Meteorologist Max Schuster is warning that a dangerous severe weather pattern is taking shape across the United States, with the most serious risk expected from Tuesday through Thursday across parts of the Northern Plains, Midwest, Great Lakes, and Ohio Valley.
In a forecast for Max Velocity – Severe Weather Center, Schuster said the setup could become one of the most dangerous weather patterns the country has seen in months, with several rounds of storms capable of producing destructive winds, giant hail, and significant tornadoes.
Schuster said a powerful storm system is expected to interact with rich Gulf moisture and intense wind shear, creating an atmosphere that may become primed for explosive thunderstorm development.
“It is looking like a really wild week of severe weather,” Schuster said.
Tuesday Brings A Higher-End Severe Risk
Schuster said Tuesday is expected to bring a much more serious severe weather threat, especially across the central and northern Plains into the Midwest.
According to Schuster, the Storm Prediction Center had a large level three out of five enhanced risk in place for North Dakota, South Dakota, and northwestern Minnesota, while forecasters had already mentioned that a moderate risk could be possible if the setup trends worse.

That possible upgrade, he noted, may not simply be driven by wind or hail. It could be driven by the tornado threat.
Schuster said all hazards of severe weather are on the table, including damaging winds, very large hail, and tornadoes. He pointed to two likely lines of thunderstorms that could produce wind gusts of 60 to 85 mph, along with a very high chance of giant hail across parts of North Dakota.
Around Bismarck and Jamestown, Schuster said there was a 45 percent chance within 25 miles for very large hail, which is a major signal for people with cars, homes, crops, or livestock exposed to the weather.
The more concerning part of the day, however, may be the tornado risk.
Schuster said a large 10 percent hatched tornado risk was in place for areas including Bismarck, Minot, Grand Forks, and Fargo, meaning a few stronger tornadoes could be possible if storms evolve the right way.
“You’re going to want to make sure you are staying on high alert,” Schuster said while discussing the northern Plains threat.
Tornado Outbreak Potential Depends On Storm Mode
Schuster explained that Tuesday’s tornado risk will depend heavily on whether storms remain discrete, meaning more isolated and able to rotate on their own, or quickly merge into a larger line.
He said storms could begin firing as early as 3 to 4 p.m. in far western South Dakota between Rapid City and Bismarck, initially producing damaging winds. The big question, he said, is whether those storms stay separated long enough to take advantage of the strong wind shear in place.

“If they do stay discreet, the tornado threat is going to be very elevated,” Schuster said.
He also noted that some models placed the best overlap of discrete supercells and low-level wind shear farther north into Manitoba, with a possible tornado outbreak there and perhaps into North Dakota as well.
That uncertainty is important because severe weather forecasting often turns on small details that matter a lot by the time storms form. A few dozen miles can separate a mostly wind-driven event from one where long-track tornadoes become possible.
Schuster said that even if the strongest tornado threat shifts north, damaging winds, large to very large hail, and a few tornadoes will still be possible elsewhere, including parts of Nebraska and southern South Dakota.
Storms may continue moving toward Omaha, Sioux City, and Sioux Falls later in the evening, before pushing toward Minneapolis and Rochester overnight with isolated damaging winds still possible.
Wednesday Could Be A Significant Midwest Outbreak
Schuster said Wednesday may bring an even broader and more concerning severe weather threat across the Midwest.
The Storm Prediction Center’s enhanced risk had shifted east in the latest outlook, according to Schuster, and included Minneapolis, areas near Des Moines, northwestern Illinois, and almost all of Wisconsin.
He said Chicago and Milwaukee were now included in the slight risk area, which was a change from the previous outlook, while Kansas City was also included and much of Michigan was under a marginal threat.

The main hazards Wednesday are expected to include widespread damaging winds, very large hail, and a few strong tornadoes.
Schuster said he would not rule out a long-track tornado depending on storm mode, especially if discrete supercells can remain separate before storms become more linear later in the day.
He called the severe weather threat across the Midwest “very elevated” and said there is a real risk of at least a severe weather outbreak, if not perhaps a tornado outbreak.
By early afternoon, Schuster said storms may begin to fire north of Davenport and near Wausau, producing large to very large hail and damaging winds. He also pointed to elevated significant tornado parameter values across a broad area, which he said suggested at least a medium tornado threat in several zones.
The potential for baseball- to apple-size hail is one of the more alarming details in the forecast. Hail that large can destroy windshields, damage roofs, injure animals, and make being outdoors extremely dangerous, even in places that do not see a tornado.
Discrete Storms May Carry The Greatest Tornado Danger
Schuster said the strongest tornado risk Wednesday would depend on whether storms can stay discrete long enough before merging into a larger line.
He said supercells may begin developing as early as 1 to 2 p.m., initially capable of all hazards, including significant damaging winds, very large hail, and a couple of strong tornadoes.
If they remain separate, Schuster said there would be a legitimate risk of a long-track tornado.
By 6 to 7 p.m., he expects storms to become more organized into a line, shifting the main threat more toward damaging winds. However, any storm that remains discrete would still carry the risk of a strong or possibly large tornado.
By 9 to 10 p.m., Schuster said most storms should be more linear, with a significant damaging wind threat spreading across much of Wisconsin and Iowa, and near Milwaukee and Chicago late Wednesday into early Thursday.
That kind of evolution is common in larger severe weather outbreaks. Early storms may carry the highest tornado risk, while later storms can grow into a broader wind threat that affects more communities at once.
Schuster cautioned that the future radar view was still an early look and would likely change, but he made clear that the ingredients for a higher-end event were present.
Thursday Could Become “Extremely Problematic”
Schuster said Thursday may bring yet another significant severe weather risk, this time with a new storm system moving from the Rockies into the Midwest.
He described the setup as potentially “extremely problematic” because it could bring a surface low pressure system into the region along with very strong low-level winds, creating another environment favorable for rotating storms.

Schuster said an enhanced tornado threat may develop across parts of the Midwest, especially from Milwaukee and Appleton back toward Peoria and Quincy.
The Storm Prediction Center already had an enhanced risk in place for areas including Milwaukee, Chicago, and back toward Columbia, while a large slight risk stretched from Michigan into Oklahoma, according to Schuster’s forecast.
He said storms could begin as early as 2 to 4 p.m. Thursday, with several supercells possible across parts of the Midwest.
Those storms may produce all hazards, including significant damaging winds, large hail, and tornadoes, before continuing into the evening and possibly not ending until the early morning hours Friday.
The concern with a multi-day setup like this is that people can become worn down by repeated alerts. Tuesday may matter most in the northern Plains, Wednesday may matter more in the Midwest, and Thursday may shift the danger again, but every day still needs attention from the people in the risk zones.
Active Pattern May Continue Into Friday
Schuster said the severe weather pattern may not end with Thursday’s storms.
By Friday, he said another risk of severe weather may develop across parts of the Northeast and surrounding areas, including places near Pittsburgh, West Virginia, and Kentucky.

That threat appears lower than the Tuesday-through-Thursday setup, but damaging winds, hail, and a low tornado risk may still be possible.
Schuster said the weekend forecast remains uncertain, but the broader active severe weather pattern does not appear ready to disappear quickly.
His main message throughout the forecast was that people in the risk areas should stay alert, follow newer outlooks as details change, and have ways to receive warnings.
That is especially important because this week’s threats are not limited to one hazard. Some areas may deal with giant hail, others may face significant damaging winds, and some may see an elevated tornado threat if supercells can stay organized.
Schuster’s forecast does not present the week as a guaranteed disaster for every city in the risk zones, but it does point to one of the most active and potentially dangerous severe weather stretches in months. For residents from the northern Plains into the Midwest and Ohio Valley, Tuesday through Thursday may require close attention, especially during the afternoon and evening hours when storms are most likely to intensify.
