New details about the rehabilitation facility where Presley Gerber died have prompted Megyn Kelly to question whether the 27-year-old son of Cindy Crawford and Rande Gerber had been placed in an environment secure enough for someone struggling with addiction.

Kelly discussed the case on The Megyn Kelly Show after reports identified the Santa Monica location as a structured recovery residence rather than a traditional hospital-style detox center, with residents living in a supervised sober setting that included shared meals, outings and upscale amenities.

Gerber died on September 20, and police have said his death is being investigated as a suspected overdose. An autopsy had been performed, but the medical examiner had not yet announced a final cause of death at the time of the reports Kelly discussed.

Kelly said the circumstances immediately stood out to her because they were very different from her own experience with a loved one who had stayed at a much more tightly controlled rehabilitation facility.

Kelly Questions How Secure the Facility Was

Kelly said she had previously assumed that someone in an inpatient rehabilitation setting would be in a place where alcohol, controlled substances and anything that could be used to get high would be difficult to bring inside.

She contrasted Gerber’s facility with Caron Treatment Centers in the Northeast, where she said a loved one had received care.

“They were wonderful,” Kelly said, adding that she had trouble imagining how someone would be able to overdose inside a facility with that level of control.

She then pointed to reporting from TMZ that described Gerber’s Santa Monica program as something different from the more locked-down type of rehab many people may picture.

The TMZ clip aired by Kelly said people often assume rehab means one centralized building where patients are constantly watched, but that luxury recovery programs can operate much more like private residences.

The report described Gerber’s facility as an all-male setting that looked more like a high-end house than a hospital or detox unit.

That distinction matters because the word “rehab” can describe very different levels of care, and someone transitioning out of intensive treatment may have far more freedom than someone in a detox or acute stabilization program.

A ‘Structured Recovery Residence’

Kelly cited reporting describing the facility as a “structured recovery residence” designed for people moving out of more intensive treatment and trying to rebuild daily routines in a sober environment.

Residents could take part in communal meals, social activities and outings, all intended to encourage accountability and healthier relationships while they adjusted to life outside a stricter treatment setting.

The residence was also described as offering 24/7 on-site staff, chef-prepared meals, a stocked pantry, a gym, a movie theater and common outdoor areas.

Kelly argued that those features helped explain why the environment may have been less restrictive than many viewers would expect from a traditional rehab facility.

“You’re not a prisoner. You can leave,” she said, while drawing a distinction between freedom of movement and the tighter controls she believes serious addiction treatment may sometimes require.

Her larger concern was not the existence of amenities, but whether the level of supervision matched Gerber’s condition.

That is a reasonable question to raise, although the reports Kelly cited did not establish exactly how Gerber obtained any substance, whether staff violated protocol, or whether the facility failed to follow its own rules.

911 Call Referenced Cardiac Arrest and Overdose

Kelly also discussed reporting surrounding the emergency response.

She said an automated voice on a poor-quality 911 call referenced “cardiac arrest” and “overdose.”

According to the reporting she cited, police, firefighters and an ambulance all responded, with authorities remaining at the scene for several hours.

Page Six reported that Gerber had checked himself into the Santa Monica facility because he knew he needed help and had not been doing well.

An unnamed source described him as struggling with self-esteem, identity and a sense of purpose, while also wanting badly to break free from addiction.

Those descriptions remain claims from an unnamed source rather than official findings, but they fit with Gerber’s own past public comments about mental health and substance use.

Before his death, Gerber had spoken openly about depression, addiction and recovery, saying he hoped sharing his experience might help other people feel less alone.

Gerber Had Spoken Publicly About His Struggles

Gerber, who began modeling as a teenager, had increasingly used his public platform to talk about mental health in the years before his death.

He said on the Studio 22 podcast that mental health had become a major part of his life and described it as a “24/7 job.”

Gerber also said he wanted to help people dealing with depression or other struggles affecting their lives, and he regularly posted videos focused on recovery and mental health.

In a later social media video, he spoke about taking medications for panic attacks and described feeling alone after experiencing significant personal losses.

His sister, Kaia Gerber, had also spoken publicly about the effect his long-running addiction struggles had on their family, describing him as unusually open about what he was going through.

That background makes the circumstances of his death especially painful because he was not someone hiding the fact that he needed help.

He had spoken about it repeatedly and, according to reports cited by Kelly, had entered treatment voluntarily because he knew his condition had become serious.

Kelly Says He May Have Needed a More Restrictive Setting

Kelly’s strongest conclusion was that Gerber may have required a more secure level of care than the structured residence provided.

“You can’t help but think, okay, obviously somebody in his condition needed a much more secure facility,” she said.

That is Kelly’s judgment based on the reports available, not a medical conclusion established by investigators.

There are still major unanswered questions, including what substance may have been involved, how it entered the facility, what level of supervision Gerber was under, and whether anyone failed to follow appropriate procedures.

Until the medical examiner completes additional testing and police finish their investigation, those details remain unresolved.

Still, Kelly argued that the case exposes how misleading the word “rehab” can be when different programs offer dramatically different levels of control.

Gerber’s death has drawn attention not only because of his famous family, but because it happened at a place where he had apparently gone specifically to seek help.

His parents, Cindy Crawford and Rande Gerber, and his sister Kaia have asked for privacy during what their representative described as a deeply painful time.

For now, the official investigation remains focused on a suspected overdose, while the exact cause of death is still pending further testing.

Kelly’s commentary centered on the gap between what many people imagine a rehabilitation facility to be and what Gerber’s residence appears to have been in practice.

A supervised recovery home can be an appropriate step for some people leaving more intensive treatment, but the reports surrounding Gerber’s death have raised difficult questions about whether that level of care was enough for him.

Those questions cannot be answered fully until investigators establish how the overdose happened and what safeguards were in place.

What is already clear is that Gerber had sought help, had spoken openly about his addiction, and died while inside a facility meant to support recovery, leaving his family and the public waiting for a fuller explanation of what went wrong.
