A minor rear-end crash at a gas station in Wisconsin turned into a much more serious criminal case after a 23-year-old driver allegedly tried to keep police out of the situation, became increasingly confrontational once officers intervened, and later admitted he had a knife and drugs on him while already under arrest.
The YouTube channel Code Blue Cam reviewed bodycam footage from the Jan. 23, 2024 incident, identifying the driver as Jaylen and describing how what began as a relatively ordinary traffic accident eventually led to multiple criminal charges and a three-year state prison sentence.
According to the channel, Jaylen initially appeared desperate to prevent the other driver from reporting the crash, but an officer was already nearby for an unrelated matter when a witness flagged him down.
A Minor Crash Quickly Turns Into A Police Call
The young woman involved told police that she had stopped at a yield sign in De Pere when Jaylen’s vehicle struck her from behind.
After both drivers pulled into a nearby gas station, she said Jaylen tried to convince her not to call police, telling her that he was uninsured and did not want to go to jail.
The woman said she was underage and uncomfortable handling the situation by herself, especially because Jaylen was pressing her to keep police out of it.
A witness who had been driving behind both vehicles gave officers a similar account.
He said the woman had been moving slowly and waiting for traffic when Jaylen suddenly accelerated and hit her car, then began yelling afterward and trying to discourage her from making a report.
That witness stayed because, he said, the woman appeared frightened and wanted someone else there.
The crash itself did not sound especially complicated. The problem was that Jaylen’s behavior immediately made officers wonder why he was so determined to keep the incident informal.
Jaylen Refuses To Follow Simple Instructions
When an officer arrived, Jaylen repeatedly insisted that he and the other driver already had the situation “under control.”
The officer told him to wait by his vehicle and later instructed him to sit inside it while police sorted out what had happened.
Jaylen argued that the officer could not tell him what to do because he was a citizen, and when he reached into his vehicle to grab his phone, officers became more concerned.
One officer drew a Taser and ordered him to stop moving.
Jaylen then began recording with his phone, raising his voice and challenging the officers while continuing to insist that he had done nothing wrong.
Eventually, police arrested him for disorderly conduct.
At that point, the case still might have remained a relatively minor incident involving a crash and a disorderly conduct arrest.
Instead, according to Code Blue Cam, Jaylen kept making decisions that dramatically worsened his position.
He Tells Officers About A Knife And Drugs
While talking with a sergeant after his arrest, Jaylen suddenly volunteered that he had a knife hidden in his shoe.
He then said he also had “a little bit of dope” concealed on his body.
That disclosure prompted officers to search him more thoroughly.
The encounter quickly became chaotic as Jaylen repeatedly demanded that officers put his socks back on while they searched his shoes and legs for the knife he had just admitted carrying.
He yelled, cursed and accused the officers of racism, at one point asking whether they would treat a white man the same way.
Officers responded that the situation was about his behavior rather than his race.
Jaylen also repeatedly insisted he was not resisting while simultaneously refusing instructions, shouting at officers and demanding that they handle his clothing in a particular way.
The contradiction is one of the most striking parts of the footage.
He seemed focused on documenting what he believed was mistreatment, but every additional argument and admission gave officers more information and more reasons to keep the situation under tighter control.
Officers Say His Behavior Continued At The Hospital
During transport, Jaylen later complained that his arm was injured.
Police took him to a hospital for medical clearance, where staff examined him before he was returned to jail.
According to Code Blue Cam, the situation did not calm down there.
The channel said officers reported that Jaylen continued making threatening, vulgar and aggressive comments, including remarks involving officers.
At one point, he also allegedly mentioned making $5,000 by delivering a brick of cocaine.
Whether intended as boasting, provocation or something else, statements like that were hardly likely to improve the situation.
By then, the original rear-end crash had become almost irrelevant compared with the conduct that followed.
That is a recurring lesson in bodycam cases: the initial reason for police contact often ends up being far less serious than what happens after someone decides to escalate the encounter.
Charges Pile Up After The Arrest
Code Blue Cam reported that Jaylen was ultimately charged with two felony counts involving threats of battery against an officer, three counts of bail jumping, two misdemeanor counts of resisting or obstructing an officer, disorderly conduct and an additional bail-jumping count.
He was later released on a $5,000 cash bond.
The case eventually ended through no-contest pleas.
According to the channel, Jaylen was found guilty of both battery-threat offenses, one felony bail-jumping count and one count of resisting or obstructing an officer.
He was sentenced to three years in state prison, followed by another three years of extended supervision.
That is a remarkable outcome for an incident that began with a low-speed traffic collision at a gas station.
The crash itself appears to have been the least serious part of the entire case.
Trying To Avoid Jail Led Directly To Prison
The irony is difficult to miss.
The other driver told police that Jaylen had initially urged her not to report the accident because he did not want to go to jail.
Yet once an officer became involved, Jaylen repeatedly argued with police, refused directions, escalated his behavior, admitted to carrying a concealed knife and drugs, and later continued making aggressive comments after his arrest.
His apparent effort to avoid one problem ended up creating several larger ones.
If his goal at the gas station was simply to keep a minor crash from becoming a police matter, the strategy failed in almost every possible way.
The woman involved had already decided she wanted the incident documented, a witness was willing to describe what he saw, and an officer happened to be nearby.
At that point, cooperation would not necessarily have erased whatever legal or insurance consequences came from the crash, but it likely would have prevented the encounter from becoming what Code Blue Cam ultimately documented.
Instead, the situation moved from a damaged bumper to disorderly conduct, alleged threats, resisting or obstructing charges, bail-jumping allegations and finally a prison sentence.
