A Volusia County traffic stop turned into a DUI investigation after deputies said a Florida woman was observed committing multiple traffic violations, showing signs of impairment, and driving with an open alcoholic beverage inside her vehicle, according to bodycam footage featured by the YouTube channel Florida Man Arrest Cam.
The channel’s host said deputies stopped the woman after watching her drive erratically for several miles. When the deputy approached the vehicle, the driver immediately tried to explain the situation by saying he had been following too closely behind her bumper.
The deputy did not appear convinced by that answer. In the footage, he asked if that was why she had been “driving so erratically for multiple miles,” and the woman denied that she had done anything wrong.
The stop also began with a seatbelt issue. When the deputy asked whether she had been wearing her seatbelt that way the entire time, the woman responded by bringing up her body type and a back surgery she said she had undergone the previous November.
That set the tone for the rest of the encounter. Almost every question from the deputy was met with a long explanation, a personal detail, or a reason why what he was seeing might not mean what it appeared to mean.
The Driver Says She Only Had “One or Two”
When the deputy asked whether she had been drinking, the woman admitted she had consumed “one or two” drinks because she wanted to go sing karaoke. She then moved quickly into a broader explanation of her recent life, saying she had bought a house in Deltona with cash, had been going to physical therapy, and had also been seeing a therapist for depression and anxiety.
The deputy listened, but he brought the conversation back to the reason for the stop. He told her that her speech had been slow and slurred since he walked up to the car, and that she had been “all over the place” while speaking with him.
He then asked whether she would participate in field sobriety exercises so he could determine whether she was safe to operate a motor vehicle.
The woman agreed, but not before raising more medical concerns. She said her foot was ready for an implant and that she could not walk properly until that happened. She also mentioned her back surgery again and said she had undergone three surgeries in the previous two and a half years.
The deputy tried to account for that by telling her he could offer exercises that did not involve walking. That was a key part of the investigation because it showed the officer was not simply ignoring her claimed medical limitations.
Still, the explanations continued. As she got out of the car, she again said she had only been driving the man in the passenger seat home and had been trying to “make a friend.”
Medical Issues, New Glasses and New Boots
Once the woman stepped toward the front of the patrol vehicle, she brought up another issue: her glasses. She said she had just gotten new glasses that day and that they were not perfect, explaining that the prescription was not exactly right.
The deputy told her that would not prevent him from continuing, but she kept returning to the subject. She also mentioned that she was wearing brand-new boots, saying they were expensive and had only been worn for the second time that night.
The deputy repeatedly told her that he was not going to conduct the normal walking exercises because she had already described foot, back, and surgery-related issues. Instead, he attempted to move forward with exercises that could be done while standing or sitting.
That did not stop the driver from continuing to explain why even basic instructions might be difficult. She mentioned her back surgery, her physical therapy, her broken foot, her new glasses, her contacts, and the fact that she had never been in trouble before.
At one point, the deputy asked whether there were any medical or vision problems she had not already told him about. She answered by saying she had gone out for “one hour of fun” on a Friday night and was trying to live a normal life.
This is where the stop became less about one single excuse and more about a pattern. Some medical issues can absolutely affect field sobriety exercises, and officers should take them seriously. But in this footage, the woman’s repeated explanations also made it difficult for the deputy to complete even the most basic instructions.
The Sobriety Exercises Break Down
The deputy first attempted an eye test and instructed the woman to follow a small light with her eyes only, without moving her head. During the exercise, he told her she was turning her head and explained the instructions again.
The woman said she did not know what he was asking her to do, then returned to the subject of her new Walmart glasses and contacts. The deputy told her she could blink normally and did not need to hold her eyes open.
As she became emotional, the deputy told her to take a deep breath and focus on what he was asking. He said they were going to get through the process, but she needed to stop thinking about every other issue and pay attention to the directions.
He then moved to seated exercises, including a finger-to-nose task, because she had said she had trouble standing for long periods. Even then, she brought up a past hand surgery and asked for tissue to wipe her tears.
The final exercise was a modified Romberg balance test, in which she was asked to estimate 30 seconds with her eyes closed. When the deputy stopped her and asked how long she thought had passed, she said “several minutes.”
The deputy then asked whether she remembered being told to estimate 30 seconds and say stop when she believed that amount of time had passed. The woman responded that he was the “authoritarian” and that she was going until he told her to stop.
That answer seemed to be the final moment in the roadside investigation. The deputy told her to put her hands behind her back and placed her under arrest for driving under the influence.
Open Containers and a Breath Test Question
After the arrest, the woman continued to argue that the roadside test had not been fair. She suggested taking off the boots and doing it again, but the deputy pointed out that he had not asked her to walk or perform the standard exercises that would have been affected by footwear.
He also told her that the boots did not explain problems following instructions or signs he said he saw in her eyes.
The deputy then requested that she submit to a lawful breath test to determine her alcohol content. The woman repeatedly said she was not drunk and asked for more explanation, but the deputy kept the question narrow: would she provide a breath sample, yes or no?
After more back-and-forth, she eventually answered no.
Meanwhile, deputies spoke with the passenger about items inside the vehicle. They asked about a clear plastic cup with brown liquid that had been in the cup holder and later ended up on the floor in the back. They also asked about a White Claw can that had apparently been in or near her purse and was later on the floor.
The passenger did not clearly claim ownership of the drink. Later, an officer noted there was a White Claw green apple can and liquid spilled in the vehicle, describing the mess in unpleasant terms and suggesting it might have involved alcohol mixed with urine after the passenger reportedly had to urinate during the stop.
A Case That Got Worse With Every Explanation
According to Florida Man Arrest Cam, the woman was ultimately charged with DUI over 0.15, driving on the wrong side in a no-passing zone, failure to wear a seatbelt, and possession of an open container in a vehicle. The video description reported her breath test result at 0.203 g/210L.
That reported number is more than twice Florida’s standard legal limit of 0.08, and it also explains why the DUI charge was listed as over 0.15.
The most notable part of the footage is not just the arrest itself, but how the conversation unfolded. The driver seemed to believe every new detail might soften the situation, from her surgeries to her house purchase to her glasses, boots, and short distance from home.
Some of those details may have been true, and some may have mattered in small ways. A back injury, foot problem, or recent surgery can affect balance and mobility, which is why the deputy adjusted the exercises instead of relying only on walking tests.
But none of those details answered the central concerns the deputy had: erratic driving, slurred speech, an admission of drinking, an open container, and difficulty following instructions during the investigation.
The footage also shows why DUI investigations often become more complicated when a driver refuses to focus on the questions being asked. Long explanations may feel helpful to the person giving them, but they can also make the situation appear worse when they replace direct answers.
By the end of the stop, the woman’s repeated claim that she was close to home did not change the deputy’s decision. Whether a person is two miles away or twenty, the legal question is still whether they are safe and lawful to drive.
In this case, deputies concluded she was not, and the attempt to explain everything away only made the investigation longer and more difficult.
