecast from the National Weather Service was more conservative, showing widespread totals of roughly three to eight inches, but Schuster noted that broad model blends often smooth out smaller areas of extreme rainfall.

That means the regional forecast may appear less alarming than the localized outcome experienced by a town caught beneath repeated thunderstorms.

Schuster also cautioned that the heaviest rain could continue in the Del Rio and Eagle Pass areas into Thursday and possibly Friday, giving swollen rivers and drainage systems little time to recover.

A shift of only 20 or 30 miles could significantly change which communities receive the worst flooding, making it important for residents across the entire risk area to monitor warnings rather than assume the most dramatic forecast totals will remain somewhere else.

The uncertainty concerns placement, not whether heavy rain will occur. A wide section of southwest and central Texas is still expected to experience a serious multi-day event.

Flood Threat May Expand Toward Florida

Texas is not the only region facing concern from excessive moisture.

Schuster said a strong coastal system may develop near the Florida Panhandle and could bring heavy rainfall to the state’s Big Bend region, even though a fully organized tropical storm appears unlikely during the weekend.

The distinction between a tropical cyclone and a moisture-rich coastal low may not matter much to communities dealing with flooding. A poorly organized system can still produce prolonged rain if it moves slowly or remains close to shore.

By early next week, some forecast guidance suggests another surge of tropical moisture may gather near Florida, while other models show little meaningful development.

Schuster said he did not expect a major tropical storm based on the available information, but he remained concerned about the possibility of a significant rainfall event.

This is an important point during hurricane season because public attention often focuses on whether a system receives a name. Flooding can become dangerous long before a disturbance meets the technical requirements for tropical-storm classification.

Severe Weather May Return Friday and Saturday

After the immediate focus on flooding, Schuster turned to another developing storm system that may affect the Midwest and Great Lakes late in the week.

Friday could bring severe thunderstorms to portions of Minnesota, Wisconsin, northern Illinois, and Michigan, although the forecast remains uncertain and the system does not yet appear especially intense.

Some longer-range models have indicated a low-end tornado possibility, but damaging winds and hail may prove to be the more widespread concerns if storms organize.

Schuster advised people across the region to remain aware rather than assume Friday will be a major outbreak.

The difference matters because early forecasts can change quickly when the position of a front, timing of an upper-level disturbance, or amount of available instability shifts by only a few hours.

By Saturday, the storm system is expected to move east, creating a possible severe weather corridor from Tennessee and Kentucky through portions of the Mid-Atlantic and into New England.

The exact placement remains unsettled, with some model runs carrying the system toward Maine and others keeping it farther west or south. That disagreement means the broad threat is becoming visible, but the most affected cities cannot yet be identified with confidence.

Weekend Forecast Remains Highly Uncertain

Sunday is particularly difficult to forecast because models disagree sharply about where the storm will be positioned.

Schuster noted that one set of projections had previously placed the system near Toronto, while later guidance moved it much farther east toward Maine.

Such a large shift over a short period shows why people should avoid treating a single long-range map as a final forecast.

The Storm Prediction Center had previously outlined a Friday severe weather risk in the Mid-Atlantic but later removed it, reducing confidence in an earlier threat for that area.

That does not rule out thunderstorms, but it suggests the stronger severe weather potential may be more focused elsewhere or arrive at a different time.

Additional storm activity may develop across the Midwest and East Coast during the early or middle portion of next week, although Schuster repeatedly emphasized that uncertainty remains high.

The overall pattern appears active, but forecasting a specific severe weather event many days in advance requires more agreement among models than currently exists.

Heat Shifts East Before a Brief Cooldown

While storms and flooding dominate the forecast, intense summer heat remains established across much of the country.

Schuster said the strongest heat over the Northern Plains will gradually shift eastward toward Minneapolis and Chicago by Friday and Saturday, with widespread temperatures in the 80s and 90s and some locations approaching or exceeding 100 degrees.

Phoenix is expected to remain extremely hot, while much of the country continues dealing with above-normal summer temperatures.

The heat has already produced extraordinary readings in Montana, including a reported high of 115 degrees in Glendive and an unofficial 118-degree measurement near Forsyth.

If the higher reading is confirmed, Schuster said it would represent the hottest temperature ever recorded in Montana.

Those values illustrate the strength of the high-pressure system influencing the national pattern. The same ridge producing extreme heat can also redirect storm systems and concentrate severe weather along its northern and eastern edges.

By Sunday, a cold front moving out of Canada may bring some relief to the Great Lakes and Northeast, lowering afternoon temperatures by roughly five to 15 degrees in certain areas.

The break is not expected to last long, however, as heat begins rebuilding across the Southern Plains early next week, with Dallas once again approaching 100 degrees.

A Rare Pattern Producing Several Hazards at Once

Schuster described the week as rare not because of one isolated event, but because several unusual hazards are occurring within the same large-scale pattern.

Historic severe weather developed unusually far north, Texas now faces a potentially extreme rainfall event, and additional storms may spread from the Midwest toward the East Coast while record-level heat remains entrenched across parts of the country.

Each threat requires a different response.

People in flood-prone parts of Texas should be prepared to move to higher ground, avoid driving through water, and keep emergency alerts active through the night. Residents farther north should watch the evolving Friday and Saturday severe weather forecasts, while those under the heat dome need to limit strenuous activity and recognize the signs of heat illness.

The Texas situation remains the most urgent because repeated rainfall may continue for several days, allowing conditions to deteriorate even during temporary breaks in the storms.

A lull can create a false sense that the event is ending when another band of rain is already forming upstream.

Schuster’s forecast did not suggest that every extreme model total will verify, but it made clear that even the more conservative projections would produce a dangerous event across a large part of the region.

The unusual New England outbreak may have been the first sign of how distorted the pattern had become, but the broader weather story is now moving into a prolonged phase in which flooding, severe storms, and major temperature swings remain possible through the weekend and into next week.
