A trespassing call in Dayton, Ohio, turned into a much more serious police response after a man ran from officers, allegedly released a pit bull toward them, and then entered a garage where a woman later said he would not let her leave.
Midwest Safety reported that the March 25, 2025, incident began as a complaint about people staying on nuisance or vacant property, but the situation quickly moved beyond a routine property call once officers tried to identify the people there.
The bodycam footage shows officers speaking with people near a shed or vacant structure when one man, later identified by Midwest Safety as David, began moving away with a pit bull.
One officer warned him to stop and told him the dog needed to go back inside, but within minutes, police were calling out that a white male in a red hoodie was running with a pit bull.
A Trespassing Call Turns Into A Chase
At first, the people on the property told officers they were there because a friend had asked them to stay while he went to work, claiming others had been stealing from the area.
Officers explained that the property had been identified as a nuisance property in the city and said there was no power or water, while the people there insisted someone named Joey owned it and that the building was being fixed.
The exchange grew tense when officers asked for names and identification. One officer told a man he could either start giving information or go to jail, adding that the dog could end up at the pound if the situation continued to escalate.
A woman at the scene also refused to provide her name, telling officers she had done nothing wrong and did not need to identify herself.
As officers tried to sort out who was on the property and why, David moved away, and an officer warned him that he could be charged with obstructing if he did not come back.
The situation changed when he ran.
Dog Released During The Escape
As David fled, officers reported that he was running with a pit bull. One officer warned that he did not want to end up shooting the dog, but the situation became dangerous when the dog came loose near officers.
“Dispatch, shots fired at our location,” one officer says in the footage.
The officer later explains that the dog came at him after David ran around the corner. He said he fired a couple of rounds in front of the animal rather than directly at it.

After the shots were fired, officers gave a description of the fleeing suspect as a white male, about 5-foot-5, with facial tattoos, a red hoodie, and gym sweats.
One officer said David was last seen heading toward Valley Street after allegedly setting the dog loose on his partner.
Officers checked nearby structures and spoke with residents, including people who said they had not seen anyone enter their home. Police also discussed clearing the house and the shed area connected to the original trespassing call.
The search eventually moved toward a garage, where officers began to suspect David might have hidden.
One officer said the dog had stopped near the corner of the garage rather than continuing to run with him, which made him think the suspect may have gone inside.
That instinct proved important because a man nearby soon told officers that David was in the garage and claimed there was a hostage inside.
“He Wouldn’t Let Me Out”
Officers surrounded the garage and ordered the people inside to come out.
“Individuals inside the garage, I need you to step out the front door now,” an officer calls in the footage.
At one point, officers see the door handle move, but then the door shuts again. An officer says there are at least two people inside.
Eventually, David comes out and officers order him to walk backward, turn around, and get down on his knees. Once he is detained, officers move in to check the garage.
A woman then comes out visibly upset and tells officers that he would not let her leave.
“He wouldn’t let me out,” she says in the footage.
Officers try to calm her, get her away from the garage, and place her in a cruiser so she can breathe and feel safe.
The woman tells officers she was inside watching a movie when she heard the door fly open and slam shut. She initially thought it was her boyfriend, but instead, David had run in, locked the door, and told her to be quiet.
She says she heard gunshots outside and did not understand what was happening.
According to her account in the bodycam footage, David told her not to go anywhere and repeatedly said she was not leaving.
A Friend Becomes A Hostage
The woman tells officers that she knew David as a friend and believed his name might be David, though she also knew him by the nickname “Shorty.”
That part of the case stood out to Midwest Safety’s host, who said the incident showed how quickly a person trying to avoid consequences can turn on people around them.
The host observed that once David realized he might be caught, the woman’s safety stopped mattering to him.
That is a fair reading of the footage. The woman was not a stranger on the street; she said he was someone she knew, yet she still described him running into her space, locking the door, and refusing to let her leave while police were outside.

Officers eventually asked whether medics were needed because she was still shaking, and one officer said he wanted medical personnel to check her just to make sure she was okay.
Charges And Case Outcome
Midwest Safety reported that the female who refused to provide identification was charged with trespassing, obstructing, and refusal to disclose personal information. The host noted that she is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
The male suspect, identified as David, was originally charged with felonious assault, aggravated menacing, kidnapping, aggravated burglary, inducing panic, refusal to disclose personal information, obstructing, resisting, and cruelty to animals.
According to the channel, David was later indicted on different charges, including trespassing in a habitation, aggravated burglary causing physical harm, felony kidnapping, obstructing, and resisting.
Midwest Safety reported that he later took a plea deal, pleading guilty to trespassing and obstructing, while the other charges were dismissed.
He was sentenced to five years of probation and released back into the public.
That outcome is one of the more striking parts of the report, especially given how serious the scene appeared on bodycam. The footage shows officers responding to shots fired, searching for a fleeing suspect, surrounding a garage, and helping a shaken woman who said she had been held inside.
