A long-running battlefield myth says the M1 Carbine struggled to penetrate heavy winter clothing in World War II and Korea, but a new test from military history YouTuber Dan Brahim suggests the real story may have less to do with frozen coats and more to do with accuracy, range, and old ammunition.
In a recent Battlefield Curator video, Brahim, a U.S. Army veteran, set out to test several “side myths” that grew out of the larger claim that .30 Carbine rounds could not punch through the heavy clothing worn by enemy troops in freezing conditions.
Brahim said other YouTubers, including Paul Harrell and Garand Thumb, had already tested and debunked the general clothing myth, and he had done his own earlier test as well.
His new question was more specific: what if the clothes were frozen solid, the ammunition was frozen, or old World War II surplus ammunition had degraded so badly that it lost power?
The Myth Gets A Harder Test
Brahim said the myth is often tied to the Korean War and the Battle of the Bulge, both known for brutal winter conditions.
Some viewers had argued that previous tests were not enough because they did not account for frozen uniforms, frozen ammunition, or degraded surplus rounds.
To test those claims, Brahim met firearms YouTuber Will Borders at the range and used an authentic World War II-era M1 Carbine along with World War II Remington ball ammunition.

He also used modern ammunition for comparison, including PPU and Steinel .30 Carbine rounds.
That matters because the myth is not only about bullet energy. It is also about whether the test conditions match the story people tell. If the claim is that cold, frozen uniforms and old ammunition caused the problem, then those variables need to be tested as directly as possible.
Brahim’s test was not a laboratory study, and he admitted as much, but it was practical and close enough to answer the basic question: would a .30 Carbine round still go through frozen material that was meant to represent heavy winter clothing?
Old Ammo Still Had Power
Before shooting into frozen clothes, Brahim and Borders tested ammunition velocity using a chronograph.
First, they fired modern PPU soft-point ammunition, then Aguila, then postwar Lake City surplus, and finally World War II Remington UMC surplus ammunition.
The World War II surplus ammunition produced velocities in the 1,900 feet-per-second range, with readings including 1,933, 1,953, 1,996, 1,992, and 1,926 feet per second.

Brahim said the variation did not suggest the ammunition had badly degraded.
“Is it really enough to say that this ammo is degraded? I don’t think so,” he said.
Then came the cold test. Brahim said he had kept an M1 Carbine and ammunition in a freezer for about four days at around zero degrees. He noted that Korean War conditions could be much colder, sometimes down around minus 30 to minus 58 degrees, but said the freezer test was good enough for what they were trying to learn.
The frozen ammunition still performed. According to Brahim and Borders’ readings, the frozen rounds stayed in a useful velocity range, including figures from about 1,856 to 1,920 feet per second.
Borders said that, for blasting or military purposes, the round was still going downrange and still worked.
Brahim concluded that the cold-ammunition theory was not convincing.
Ice And Frozen Clothing Did Not Stop It
Brahim then moved to the question viewers had raised most often: frozen clothing.
First, he shot a frozen two-liter bottle of water with World War II surplus ammunition. The round went through and tore out the side of the ice-filled bottle.
Brahim said the bullet appeared to have gone through roughly three to four inches of ice.
“So, frozen solid did not stop this bullet here,” he said.
He then tested frozen clothing. Brahim said he placed layers of material into ice, including canvas, Chinese silk, wool, and material from a cotton jacket similar in concept to the padded winter garments worn by Chinese and North Korean troops.

Brahim had earlier shown a Soviet telogreika-style padded coat, explaining that Chinese and North Korean winter clothing was similar in broad idea: cotton layers, padded material, and a bulky appearance that made soldiers look larger than they were.
But bulky, he said, does not mean bulletproof.
Using World War II surplus ammunition, Brahim fired into the frozen clothing block and hit it multiple times. The rounds passed through.
“Frozen clothes do not stop .30 Carbine bullets,” he said.
After the test, Brahim showed the layers again: wool, cotton jacket material, padded Chinese silk, more cotton, and a thick canvas tarp. The bullets had passed through the frozen stack.
That result is the heart of the video. If frozen fabric and ice cannot stop the round in a controlled test, then the old claim that winter coats simply blocked .30 Carbine bullets becomes much harder to defend.
The Real Problem May Have Been Accuracy
The most interesting part of the test came after Brahim found that the surplus ammunition still had power but did not shoot very accurately.
Earlier in the video, he compared modern Steinel ammunition against World War II surplus at 50 yards. The modern ammunition grouped much better, while the surplus rounds spread out and landed inconsistently.
Brahim said the surplus ammo was “all over the place” and high, with one round landing low. He noted that being off by around three inches at 50 yards could become six inches at 100 yards and much more at longer distances.
To figure out why, Brahim and Borders measured bullet diameters.
Modern PPU and Steinel bullets measured closer to the expected .307 to .308 range, while some of the World War II surplus bullets measured smaller, around .300 to .304.
Brahim said undersized bullets may not properly grip the lands and grooves inside the barrel, which can hurt accuracy.
Borders suggested there may have been reasons for the smaller size, possibly involving pressure, heat, reliability, or military manufacturing choices, though he did not claim to know for sure.
Brahim said it could also have been a bad batch of ammunition.
This part of the video is more useful than a simple myth-busting stunt. It offers a realistic explanation for how the myth might have started. A soldier under stress, firing at distance in terrible cold with ammunition that was not grouping well, could believe he hit an enemy when he actually missed.
Cold Weather Still Created Real Problems
Brahim did not dismiss how awful the battlefield conditions were.
He said temperatures in Korea and during the Battle of the Bulge could fall around minus 40 degrees, and soldiers had to fight just to stay alive and keep equipment working.
Vehicles had to keep running so they would not freeze. Soldiers layered clothing, huddled together, kept rifles close to their bodies, and sometimes dealt with weapons freezing or malfunctioning after the first shot.

Those details matter because they show why myths can survive. In a frozen foxhole, with numb hands, stiff clothing, poor visibility, stressed troops, old ammunition, and weapons fighting the cold, the difference between a miss and a failed bullet could easily blur.
Brahim also addressed another viewer claim: that Chinese or North Korean troops may have worn hidden steel plates. He dismissed the idea as unlikely, saying steel in minus-30-degree conditions would conduct cold into the body and increase the risk of frostbite or hypothermia.
That argument is practical. Armor that keeps you alive against bullets but freezes you to death in the field is not much of a solution, especially for troops already fighting through extreme cold and limited supplies.
A Myth With A More Likely Explanation
By the end of the test, Brahim said several side myths had been debunked.
The M1 Carbine round went through ice. It went through frozen clothing. Freezing the ammunition did not make it ineffective. The old surplus ammunition had not lost so much power that it could explain the legend.
The one real issue he found was accuracy with the World War II surplus rounds.
Brahim said the bullets measured smaller than expected, and that could explain why the ammunition produced wider groups. At 100 yards or 300 yards, he said, that spread could become large enough for a soldier to miss while believing he had made a good shot.
That may not be as dramatic as saying enemy winter coats stopped bullets, but it is more believable.
The M1 Carbine was lighter and handier than a full-size rifle, and it filled a real role for American troops. It was not magic, and it was not meant to perform like a full-power battle rifle at long range. But the test suggests that its .30 Carbine round was not being stopped by frozen coats.
The better lesson is that battlefield memories can turn complicated conditions into simple stories. A missed shot in brutal cold, with poor ammunition consistency and a stressed shooter, can become a legend about bullets bouncing off winter clothing.
Brahim’s test does not answer every historical question about every firefight in Korea or Europe, but it does make one thing clear: when frozen clothes and real surplus ammunition were put to the test, the M1 Carbine still punched through.
