A Seattle parking lot turned chaotic after officers woke a 31-year-old man sleeping inside an Audi and he immediately began ramming vehicles around him, damaging two police cruisers and four civilian cars before becoming stuck and eventually surrendering after a lengthy standoff.
Bodycam footage published by Midwest Safety shows officers initially approaching the December 10, 2024 encounter cautiously because they suspected the Audi might have been stolen and believed the sleeping driver could be impaired. The channel’s narrator later identified the man as Kevin and said the vehicle itself was ultimately confirmed not to be stolen, although officers reportedly found suspected methamphetamine, a meth pipe and mail addressed to different people inside.
What began as a relatively quiet investigation escalated within seconds of officers knocking on the window.
Officers Suspected The Audi Might Be Stolen
Before waking Kevin, officers noticed items covering the dashboard near the vehicle identification number, which immediately raised suspicion.
One officer told nearby residents that he wanted backup before approaching because people in stolen vehicles sometimes flee or may be armed, although he could not see any obvious weapon inside the Audi.
A resident then photographed the VIN, and the return created additional confusion.
The officer said one database response appeared connected to a dealership, while another search produced information about a stolen red Honda Accord from Clark County even though the VIN, plate and vehicle description did not appear to match the Audi in front of them.
Rather than assume the car was stolen, officers decided to treat the vehicle as suspicious while also considering the possibility of DUI.
One officer then recognized something else about the car: he believed he had surveillance video from his own home showing the same Audi involved in stealing his mail roughly a month earlier.
That claim added another possible offense, although it had not yet been fully investigated or confirmed.
Police Try To Box The Car In
Because officers believed Kevin might flee when awakened, they positioned patrol vehicles around the Audi to limit his escape route.
They also discussed where to stand so none of them would be trapped between moving vehicles if he suddenly accelerated.
By the time officers approached the driver’s side, they had several units on scene and were prepared with both lethal and less-lethal options.
They called out to Kevin, told him police were outside and ordered him to exit with empty hands.
When there was no meaningful response, officers moved closer and began banging on the window.
One officer noticed what appeared to be some type of badge hanging around Kevin’s neck, but before they could determine what it was, Kevin woke up.
Then the situation changed almost instantly.
Kevin Begins Ramming Cars Around Him
As officers ordered him out, Kevin put the Audi into motion and began striking vehicles around the parking lot.
Bodycam audio captures officers backing away and warning each other as the Audi crashed into parked cars and patrol vehicles while Kevin tried to maneuver through the blockade.
At one point, officers said the Audi had become high-centered on concrete and wedged against another vehicle, yet Kevin continued attempting to drive.
The narrator later said six vehicles were damaged in total: two police squad cars, a 2018 Chevrolet Cruze, a 2014 Honda Civic, a 2016 Jeep Wrangler and a 2019 Toyota RAV4.
According to Midwest Safety, the combined estimated value of those vehicles was approximately $113,000, though that figure represented the vehicles’ estimated value rather than necessarily the final repair bill.
One officer described Kevin as a serious danger to the public because he continued trying to move the Audi despite the collisions and icy conditions.
Supervisors were contacted about whether officers should pursue him if he managed to break free, but they ultimately decided they would not launch a vehicle pursuit.
Given how quickly the parking lot had already turned into a demolition scene, that choice likely reduced the risk of carrying the danger onto public roads.
Officers Wait Him Out After The Audi Becomes Disabled
Eventually, the Audi appeared too damaged or trapped to go anywhere.
Officers kept their distance because approaching a running vehicle that Kevin was still attempting to move would have placed them directly in harm’s way.
They repeatedly ordered him to shut off the engine and get out.
After several minutes, Kevin finally lowered a window enough to communicate and eventually turned the car off.
Officer Weiss identified himself and explained that several officers were present and that Kevin would not be hurt if he followed instructions.
Weiss also told him that he was holding a 40 mm impact launcher, explaining that it was available only if Kevin refused to comply.
The standoff did not end immediately.
According to the narrator, officers spent roughly another 40 minutes talking to Kevin and gradually persuading him to surrender.
During that time, he asked about a bag he said contained items belonging to his daughter and requested a cigarette.
Officers assured him that his belongings would not be abandoned and continued directing him to keep his hands visible as he stepped out.
A Long Standoff Ends Without More Violence
Kevin eventually emerged from the Audi and slowly walked toward police with his hands raised.
Officers repeatedly reassured him that they would not fire less-lethal rounds if he continued cooperating, while Kevin stopped several times to adjust his clothing and ask officers to move the laser sight away from him.
Once he reached them, Sergeant Simmons thanked him for coming out and asked whether he was experiencing any medical emergency.
Kevin was then advised of his rights and escorted away.
The peaceful end stood in sharp contrast to the first few seconds after he woke up, when officers had gone from cautiously preparing for a suspicious-vehicle investigation to dodging a car smashing through everything around it.
Police Reportedly Find Drugs And Mail Inside
After Kevin was taken into custody, officers began looking more closely at the Audi.
One officer immediately noticed a large quantity of mail and again wondered whether some of it might be connected to the earlier theft from his home.
The narrator said police later confirmed that the Audi was not stolen after all.
However, officers reportedly found suspected methamphetamine, a meth pipe and mail containing different addresses inside the vehicle.
The report discussed by Midwest Safety did not establish whether any of that mail belonged to the officer who believed Kevin had previously stolen from him, so that remained a separate and unresolved issue in the video.
Police also obtained a warrant for Kevin’s blood and had it drawn at a hospital, according to the narrator.
Despite officers initially suspecting DUI and the reported discovery of suspected methamphetamine, the channel said Kevin apparently was not charged with driving under the influence.
Felony Charge Followed The Parking Lot Damage
The narrator said Kevin already had an outstanding warrant for felony domestic-violence harassment when officers encountered him.
In addition to that warrant, he was charged with first-degree felony malicious mischief over the vehicle damage.
He remained presumed innocent unless proven guilty.
The encounter is a good example of how quickly officers’ initial assumptions can change during an investigation. The Audi appeared suspicious and was initially treated as potentially stolen, but that turned out not to be the case; the suspected DUI investigation also did not result in the charge officers first seemed to expect.
What did become impossible to overlook was what happened after Kevin woke up.
Within moments, six vehicles had been hit, two squad cars had been damaged and officers were preparing for the possibility that the Audi might somehow escape the lot.
