A Florida mother was arrested after police say she became so intoxicated while caring for three young children that her 8-year-old son refused to get back into the car with her and told adults she had been drinking.

The incident in Sarasota began with what initially sounded like a possible child abduction, according to narration from the bodycam footage channel Code Blue Cam.

A concerned witness called police after seeing three children crying and screaming while a woman tried to force them into a vehicle.

When officers arrived, they quickly learned the woman was not an abductor. She was the children’s mother, and the situation appeared to involve suspected impaired driving with three children, including a 7-month-old baby, in her care.

An 8-Year-Old Tells Police What He Saw

While one officer spoke with the mother and began a field sobriety investigation, another talked with the children.

The oldest child told police he had seen his mother drink alcohol after stopping at a gas station.

“As soon as I saw my mom drink the alcohol, I knew she like could not drive anymore,” the boy said in the footage.

He explained that she went inside the gas station, came back out with a drink, “chugged all of it,” and then threw the container into a trash can.

The child said he noticed an immediate change afterward.

According to him, his mother began walking differently and “talking weird,” which convinced him that the drink contained alcohol.

That is one of the most unsettling parts of the encounter. An 8-year-old should not have to judge whether a parent is too intoxicated to drive, yet the child appears to have understood the danger clearly enough to resist getting back into the car.

The boy also told an officer that his mother had previously been jailed for drinking and driving.

He then added that she had only recently gotten her driver’s license back.

Witness Says Children Were “Hysterical”

Another officer later spoke directly with the woman who called police.

The witness said she had pulled into the area and initially believed the children might be getting abducted because they were screaming so intensely.

“The kids were hysterical,” she told police.

She said the situation continued long enough that she approached the oldest child and asked if everything was okay.

According to the witness, the boy responded that his mother had been drinking and that his baby brother was in the back seat.

The caller described the 8-year-old as desperately trying to protect the younger children.

“This little boy was trying to save this kid,” she said.

The witness also told officers that the mother appeared unable to speak clearly and was swaying as she tried to get the children into the vehicle.

She said the children were running around the car and refusing to get inside.

At one point, according to the witness, the boy yelled that he was not getting in because his mother had been “drinking and doing drugs.”

The caller also said she could hear another woman on speakerphone, apparently the children’s grandmother, pleading with the mother not to drive away with the children.

The combination of the child’s account, the witness statement and the mother’s condition gave officers a much clearer picture of what they believed had happened before they arrived.

Field Sobriety Test Raises More Concerns

Police then put the mother through field sobriety exercises.

The woman initially told officers she was not intoxicated and appeared reluctant to discuss what had happened.

During the testing, officers checked her eyes and attempted a walk-and-turn exercise.

At one point, the mother herself questioned whether she could safely perform the walking test.

An officer eventually told her directly that she was going to jail.

He also explained that he did not want to place her in handcuffs in front of the children because he did not want them to be further traumatized.

“I don’t want your kids to be scarred from this,” the officer told her.

She thanked him for handling the arrest that way.

That moment created an unusual contrast in the footage. The officers were trying to shield the children from seeing their mother placed in handcuffs, even though the children had already witnessed enough to understand that something was badly wrong.

Police Find Suspected Drugs

After the arrest decision was made, officers searched the mother.

According to Code Blue Cam, they found a substance hidden on her person.

When an officer asked what it was, she said she had bought it as ketamine and told police she used it by snorting it.

The footage later shows officers discussing further testing of the substance and continuing their search.

Code Blue Cam reported that officers eventually confirmed the substance was an illegal controlled substance, and additional suspected drug-related evidence was found in the vehicle.

The discovery made the case more serious because the mother was no longer facing only an impaired-driving investigation.

Police were now dealing with alleged drug possession on top of concerns that three children had been riding in the car.

Grandmother Arrives To Take The Children

The children’s grandmother eventually arrived at the scene.

She told police that she had spoken with her daughter shortly before the gas station stop and that she sounded normal at that time.

An officer suggested that the mother may have consumed alcohol rapidly after arriving.

“She’s probably the drunkest I’ve ever seen somebody,” one officer told the grandmother.

He also said her eyes were among the worst he had ever observed during a DUI investigation.

The officer emphasized how fortunate the children were that the situation had not ended in a crash.

“She is lucky that she didn’t kill them,” he said. “She’s lucky that she didn’t hit anybody.”

Police explained that the Department of Children and Families would have to be involved before the children could be released to their grandmother.

The grandmother said she understood the seriousness of what had happened.

At one point, officers also learned that the mother worked at a daycare with infants.

Officer Tells Her “This Has To Stop”

As officers prepared to transport the mother, one officer became visibly frustrated.

He told her that resources were available if she needed help but said the behavior could not continue.

“I hope you get the help you need,” he said.

Then he added, “This has to stop.”

When the mother became focused on whether her baby was hungry, the officer said police would make sure the child was fed because they were sober and able to care for him safely.

The exchange was harsh, but it reflected the larger concern running through the entire incident: the children had effectively become responsible for their own safety until another adult stepped in.

The oldest child’s refusal to enter the car may have been the most important decision made that evening.

Mother Faces Multiple Charges

Code Blue Cam reported that the 28-year-old mother was ultimately charged with felony child neglect, possession of a controlled substance, misdemeanor DUI, possession or use of narcotic equipment, and refusal to submit to DUI testing.

Her total cash bond was set at $5,500.

The channel reported that her next jury-trial hearing was scheduled for September 2026.

The case remains unresolved in court, and the charges are allegations unless proven.

Still, the bodycam footage shows how close the situation may have come to becoming much worse.

A child recognized that his mother appeared too impaired to drive, refused to get into the vehicle and told another adult what was happening.

That should never have been an 8-year-old’s responsibility, but according to the footage, his decision helped bring police to the scene before the car left again.
