A 22-year-old man accused of running through Philadelphia in a disturbing baby doll-style mask, chasing strangers and allegedly asking one woman if she was “ready to die,” is now wanted on assault charges, and authorities believe he may have left Pennsylvania for California or Nevada.
KTLA 5 reporter Lauren Lyster said Philadelphia police and the U.S. Marshals are searching for Zymire Hughes, who investigators say frightened at least 15 people during an early-morning spree on August 12 before eventually slipping away from officers.
Police believe Hughes has a history of traveling between Pennsylvania and the West Coast for work, including trips to the Los Angeles area and Las Vegas, raising the possibility that the wanted suspect may now be headed west.
Police Say More Than A Dozen People Were Targeted
According to Lyster’s report, the series of incidents began shortly after 5 a.m., when a masked man wearing what police described as a creepy baby doll or “Chucky-style” Halloween mask began approaching and harassing random people around downtown Philadelphia.
Investigators believe roughly 15 to 16 people were targeted as the suspect moved through the city, including people on the street and inside businesses.
Philadelphia police said the conduct went far beyond simply wearing a strange costume in public.
One investigator described the suspect as someone who appeared determined to scare people “for no good reason,” while authorities later said the behavior may have been connected to an attempt to gain attention through social media.
The unusual appearance of the mask is what makes the case immediately memorable, but the allegations themselves are much more serious. A frightening costume might begin as a prank, yet chasing strangers and making threats can quickly create a dangerous situation, especially when victims have no way of knowing whether the person approaching them is armed.
Jogger Injured While Fleeing Suspect
The most serious incident happened at about 5:30 a.m. near 1500 JFK Boulevard, where police say a 40-year-old woman was confronted while jogging.
Captain Jason Smith of Philadelphia’s Central Detectives said Hughes allegedly moved in front of the woman, kept one of his hands behind his back and asked whether she was “ready to die.”
When the woman became frightened and turned to run, police said she stumbled and badly injured one of her legs.
The suspect never displayed a weapon during the encounter, according to investigators, and authorities have not reported any other injuries connected to the alleged spree.
Still, the absence of a visible weapon does not make the situation harmless. From the victim’s perspective, someone wearing a disturbing mask, concealing a hand and making a death threat could reasonably appear to present an immediate danger, which helps explain why investigators are treating the incident much more seriously than a Halloween-style scare.
After the woman was injured, police said the masked man fled toward Suburban Station.
Police Identified The Man Behind The Mask
Lyster reported that officers eventually encountered the suspect and told him to remove the mask.
Video released by police showed him complying with that order, giving investigators a clear look at his face, but he still managed to evade officers afterward.
Police then used surveillance footage to trace his movements to several other locations and eventually connected him to an apartment.
Investigators identified him as 22-year-old Zymire Hughes and obtained an active warrant for his arrest.
Authorities described the suspect seen during the incidents as a thin Black male, about 5 feet 8 inches tall, wearing the white baby doll-style Halloween mask with dark hair along with a black-and-blue plaid backpack.
Police have also asked any additional people who believe they were approached or frightened by Hughes to contact investigators, suggesting officers believe the known incidents may not represent the full extent of what happened that morning.
Authorities Suspect Social Media Was A Motive
Philadelphia authorities told KTLA that one possible explanation for the behavior was an attempt to record frightened reactions and turn them into social media content.
“The motivations could possibly include trying to take video of people being terrified for the purpose of attracting attention on social media,” police said.
Investigators, however, said they had not found video from the alleged incidents posted to social media accounts associated with Hughes.
The possibility of a social-media motive adds a particularly strange dimension to the case. Online prank culture has long rewarded videos built around shock and surprise, but this case shows how quickly that idea can collide with criminal law when unsuspecting people believe they are genuinely in danger.
Authorities made clear that simply wearing a frightening mask is not illegal.
What can make the behavior criminal, they said, is using that mask as part of an effort to intimidate, harass, terrorize or assault another person.
Police issued an equally blunt warning to anyone who might see such behavior as entertainment, saying a person may think scaring strangers is funny until they are confronted with “the handcuffs,” “the jail cell” and a jury that does not share the joke.
Suspect Could Be Heading Toward California
The case has now become relevant far beyond Philadelphia because investigators believe Hughes may have already left Pennsylvania.
“We’ve received information he has a tendency to travel back and forth to the West Coast, California, the L.A. area, but also Las Vegas, for employment reasons,” police said in Lyster’s report.
Authorities believe he left Philadelphia several nights before their public appeal and may be deliberately trying to avoid the arrest warrant.
Philadelphia police are now working with the U.S. Marshals to locate him and return him to Pennsylvania.
The district attorney’s office said Hughes faces both misdemeanor and felony assault charges connected with at least one victim, and Lyster reported that he was already on probation for another offense committed in Pennsylvania.
That raises the stakes considerably. What may have started as an alleged attempt to frighten strangers has now turned into a multi-state search involving federal law enforcement.
Police Warn The Public Not To Approach Him
Authorities have emphasized that Hughes should not be approached if he is spotted.
Anyone who believes they see him has been told to contact 911 immediately rather than attempting to confront or detain him.
KTLA anchor Cher Calvin introduced the report by noting that U.S. Marshals were involved in the search, while co-anchor Micah Ohlman said authorities had issued a warrant for the man accused of chasing more than a dozen people near Philadelphia City Hall.
Lyster said local authorities in Southern California had also been contacted because of Hughes’ reported connections to the region.
For now, investigators are continuing to search for him while also looking for any additional victims who may not yet have spoken with police.
