Detectives investigating suspects behind Los Angeles kidnapping and execution

Detectives are continuing to investigate a disturbing kidnapping and killing that began outside a home in Chino Hills and ended after a short police pursuit, with one suspect dead, another jailed without bail, and the motive still unclear.

FOX 11 Los Angeles reporter Susan Hirasuna said investigators identified the victim as 60-year-old Chino Hills resident Shukur Aikebaer, an immigrant from China who was part of the area’s close-knit Uyghur community. Authorities believe Aikebaer knew one of the suspects, 67-year-old Irvine resident Zhengfeng Bo, through a previous working relationship.

That connection may eventually help investigators explain why Aikebaer was targeted, but law enforcement had not publicly disclosed what happened between the men or what could have led to such an elaborate and violent attack.

Power Cut Before The Ambush

According to Hirasuna’s video report, the incident began at about 10 p.m. on July 29 in the 2100 block of Monteverde Drive, where neighbors reported hearing gunshots and screams.

Investigators believe Zhengfeng Bo and 66-year-old Jianquan Bo deliberately cut power to Aikebaer’s residence, apparently intending to draw him outside to inspect the electrical panel. When Aikebaer came out of the house, authorities allege that the two men shot him and forced him into the trunk of a gray Nissan Altima.

The use of a power outage makes the crime especially unsettling because it suggests the suspects may have planned not only the abduction, but also the exact method they would use to bring the victim outside. It turned an ordinary household problem into a trap and may explain why neighbors initially had little warning that something much more serious was taking place.

One resident near Aikebaer’s home told FOX 11 that the suspects fled quickly after placing someone in the vehicle.

“They put whoever they put in the car, and they took off real fast, and they hit the curb right there,” the neighbor said.

The man, who said he had lived in the neighborhood since 1991, added that he had never heard of anything similar happening there before.

Pursuit Ends With Gunfire At The Trunk

The kidnapping led sheriff’s deputies into a short pursuit that ended near Gemstone Court and Wandering Ridge Drive, about a mile and a half from Aikebaer’s home.

Security video described by Hirasuna showed the Nissan stopping as law enforcement officers surrounded it. Jianquan Bo, who was riding as a passenger, got out and surrendered.

What happened next became the most shocking part of the case.

Authorities said Zhengfeng Bo stepped out of the driver’s side, ignored commands from deputies, moved toward the open trunk, and fired directly inside it. Deputies then opened fire, striking him.

Both Zhengfeng Bo and Aikebaer were pronounced dead at the scene despite attempts to provide lifesaving aid.

The sequence captured on surveillance footage appears to have given investigators a clear view of the final moments, but it has not answered every important question. Officials had not confirmed whether Aikebaer died from the initial shooting outside his house or from the later gunfire into the trunk.

That unanswered detail may be important for the final reconstruction of the crime, although it does not change the broader allegation that Aikebaer was shot, abducted, and killed during a targeted attack.

Surviving Suspect Held Without Bail

Jianquan Bo was taken into custody and booked at the West Valley Detention Center on suspicion of murder and kidnapping, according to the report. He was being held without bail while the investigation continued.

The completed case is expected to be forwarded to the San Bernardino County District Attorney’s Office, which will review the evidence and determine what formal criminal charges should be filed.

Law enforcement has described the incident as a multi-scene homicide and kidnapping investigation because it began at Aikebaer’s Chino Hills home, continued along the pursuit route, and later expanded to the suspects’ residence in Irvine.

Investigators have not publicly explained whether Zhengfeng Bo and Jianquan Bo were related, nor did the report establish the exact nature of the prior business or working connection between Zhengfeng Bo and Aikebaer.

Those missing details leave the central mystery unresolved. The mechanics of the alleged ambush are becoming clearer, but the reason behind it remains hidden, which is often the hardest part of a targeted crime for detectives to untangle.

Authorities Search Irvine Residence

The investigation led San Bernardino County Sheriff’s homicide detectives to a stone-front house in the Great Park neighborhood of Irvine, where Zhengfeng Bo and Jianquan Bo lived.

Hirasuna reported from the normally quiet neighborhood after San Bernardino County deputies, the FBI, and Irvine Police served a search warrant at the residence. Officers recovered evidence that authorities believe may be connected to the kidnapping and killing, although officials did not disclose exactly what was found.

Two adults and a young person were temporarily detained during the operation. An Irvine woman who lived two doors away said police and SWAT officers arrived with their weapons drawn and ordered nearby residents to remain inside.

“So the police and the SWAT had all their guns drawn,” the woman said. “That’s when they told us to go inside.”

She said no shots were fired during the search, but the sight of heavily armed officers surrounding a home in such a quiet area was frightening.

“It’s honestly scary to me,” she told FOX 11.

The neighbor said she had rarely interacted with the people living inside the home and knew almost nothing about their work or daily lives.

“I don’t know what business they’re affiliated with, what work they do or anything because the house is always quiet,” she said. “The lights are sometimes on, but you just don’t hear anything, like any commotion coming from the house.”

That description adds another unsettling layer to the investigation. Neighbors saw an ordinary, low-profile household, while detectives now believe people associated with that residence may have carried out a carefully arranged kidnapping.

Detectives Still Searching For A Motive

Authorities said Aikebaer and Zhengfeng Bo had previously known one another through work, but investigators had not explained what kind of work they performed together or whether a dispute developed from that relationship.

Neighbors in Chino Hills also struggled to understand why Aikebaer would have been targeted. Hirasuna reported that he belonged to a small and closely connected Uyghur community after emigrating from China.

Some residents noted that burglaries had occurred in the surrounding area before, including incidents in which security systems were reportedly disabled. However, authorities have characterized Aikebaer’s abduction as a targeted ambush rather than a random burglary.

Investigators were also still examining how the electricity to the home was interrupted. No public details had been released about whether the suspects accessed an exterior panel, damaged equipment, or used another method to shut down the power.

The difference matters because it could reveal how much preparation went into the crime. Cutting electricity at the right moment would likely require some familiarity with the property, the victim’s routine, or both.

Key Questions Remain Unanswered

The known evidence presents a grim sequence: a deliberate power outage, gunfire outside a residence, a man forced into a trunk, a police chase, and a final shot fired into the vehicle as deputies closed in.

Yet detectives still have not identified the motive, released details about the evidence recovered in Irvine, or explained why Aikebaer’s earlier working relationship with Zhengfeng Bo ended in violence.

The surviving suspect may become a major source of information as the case moves forward, although any statements, physical evidence, phone records, financial documents, or communications would have to be reviewed and tested against the rest of the investigation.

For now, the case has left two communities shaken. In Chino Hills, neighbors are trying to understand why a resident was apparently lured from his home and abducted, while people in Irvine are confronting the discovery that a quiet house nearby had become the focus of a joint sheriff’s, police, and FBI operation.

As Hirasuna’s report made clear, detectives have established much of what happened during the attack, but they are still searching for the answer that may matter most: why it happened at all.
