Meteorologist Finds New Data Confirming This Could Be The Worst Outbreak Of The Summer

Meteorologist Ryan Hall is warning that Wednesday could bring one of the most serious severe weather outbreaks of the summer, with central Illinois and northwest Indiana sitting near the bullseye for intense tornadoes, destructive winds, and very large hail.

In a forecast on the Ryan Hall, Y’all YouTube channel, Hall said the Storm Prediction Center has issued a rare June level four out of five moderate risk for parts of the Midwest, centered over central Illinois into northwest Indiana. He said the setup is not just another scattered storm day, but a full-blown severe weather outbreak with several dangerous ingredients coming together at once.

“This is looking like it’s going to be the real deal,” Hall said.

The highest-risk zone includes places such as Springfield, Peoria, Champaign, and Decatur, but Hall warned that surrounding areas, including Chicago, Indianapolis, Fort Wayne, Davenport, and Columbus, should not relax. The worst ingredients may be focused over central Illinois, but the broader region remains in danger.

A Rare June Setup Takes Shape

Hall said one of the biggest reasons this setup stands out is the strength of the low-pressure system moving into the Great Lakes.

According to Hall, his latest data showed the low dropping to around 990 millibars, and possibly even below that, which he described as close to all-time June records. He said that kind of low-pressure system is very unusual this far south at this time of year.

“We don’t see this kind of low pressure system this far south this time of year,” Hall said.

That matters because a deeper low can help strengthen the winds near the ground and above it. Hall said the low-level winds will be “shocking for mid-June,” especially south of Interstate 80, where the atmosphere may have what he called off-the-charts spin.

That is why he is warning about intense, long-track, and potentially violent tornadoes.

The language is strong, but Hall’s reasoning is clear: this is not just about storms forming in warm, humid air. It is about storms forming in an environment where wind, moisture, instability, and low cloud bases may all work together in a way that raises the ceiling for dangerous tornadoes.

Timing Depends On The Morning Storms

Hall said the day will likely begin with a morning cluster of storms developing between about 4 and 6 a.m., moving out of eastern Iowa and into northern Illinois through the early afternoon.

That early cluster is one of the biggest wild cards in the forecast.

If it leaves behind thick clouds and cooler air, Hall said, it could delay or slightly limit the afternoon threat. But if the sun returns and the air heats back up around the Quad Cities into central Illinois, he said that would be like “throwing gasoline on a fire.”

By roughly 2 to 4 p.m., Hall expects explosive supercells to develop along the cold front and race east at 50 to 60 mph. That speed is dangerous on its own because it leaves people with very little time to react after a warning is issued.

Those storms could continue moving east for more than four hours, traveling 250 miles or more after they form.

“If you live anywhere between I-74 and I-70, here’s your homework,” Hall said, telling people to turn their phones off silent, turn weather radios on, and know where they will shelter before warnings arrive.

That kind of preparation matters because the worst time to make a safety plan is after a tornado warning has already been issued. Fast-moving storms shorten the decision window, especially for families, schools, workplaces, and anyone caught on the road.

The Tornado Risk Is The Main Concern

Hall said the Storm Prediction Center has placed a 15% double-hatched tornado risk over the area, which signals concern for strong tornadoes of EF3 strength or higher.

He said the atmosphere will have high storm energy, or what he described as “top tier thunderstorm fuel,” but he emphasized that energy alone is not what creates tornadoes. The bigger concern is the wind shear, with winds changing dramatically with height and helping storms rotate.

Once storms explode, Hall said, they may latch onto that shear, stay discrete, maintain their strength, and draw in even more fuel.

Cloud bases are also expected to be low because the morning storms may keep temperatures from rising too high while moisture surges northward. Hall said low cloud bases can make it easier for funnels to reach the ground.

“I can’t explain to you how perfect this setup is for tornadoes,” Hall said.

The corridor he is watching most closely runs along Interstate 72 through Danville and into central Indiana north of Interstate 70. If the warm front stalls farther south, Hall said the worst of the threat may shift toward the I-70 corridor.

There is one possible limiting factor. Hall said the atmosphere may have so much wind shear that it could disrupt some storms before they fully mature, which would be a fortunate outcome for residents in the risk zone.

Still, he said early discrete supercells are the storms most likely to produce strong, long-track tornadoes if they can mature before being torn apart or merging into a line.

Even if tornadoes do not affect a specific town, Hall warned that Wednesday’s storms can still hit hard.

He said hail up to 2.5 inches across, roughly tennis ball size, is possible, especially in the 30% hatched hail zone from eastern Iowa through central Illinois. He urged people in that area to move vehicles into garages or under sturdy cover before the afternoon storms arrive.

“Hail that size will crack the glass on your car,” Hall said, adding that it can also damage roofs in minutes.

As storms grow upscale later in the day, Hall said the bigger story may become widespread damaging wind. The Storm Prediction Center has a 30% hatched wind area in place, which Hall said increases confidence in widespread 75 mph or stronger wind gusts.

He said swaths of 80 mph winds are possible, and those winds can cause damage similar to a weak tornado. Hall told viewers that destructive severe thunderstorm warnings should be treated with the same seriousness as tornado warnings.

That is a good point because people often take tornado warnings seriously but shrug off severe thunderstorm warnings. A fast-moving line with 75 to 80 mph winds can still bring down trees, damage homes, knock out power, and make travel dangerous.

Hall also said the low itself will be strong enough to create southwest wind gusts of 40 to 50 mph during the day, even away from thunderstorms. Those gradient winds could knock out power before the main storms arrive.

Kansas And Missouri Should Not Ignore Their Own Threat

Hall said the Illinois and Indiana setup will not be the only severe weather issue on Wednesday.

A separate round of severe storms may develop from southeast Kansas into Missouri, where the low-level wind shear will be weaker and cloud bases will be higher. Because of that, the tornado threat is lower than farther east, but Hall said scattered supercells may still form by mid to late afternoon along the cold front.

Extreme energy ahead of the front could support very large hail and damaging winds, with microbursts possibly producing gusts over 75 mph.

“This area is a little removed from the strongest low-level winds, but there’s still enough spin out there to support an isolated tornado or two as well,” Hall said.

He warned Kansas City and Springfield not to let the larger Illinois outbreak steal all of their attention, because storms in their own area could still be dangerous.

This is one of the harder parts of communicating a large outbreak. The highest-risk area gets most of the focus, but lower-probability zones can still produce dangerous storms, and people outside the main bullseye may let their guard down too early.

Gulf Coast Flooding Adds Another Major Threat

While the Midwest faces severe storms, Hall said a life-threatening flood threat is unfolding along the Gulf Coast due to Potential Tropical Cyclone One.

He said tropical storm watches have been issued for parts of the upper Texas coast, including Galveston, Matagorda, and Brazoria counties, as the system is likely to become the first tropical storm of the year around the same time the Midwest outbreak unfolds.

Hall said wind and storm surge are not expected to be the main problems, although some coastal areas could see 2 to 4 feet of surge that may worsen flooding near rivers and along the coast. The biggest danger is rain.

According to Hall, the Weather Prediction Center has a level three moderate risk of flooding stretching across multiple days, beginning near Houston and southwest Louisiana before shifting northeast into Louisiana, Mississippi, and central Alabama by Thursday.

“We could see another 4 to 10 inches of rain through early Thursday on a ground that’s already just been absolutely worked over,” Hall said.

He also warned that tropical moisture could produce brief tornadoes and waterspouts from Sabine Lake toward St. Landry Parish.

Thursday Pushes The Threat East

By Thursday, Hall said the same powerful system will move into the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast, bringing another severe weather risk from Kentucky and northern Tennessee through Washington, Baltimore, Philadelphia, and toward the coast.

The tornado threat should be lower than Wednesday, likely around 2% to 5%, though Hall said a focused area could be upgraded if conditions line up. The main concern appears to be damaging straight-line winds of 60 to 70 mph in dense urban corridors.

Hall said the setup has the look of a classic long-track June wind event and even raised the possibility that a derecho could be discussed, though he said the exact evolution remains uncertain.

He also pointed to Massachusetts and New Hampshire as areas to watch if sunshine returns after morning rain, because that could create a slightly better tornado chance in parts of New England.

“If you live along I-95, Thursday afternoon’s commute is going to be ugly,” Hall said, urging people to plan to be off the roads before the sky darkens.

Hall said the severe pattern may continue into the weekend, with a new threat already taking shape over the central Plains.

The Storm Prediction Center has a 15% severe risk for Saturday across parts of Kansas and Nebraska, including Kansas City and Omaha. Hall said another wave of energy may come out of the Rockies and spin up a surface low over the high Plains, pulling rich Gulf moisture north again.

Storms may develop from late Saturday afternoon into the overnight hours, and with deep moisture still in place, any storms that form could become heavy rain producers.

The Gulf Coast and Southeast may also remain stuck in a multi-day flooding threat as tropical moisture lingers.

“The atmosphere seems to be stuck on repeat,” Hall said.

For now, the most urgent concern is Wednesday across Illinois, Indiana, and nearby states, where the combination of a rare June low-pressure system, extreme instability, strong wind shear, low cloud bases, and fast storm motion could make this one of the most dangerous severe weather days of the summer.

Hall’s warning is simple: this is not the kind of setup to watch casually. People in the risk zones need shelter plans, multiple ways to receive warnings, and a serious understanding that once storms fire, they may move too fast to wait and see.
