A hiker searching for ancient petroglyphs in Arizona’s White Tank Mountains found something far more disturbing instead: human remains in a steep, remote ravine that would later be identified as 52-year-old Amber Barnett, a missing hiker who had vanished months earlier.

According to a report from EWU Bodycam, the discovery happened in November 2024, when a hiker went off trail inside White Tank Mountain Regional Park while looking for petroglyphs. The channel’s host said the hiker was exploring an area away from the marked path when he came across what appeared to be a skeletonized body and scattered bones.

The case, EWU Bodycam reported, was based on official police records released to date, with body camera footage showing deputies responding to the difficult terrain and the painful uncertainty that followed.

A Hiker’s Search Took A Dark Turn

In the footage, the hiker told the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office that he had found what appeared to be a torso, a head, and other bones nearby.

“There’s a torso and a head and there’s a bunch of other bones around it,” the hiker said.

Because cell service was poor in the ravine, he climbed higher to maintain reception and send deputies his GPS coordinates. He told dispatchers he was almost directly above the remains, but that the ravine below him was steep and difficult to reach.

“If I go get back down there, I’ll lose coverage,” he said, explaining that he was as close as he could get while still being able to communicate.

Deputies were able to get near the area, but EWU Bodycam reported that the route was too hazardous to reach safely on foot. A helicopter was brought in, and three deputies eventually landed near the scene to meet the hiker and begin the recovery effort.

It is hard not to pause on that detail. The person who found the remains had not been searching for a missing person. He was searching for history, for old markings in the rocks, and instead became the person who brought a family closer to answers after months of uncertainty.

Deputies Found Scattered Remains In A Ravine

When deputies reached the area, they found human remains in an advanced state of decomposition, with bone fragments spread across the ravine.

The hiker told deputies that environmental factors could have moved or disturbed the remains, and deputies appeared to consider that possibility as they looked around the site.

One deputy noted that the body appeared to have been there for some time. Another observed that the remains were broken apart and that bones seemed to extend farther across the area.

“There’s some more bones like some legs and stuff,” the hiker told deputies in the footage.

Deputies discussed whether animals, rain, or terrain may have caused the remains to scatter. One deputy noted that water could have washed some items away, while another wondered if animals had dragged bones into nearby holes or crevices.

The environment itself seemed to complicate everything. The ravine was steep, remote, and rugged, with rocks, brush, possible drainage paths, and limited safe access. Even for trained responders, this was not a simple recovery.

A Makeshift Campsite Raised New Questions

As deputies examined the area, they found something unexpected near the remains: what appeared to be a small makeshift campsite.

According to EWU Bodycam, deputies noticed what looked like a bed, a fireplace, a seating area, and a bridge-like structure made to cross a possible water pathway. Above the site, they also spotted what appeared to be a cross drawn on the rock face.

“It’s almost like they got lost and tried to survive,” one deputy said.

Another deputy said it looked as if someone had made a bed and tried to live there, at least for some period of time.

That discovery shifted the tone of the investigation. The remains were not simply found at the bottom of a ravine. There were signs that someone may have spent time there, possibly after becoming injured or stranded.

Deputies discussed several possibilities. One theory was that the person may have intentionally tried to live off the land. Another was that they may have slipped, fallen, become hurt, and then been unable to hike back out.

This is one of the more haunting parts of the case. A campsite in a ravine can suggest effort, planning, survival, or desperation, and sometimes all of those things at once.

A Daughter Arrived Looking For Her Mother

As deputies moved the remains toward a nearby parking area for further examination, an SUV approached. Inside was the daughter of a woman who had gone missing in the White Tank Mountains in April 2024.

“Is my mom?” she asked deputies.

A deputy told her they did not know yet.

“We have no idea,” the deputy said. “We don’t even know the race. All we know is that there is a skeletonized body up there.”

The deputy explained that the remains would be taken to the medical examiner’s office, where identification could be attempted through dental records.

The woman told deputies her mother had been getting dental work done in Mexico, but she also described details that might help identify her, including a distinctive smile, a gap in her teeth, missing bottom teeth, and red shoulder-length hair.

She also said a private investigator had contacted her and that someone believed the missing woman may have been wearing a floral shirt.

From the bodycam footage, it is clear that deputies were careful not to promise anything too soon. The remains were in such poor condition that visual identification was not possible, and the clothing at the scene was dirty and worn.

Still, the possibility was there. The daughter had arrived at the base of the mountain asking a question no family member ever wants to ask, but one that can become unavoidable after months of not knowing.

Personal Items Were Found Above The Ravine

Deputies later climbed above the ravine after noticing something unusual from the helicopter. There, they found several personal items near the trail above the campsite.

In the footage, one deputy found an empty water bottle and a journal. The journal contained notes or lists, including references to coins, email, a pastor, credit cards, car insurance, yard work, life insurance, and a 401(k).

Deputies also found what appeared to be women’s clothing, a Bible, a white hat, sandals, and other belongings.

The missing woman’s daughter said a witness had reported seeing her mother carrying a backpack and a large water bottle. She also told deputies that surveillance from before her mother disappeared showed her buying a new large plastic water bottle at Ross.

The details did not yet prove identity, but they began to form a picture. The items were consistent with someone who may have come prepared for a hike, prayer, or a personal retreat, but the location remained difficult to understand.

Deputies said the area was so remote that they had to be hoisted in by helicopter. They also noted that, based on what they had heard about the missing woman’s medical issues, they were unsure whether she would have been able to reach that spot.

Amber Barnett Was Later Identified

EWU Bodycam reported that the medical examiner eventually identified the remains through dental records as belonging to 52-year-old Amber Barnett, the missing hiker from April 2024.

According to the channel’s report, Barnett’s missing person file stated this was not the first time she had gone missing. The report also said she had a history of mental health issues, while her family said she had been dealing with several personal hardships in the months before she disappeared.

In the bodycam footage, a family member said Barnett’s father believed she may have gone into the mountains for a 40-day fast for spiritual reasons. Deputies were also told that her husband had died at the same park several months before she disappeared, after suffering a heart attack in an RV, and that her mother had died about a month before she went missing.

The family member also said Barnett may have stopped taking her medication, though she still volunteered and came to the park often.

These details do not turn the case into something simple. If anything, they make it more human. Grief, faith, isolation, physical risk, and mental health can overlap in ways that are difficult to explain from the outside.

Final Clues Suggested A Possible Fall

Near the end of the footage, deputies reached a ledge above the ravine and discovered a chute-like path leading down toward where Barnett’s remains were found.

One deputy noted broken branches and said it was possible someone had slipped from above. Another said a fall from that area could have caused enough injury to immobilize a person.

“That’s kind of my concern,” a deputy said, suggesting Barnett may have fallen, survived for a time, and been too injured to hike out.

Deputies also discussed the possibility that she may have crawled or moved rocks as part of an attempt to survive.

EWU Bodycam reported that, based on police records released to date, Barnett’s official cause of death remains undetermined. While deputies noted signs that could suggest an accidental fall and an attempt to survive in the mountains, the circumstances surrounding her final moments remain unclear.

That uncertainty is difficult, but the discovery still ended one part of the family’s ordeal. For seven months, Barnett’s loved ones did not know where she was. A hiker looking for ancient markings in the rocks found the place that search teams, witnesses, and investigators had not reached.

The White Tank Mountains kept many of their answers hidden, but not all of them. Amber Barnett was found in a place connected to something she loved, and although the full story of her final days may never be known, the discovery finally gave her family a path out of the unknown.
