A disturbing confrontation outside a McDonald’s in Dania Beach, Florida, has triggered an investigation after video showed a group of middle school-age children punching and surrounding an adult man in the middle of the street, with one witness saying the children “basically jumped an old man.”

WPLG Local 10 reporter Rosh Lowe said the Aug. 21 incident happened near Olsen Middle School and was captured by a parent who had arrived to pick up her children. The footage shows several young people striking the man, while one appears to throw a milkshake toward his face.

The exact circumstances leading up to the fight remain disputed, however, because the school says the adult initiated the physical confrontation, while the mother who recorded the scene says what she saw looked very different.

Parent Says The Children Were Attacking One Man

Yanelle Perez, whose two children attend nearby Olsen Middle School, told Lowe she happened to be at the McDonald’s when the violence unfolded.

She said she did not know what had happened inside the restaurant before the group spilled outside, but what she saw afterward alarmed her enough to begin recording.

“I just see this whole gang of kids, as you can tell in the video, and this one man,” Perez said. “It’s only one man.”

The video shows several children surrounding the adult as the confrontation moves into the roadway, where punches are thrown repeatedly.

Perez also described an older woman nearby appearing to run away from the commotion.

“These kids are just attacking him and you could tell he can’t help himself,” she said. “It’s disgusting.”

The age difference is what makes the footage especially jarring. Viewers might expect a fight involving children to be broken up by adults, yet here the adult appears overwhelmed by the number of younger people around him.

Witness Says Her Children Called It A New Trend

Perez told Lowe that her own children said incidents like this may be connected to a trend among students after school.

“They basically jumped an old man,” she said. “My children saying it’s a new trend that’s happening after school.”

Lowe noted that claim in his report but did not establish exactly what the alleged trend involves or whether law enforcement has confirmed that broader pattern.

That distinction matters because rumors about social-media challenges can spread quickly after dramatic videos circulate, especially when teenagers are involved.

Still, Perez said one of the main reasons she agreed to speak publicly was because she wanted other parents to know what had happened.

“I just feel like parents need to be aware,” she told Lowe.

That concern is understandable. Even if this incident turns out to have started differently than the video suggests, a group confrontation involving middle school students in active traffic creates an obvious risk to everyone nearby.

School Says The Adult Started The Confrontation

Olsen Middle School Principal Janet Giancarli sent parents a message acknowledging that the video was circulating online and confirming that students from the school were involved.

But the school’s description of the encounter differs sharply from Perez’s account.

According to Giancarli, “An adult male approached the students and initiated a physical confrontation outside of the restaurant.”

The principal said the Broward Sheriff’s Office responded and investigated, adding that no one was injured.

She also emphasized that the incident did not happen on school property or during school hours, while saying administrators were continuing to work with law enforcement because students were involved.

“The safety and well-being of our students remain our highest priority,” Giancarli said.

That statement introduces an important complication. A short video can clearly show who is throwing punches at a particular moment without necessarily showing what happened minutes earlier or inside the restaurant.

Perez Disputes The School’s Version

Perez told Lowe she did not believe the adult appeared to be the aggressor during the portion of the incident she witnessed.

“I can’t see that happening,” she said when told about the principal’s account.

According to Perez, the man looked as though he wanted the group to stop.

“He was basically begging them to leave him alone,” she said.

That does not settle what triggered the confrontation, but it shows how differently the same event is being described by the school and the person who recorded part of it.

Lowe was careful to make that uncertainty clear in his report.

He said Local 10 did not know the identity of the adult man and invited him to contact the station so his version of events could be heard.

The station also did not know whether any criminal charges would result from the investigation.

Video Leaves Important Questions Unanswered

The footage itself is dramatic enough to invite instant conclusions, but there are still several major gaps.

It is unclear what happened before Perez started recording, what may have occurred inside the McDonald’s, whether the adult had any earlier physical contact with the students, and how the confrontation escalated into the roadway.

Those unanswered questions are important because the school’s statement specifically claims the man initiated the physical encounter.

At the same time, the recorded portion shows multiple children striking one adult, which raises separate questions about whether any response became excessive regardless of how the argument began.

That is why full surveillance footage, witness interviews and law enforcement findings will matter more than social-media clips alone.

A video can reveal a great deal, but rarely everything.

Investigation Continues

Lowe said authorities were still investigating and that the school intended to continue cooperating with law enforcement.

No charges had been announced at the time of the report, and the adult man had not been publicly identified.

What is already clear is that the confrontation involved children young enough to attend middle school, an adult man, and a scene violent enough that a parent nearby felt compelled to record it and warn others.

The image of children repeatedly striking an adult in the middle of traffic is troubling on its own, regardless of which version of the beginning ultimately proves accurate.

But until investigators establish what led to the fight, the most responsible conclusion is also the least dramatic one: the video shows a serious and chaotic confrontation, while the larger story behind it is still being pieced together.
