A Florida woman who became furious after sentimental decorations repeatedly disappeared from her mother’s grave decided to set up a hidden camera, eventually giving police the evidence they needed to identify a suspected cemetery thief.

The case was featured by the bodycam channel Sgt. Pepperspray, whose narrator said the missing items were not particularly valuable in monetary terms, but meant a great deal to the families who had placed them at the graves of loved ones.

Among the stolen decorations were solar lights, small figures and a miniature truck that had been left in memory of a grandfather’s hobby.

Police would later discover that at least some of the items had apparently ended up decorating the suspected thief’s own property.

The First Items Disappeared From Her Mother’s Grave

The investigation began in April 2024 after a daughter called police to report that several decorations had disappeared from her mother’s burial site.

She told an officer that she had placed several solar bugs on poles around the grave, along with a small solar rooster near the flower vase.

Altogether, she estimated the items were worth only around $35.

Their emotional value, however, was much greater.

The woman said her mother had only been buried there since the previous December and that she visited the cemetery several times a week to rake, clean and maintain the gravesite.

When she first noticed the rooster was missing, she said she became furious.

“I was through the roof right then,” she told the officer.

She also made clear that the issue was not the dollar value of what had been taken.

“Those things right there, they’re a dollar, but you aren’t going to come up here and touch them because I put them there for my mama,” she said.

The Family Decided To Set Up A Camera

The officer advised the family not to confront whoever might be taking the items, particularly after the daughter admitted she was angry enough that she feared the situation could become physical.

Instead, police told her to call them if the suspect returned.

After a long gap, the thefts started again roughly a year later.

By then, the family had buried the woman’s stepfather at the same cemetery and had placed additional sentimental objects around his grave.

One was an old farm-truck decoration that the woman said her mother had purchased for him before his death.

This time, the family was prepared.

They hid a game camera in a nearby tree.

The footage captured someone approaching the graves and removing items.

An officer watching the video reacted with disbelief, remarking that the person shown appeared “way too old to be doing stuff like this.”

The footage also appeared to show the suspect trying to remove another object before giving up when it would not come loose.

Police Said The Video Made The Case Easier

The daughter was visibly upset as she showed officers the recording.

She said the family had even begun tying some decorations down with rope in an effort to stop people from taking them.

Her sister had apparently been watching the camera feed when she called and told her the suspect had just walked away with one of the miniature vehicles.

The responding officer said the video should make identifying the person considerably easier.

The woman asked whether police might also be able to recover fingerprints from anything the suspect touched, and she made clear that she wanted charges pursued.

“This is my mom’s and my stepdad’s resting place,” she said.

The officer shared her frustration, describing stealing from graves as about as low as someone could go.

That reaction is understandable because cemetery thefts often involve objects that would have little resale value but enormous emotional meaning to the family that placed them there.

Police Identified A Suspect Three Days Later

According to the Sgt. Pepperspray narrator, police identified the woman seen in the camera footage within three days and brought her in for questioning.

The officer began by telling her that honesty would matter.

After being advised of her rights, the woman agreed to speak.

When asked why she was there, she answered directly.

“Cuz I picked up stuff,” she said.

“From where?” the officer asked.

“The cemetery.”

She admitted visiting the cemetery several times and taking multiple items, including three decorative bugs, a tractor and a truck-shaped bird feeder.

One of the items, she said, was still at her house hanging from a tree.

She repeatedly told the officer that she did not know why she had taken the decorations and said she regretted doing it.

“I’m sorry I did it,” she said. “I wasn’t raised like that.”

She Said She Had Been Struggling Emotionally

During the interview, the woman offered several possible explanations for her behavior without settling on one.

She said someone close to her had been in the hospital and that her nerves had been bad, while also describing periods of financial hardship and saying she had once lived with very little food or money.

She told the officer she enjoyed working in her yard and apparently used some of the cemetery decorations around her own property.

When asked why those particular items attracted her, she said they were pretty.

She also acknowledged that she could have bought similar decorations herself.

That made the conduct especially difficult to explain, because she was not describing a desperate attempt to obtain something necessary for survival.

She repeatedly insisted that stealing was not who she was.

“I’m a good person,” she said. “I swear to God, I am.”

The officer did not argue about her character, but reminded her that being a good person did not erase the consequences of a bad decision.

It Was Apparently Not Her First Cemetery Theft

The interview took a more serious turn when the officer asked whether she had ever taken anything from another cemetery.

The woman admitted that she had been in trouble years earlier over a decorative item taken from another grave.

She initially described it as an owl or bear-like decoration and said the previous case had resulted in her paying about $800 after returning the item.

The officer then asked the obvious question: she had already been caught once, so why had she started doing it again?

The woman still could not provide a clear answer.

She promised that she would never take anything from another grave again.

The officer tried to make the harm more personal by asking how she would feel if someone stole an item she had carefully chosen and placed on the grave of one of her own loved ones.

“That’s true,” she replied. “I’m so sorry.”

That exchange may have been the most important part of the questioning because it moved the conversation away from the low monetary value of the decorations and back to why families had put them there in the first place.

The woman was arrested after the interview.

The Sgt. Pepperspray narrator said she was initially charged with two counts of criminal mischief, although the case was later filed as a felony involving injuring or moving a tomb or monument.

She was ultimately sentenced to two months in jail, fined $1,070.50 and placed on probation for two years.

For the daughter who first noticed the missing decorations, the case began with a handful of inexpensive solar lights and ornaments.

But those objects were never really about money.

They were part of the way she cared for and remembered her mother and stepfather, which is why repeatedly finding them missing felt like a violation of the graves themselves.

Setting up the camera finally gave the family an answer to what had been happening, and police eventually found that the person taking the decorations had apparently been bringing some of them home.

The unusual case ended with a criminal sentence, but the frustration behind it was much simpler: the family wanted to be able to leave a small memorial at a loved one’s resting place and trust that another person would have the decency to leave it alone.
