A routine traffic stop turned into a chaotic arrest after officers discovered that the driver had a suspended license and an active felony warrant, leading to a physical struggle that became even more complicated when his girlfriend repeatedly argued with police and moved into the middle of the scene.
The encounter, which happened on February 2, 2023, was later featured by the body-camera YouTube channel Midwest Safety, whose narrator said the male suspect, identified as Garrett, ultimately faced multiple felony charges while his girlfriend was also arrested for allegedly interfering with officers.
The footage shows how quickly the situation escalated from expired registration paperwork into a violent confrontation, with police later saying Garrett ran, fought officers, kicked at them, and tried to grab a Taser during the struggle.
The Stop Begins With an Expired Temporary Tag
The encounter started when an officer noticed that the vehicle’s temporary registration had expired months earlier.
The woman in the passenger seat said she owned the car and had not yet completed the paperwork to switch everything over, while Garrett told the officer that he had a driver’s license but did not have it with him.
After getting Garrett’s name and date of birth, officers began checking his information.
A short time later, the tone of the stop changed.
An officer approached the vehicle and told Garrett to step out because his license was suspended.
Garrett questioned why he needed to get out and mentioned that he had a broken finger, but officers continued ordering him to exit.
Moments later, the body-camera footage became chaotic as officers tried to restrain him and Garrett began yelling that they were hurting him.
Officers Say Garrett Ran and Fought Them

One officer warned that he would use a Taser if Garrett continued resisting.

Police, however, treated the contact as an attempt to deprive an officer of a means of protection.
The Midwest Safety narrator later said Garrett was charged with two counts of felony battery on a law enforcement officer, two counts of felony battery with a prior conviction, felony resisting with violence, felony attempting to deprive an officer of means or protection, knowingly driving with a suspended license, and operating an unregistered motor vehicle.
Those charges remain allegations, and the channel emphasized that Garrett is presumed innocent unless proven guilty.
The Felony Warrant Was More Serious Than the Traffic Violation
During the confrontation, Garrett complained that the entire incident had started “over a suspended license.”
An officer immediately corrected him, saying the arrest was also connected to a felony warrant.
Midwest Safety later said it reviewed the warrant and found that it involved allegations of battery with a prior conviction, battery by sudden snatching, felony witness tampering, and false imprisonment.
The channel also said it found Garrett had previously been involved in domestic violence incidents involving the same girlfriend who was present during the stop.
That context does not determine whether he was guilty of the new charges, but it helps explain why officers moved quickly once they confirmed the warrant and why they were not treating the stop as a simple licensing issue.
His Girlfriend Refuses to Stay Back
While officers were struggling with Garrett, his girlfriend repeatedly argued with police and moved toward the confrontation despite being told to stay by the vehicle.
The footage shows officers becoming increasingly frustrated as they ordered her to return to the car and stop interfering.
She insisted that she had a right to speak and repeatedly asked why she would go to jail for standing near her vehicle.
Officers told her that the problem was not her speech but her interference with the arrest.
At one point, she said her daughter was in the car and argued that she could not simply walk away from the vehicle because the child was still inside.
Police later noted that a baby had been left in the back seat during the confrontation.
Eventually, officers placed the woman under arrest as well.
Midwest Safety reported that she was charged with resisting or obstructing.
As with Garrett, that charge is an allegation and does not establish guilt.
Her Mother Arrives and Delivers a Harsh Reality Check
After Garrett was transported to jail, officers contacted the woman’s mother to come to the scene and take custody of the child.
The body-camera footage then captured an unusually blunt family confrontation.
The mother listened as her daughter insisted that police had treated her unfairly and claimed she had been standing near the car when officers grabbed her.
Her mother was not persuaded.
She told her daughter that Garrett’s behavior was the reason police had taken him to jail and said her daughter had made the situation worse by getting involved.
At one point, she reminded her that police had not originally been trying to arrest her.
“You made your own self in this,” the mother said in substance, telling her daughter that she had inserted herself into an arrest that was already underway.
She also rejected the idea that hardship justified the way her daughter had acted.
The mother said she was struggling too and still managed not to behave that way, while also expressing frustration that she had been forced to leave work to deal with the situation.
Midwest Safety’s narrator praised the mother’s reaction, calling it an example of someone telling a difficult truth rather than simply defending a family member.
Midwest Safety Says the Girlfriend Made Her Own Situation Worse
The channel’s narrator said he felt some sympathy for Garrett’s girlfriend because of the apparent problems in the relationship, but argued that rushing to defend him during a police struggle only created a new problem for her.
He pointed to the mother’s comments as the clearest summary of what went wrong.
Garrett was already being detained because of the warrant, and once he allegedly ran and fought officers, the situation became much more serious.
The girlfriend, meanwhile, could have remained near the vehicle and waited for the arrest to finish, but the narrator said she instead became emotionally involved and ended up in handcuffs herself.
That is a fair reading of the footage, although the criminal case still has to be judged on evidence rather than body-camera impressions alone.
