A North Phoenix family says it spent about $10,000 repairing its home after a teenager allegedly kicked in the front door as part of a viral social media challenge, leaving behind damage far more serious than a short online clip might suggest.

12 News reporter Tiani Jadulang said Phoenix police have identified a 14-year-old boy believed to be connected to the so-called “door kick challenge,” a trend in which people record themselves forcefully kicking or damaging residential doors before running away.

The case drew attention after surveillance footage from September 12 appeared to show two juveniles approaching a home near Tatum and Thunderbird, with one of them kicking the front door open before both fled the area.

Family Says The Door Would Not Even Close

Jadulang reported that the homeowner’s daughter, Brooke, had previously described extensive damage immediately after the incident.

She said the door had cracked in several places and was so badly damaged that it no longer opened and closed properly.

“There’s like a bunch of cracking in the door in a bunch of different areas,” Brooke said.

The family temporarily had to secure the entryway with boards because the damaged door would not stay in place.

That detail helps explain why a prank that lasts only a few seconds on video can become a major financial and safety problem for the people on the other side of it. A front door is not just cosmetic; once the frame and surrounding structure are damaged, the home may no longer be secure.

Police Identify A 14-Year-Old Suspect

Nearly two weeks after the video was first shared, Phoenix police identified the person seen kicking the door as a 14-year-old boy, according to Jadulang.

The teenager was taken into custody on Wednesday and booked into the Durango juvenile detention facility on one count of criminal damage and one count of unlawful use of transportation.

The investigation also uncovered another serious allegation.

Detectives determined that the red truck the juveniles had arrived in had been reported stolen from Scottsdale.

Police later said the same 14-year-old was also linked to another stolen vehicle reported in Phoenix.

Jadulang said a Silent Witness tip helped investigators identify the teenager.

What began as a viral-video investigation therefore expanded well beyond property damage at one house, with police saying the juvenile was also connected to stolen vehicles.

Repairs Reached Roughly $10,000

Brooke, who asked to remain off camera for safety reasons, told 12 News that the family ultimately spent around $10,000 repairing the entrance.

She said the damage went well beyond simply replacing the visible door.

“The damages were really extensive,” Brooke said.

According to her, workers had to remove damaged materials around the entrance, tear out the frame and rebuild the surrounding structure before the family could install a replacement.

The new door is made of steel, which Brooke said was chosen because it is sturdier.

“He ripped out everything and then ripped out the frame area and had to build new framing,” she said, describing the repair process as lengthy.

That cost may surprise people who assume a damaged door can simply be swapped out for another one. Once the force of an impact damages the frame, jamb and surrounding structure, the repair can become much closer to a small construction job than a basic hardware replacement.

Viral Attention Also Brought Help

Although the video itself was upsetting for the family, Brooke said the attention it received online eventually brought some unexpected help.

As the footage spread on social media, people in the community reached out with support and helped connect the family with contractors and others who could assist with repairs.

“I’m incredibly grateful for the community,” Brooke said.

She added that people were willing to step in quickly after seeing the extent of the damage.

That response offers a different side to a story rooted in social media. The same platforms that helped turn a destructive stunt into a trend also helped the family find people willing to repair the harm left behind.

A Short Stunt With Long Consequences

Jadulang’s report shows how quickly an online challenge can move from something participants may see as a joke into a criminal case involving thousands of dollars in damage.

The family was left with an unsecured home, a damaged frame and a repair bill of roughly $10,000, while the 14-year-old now faces charges tied to both the door incident and the alleged use of a stolen vehicle.

Police have not suggested that every teenager involved in similar door-kicking videos is connected to other crimes, but this case shows how serious the consequences can become when property is damaged and vehicles are involved.

For the family, the physical repair is now largely complete, with a stronger steel door in place and the entrance rebuilt.

The legal process, however, continues, and what appeared on social media as a few seconds of reckless behavior has turned into a much larger case involving juvenile detention, stolen vehicles and a home that had to be rebuilt at considerable expense.
