A newly purchased foreclosed home in Burlington, Connecticut, became the center of a startling investigation after the buyer walked inside and found the skeletal remains of three people, according to an NBC Connecticut report from Melissa Cooney.
Cooney reported from Burlington that police still have not identified the individuals, determined how long they had been dead, or established a cause of death. Authorities also said there was no indication of foul play and no threat to the public.
“Unusual indeed,” Cooney said during the report. “We want to be clear. We don’t know who these people are, why they were in the home, or how long they had been dead for.”
The discovery was made days after the property was sold at a public foreclosure auction in “as is” condition, leaving investigators and neighbors with a deeply unsettling question: how could three bodies remain inside a home long enough to become skeletal remains without anyone realizing it?
A Hidden Property With Warning Signs
Cooney said the home is on Stanwich Lane in Burlington, though she noted the property is not visible from the road. When NBC Connecticut went to the area, the house was blocked by shrubs, weeds, and signs warning people to keep out.
“Seven Stanwich Lane is not visible from the road,” Cooney reported. “And when you do get to it, it’s covered in shrubs and weeds blocking the door.”
That image alone tells part of the story. A home that is hidden from the road, overgrown, and marked by “keep out” signs can sit in plain sight while still feeling completely cut off from the outside world.
According to Burlington property records reviewed by NBC Connecticut, a couple purchased the home in 2019. The foreclosure process began in August 2025, and the public auction was held in June.
The home was sold last Wednesday, according to Cooney’s timeline. On Sunday, police said the new buyer went inside, apparently for one of the first times, and found the remains.
The call brought state police to the property around 4:45 p.m. for a report of human remains inside the home.
The House Was Sold “As Is”
Cooney spoke with attorney Chris Thogmartin, the independent third-party attorney appointed by the court to manage the foreclosure sale, to understand how a buyer could purchase a property without seeing what was inside.
Thogmartin explained that access to the interior is not always guaranteed in foreclosure auctions.
“I always send out a letter, like the week before the auction saying, listen, you know, there’s a foreclosure auction scheduled,” Thogmartin told Cooney. “It would be helpful for the bidders to have interior access. You’re not required to provide this, but I think it might be in your best interest.”
He said he never received a response, which he described as not unusual.
That detail is important because foreclosure sales often carry risks regular homebuyers may not fully understand. A property sold “as is” can include structural problems, abandoned belongings, damage, liens, or unseen hazards. In this case, the unseen condition was far more disturbing than anyone would expect.
There is a cold legal logic to buying a foreclosed home as-is, but this case shows how that phrase can hide a human mystery behind a locked door.
The Owners Did Not Appear In Court
According to Cooney, court documents showed that the owners did not appear for the foreclosure hearings.
Thogmartin said he did not believe an appearance was filed, and there was no response to the letters he sent.
“I don’t believe there was an appearance filed, and there was certainly no response to my letter,” Thogmartin said in the report.
He also said a “keep out” sign appeared on the property during the foreclosure process, even though the house looked unkept and not lived in. That only deepened the confusion about who may have been coming to the property and when.
“I don’t think anyone had been inside, but who knows?” Thogmartin told Cooney. “It puzzles me as to who would put that sign up. I suppose it could have been the owner.”
That uncertainty hangs over the entire case. If no one was responding to court notices, if no one appeared at hearings, and if the property looked abandoned, then the timeline of who last entered the home becomes a major unanswered question.
Police Say There Is No Public Threat
Cooney said police have described the case as an isolated incident and said there is no danger to the public.
The state medical examiner’s office has not yet identified the causes of death, and the manner of death remains under investigation. The identities of the three people have not been released.
Police also said there appears to be no criminal aspect at this time and no indication of anything suspicious.
That does not make the discovery any less shocking. Three skeletal remains inside one home is the kind of thing that naturally makes people wonder about foul play, neglect, secrecy, or a tragic private event that went undiscovered.
Still, investigators are being careful not to say more than they know. At this stage, the facts are limited: three sets of remains were found, they have not been publicly identified, and authorities have not established how or when the individuals died.

NBC Connecticut also tried to contact the initial homeowners but had not been able to find a way to reach them beyond going to the house itself, which Cooney said the station had done.
“We will continue working to do them to see if they have any thoughts about this situation,” Cooney said, referring to efforts to reach the former owners.
She also said NBC Connecticut requested EMS and fire calls to the house dating back to 2019, when the property was last purchased.
That request could become important. Any prior emergency calls, welfare checks, medical responses, fire department visits, or other contacts with the property could help fill in the gaps between the 2019 purchase and the 2026 discovery.
A Foreclosure Mystery With Few Answers
The most unsettling part of the case is not only what was found, but how little is known after the discovery.
Authorities have not said who the three people were. They have not said whether they were connected to the former owners. They have not said whether the deaths happened at the same time or separately, or whether anyone had been inside the home in recent months.

There were signs to stay away, an overgrown entrance, owners who apparently did not respond during the foreclosure process, and a buyer who may not have seen the interior until after the sale was complete.
